Hi, I'm working to be a trained spotter for NWS. Let's talk about that confirmed tornado last night

Preface: I'm not an expert, just someone with the tools and know-how to track storms. I utilize the following websites and apps:

IEMBot to pull warning data and storm reports, hosted by the Iowa Environemtal Mesonet (IEW)

Weather.us for pulling past radar data, as well as the RadarScope app for current conditions

Our local NWS office's website (KLWX Baltimore/Washington, with suboffice in Sterling), as well as the Storm Prediction Center website

Social media for confirmed storm reports

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last night, around 6:19pm, KLWX issued Tornado Warning (TOR) #17 for a part of Frederick County. This storm cell was being tracked for a while as it formed in WV and moved into VA. As it was over Lehew, WV, this warning was issued for radar-indicated rotation.

Now, what does "radar-indicated rotation" mean? Beyond your standard doppler radar, there are other radar products that can be utilized. Anyone who's watched The Weather Channel in recent years may have seen two of these products: velocity, and correlation coefficient.

In basic terms, velocity shows winds in the storm cells. Green color indicates winds that are moving towards the radar, and red indicates winds moving away from the radar. Your local NWS office looks at something like this (and many other things!) for any signs of hidden rotation. When this warning was issued, the velocity radar may have looked like this:

See how the red and green are touching, and there's a "pinhole" or "donut hole" in the middle? That was likely a contributing factor to the tornado warning being issued.

It wasn't long after, around 6:24pm, that it was upgraded from "radar-indicated" to "confirmed." Who confirmed it? Best I can tell with the current information, it was a 911 caller. At this point, it was likely near Star Tannery, around 11mi north of Stratsburg, taking its time moving at only 20mph.

Three minutes later, at 6:29pm, the warning was upgraded to a PDS TOR, or a "particularly dangerous situation" tornado warning. Consider this the midpoint between "tornado warning" and "tornado emergency." PDS is reserved for "large, extremely dangerous" tornadoes.

However, four minutes later, at 6:33pm, it was back to "radar-indicated rotation" and stayed that way until the warning expired at 6:40pm.

So... what happened? Was there a tornado on the ground? It's entirely possible. As I sit here and type this out, we've had two storm reports come in within the "polygon" area of the warning, for multiple trees down and snapped limbs. There will likely be more reports today, as part of the area is forested, mountainous, or otherwise rural. These reports can come from any number of sources: local police, the public, trained spotters/CoCoRAS, or NWS employees.

At the very least, there was definitely some strong winds. We'll likely know more information over the next couple of days.

Historically, this is Frederick County's first "PDS TOR" warning. Since 2000, the county has had four confirmed tornadoes, most famously the Middletown tornado in 2008. They can and will occur here:

  TIME, DATE W LOCTM D I F/EF
  1765 SEP 17, 2004 061 14:39 0 0 2 39.17 -078.17 39.20 -078.15 69
  1766 SEP 17, 2004 072 15:37 0 2 1 39.03 -078.27 39.17 -078.23 69
   495 APR 20, 2008 20:02 0 0 0 39.04 -078.29 39.05 -078.28 69
  1035 JUN 4, 2008 13:18 0 0 0 39.30 -078.16 39.30 -078.15 691765

If any new, major info comes out about it, I'll be happy to comment under this post. Let me know if you have any questions! EDIT: buy a weather radio! They're, like, $30 and will save your life!

Have you ever heard of them? They're "free workshops where volunteer coaches help you repair your broken stuff". It can include linens, appliances, cars, etc.

We absolutely need one of these in Winchester.

Self Post Valley Dental Care on Rivendell Ct, Trying to Illegally Bill

Greetings Everyone,

Valley Dental Care has been trying to bill people for money they do not owe. My friend is on Medicare and the bills were completely covered by Medicare and she got a bill saying she owes them money. When she called up she demanded an itemized bill showing what was covered and what was still owed. They replied with that their servers were down and could not provide that information. She told them she is not paying and if they can't supply that information that they cannot bill her for it. Today they called back asking her to pay. She again asked for an itemized bill and got the same exact response. She also explained to the lady that a few months ago investigators reached out to her because they were investigating medicare fraud from this place. They quickly ended the call after she explained to them that what they are doing is illegal.

I am writing this as a public service announcement. If you are being harassed or asked to pay a bill from this Dentist, ask for an itemized bill. If they cannot provide that, then they cannot legally bill you.

Flock cams.

I feel like we keep seeing flock cams popping up all over the country. With Va doing traffic cams everywhere now I guess we are next. I'm pretty sure I saw a legit flock cam between Lowes and Target N. Winchester yesterday. What is the best app or service providing locations of these things?

What movie theatre do you all go to?

We moved here recently, and we were planning to go check out ā€œthe odysseyā€.

I didn’t want to travel an hour long towards Loudoun just for a movie. So any suggestions on what would be the preferred movie hall between AMC and Alamo?

And I also saw there is a drive in theatre in Stephens city, but I think the Odyssey is not the movie for a drive in theatre.

It's really sad that this company will do NOTHING to assist its customers. Got a cut off notice for tomorrow. Called today to ask for an extension just until Monday when I get paid. Immediate NO. Every other utility company will at leat work with you. I'm worried about this heat and my pets. I do understand it's my responsibility but I am doing my best as a single mom. Hopefully they are aware of the extreme heat law and abide by it. Stay cool friends!

Looking to meet new people

Figured I’d throw a post up here. My name’s Adam, I’m around 30, and I’m looking to meet some new people around Winchester.

I’m into working out, disc golf, hiking, being outside in general, board games, movies, sports… honestly I’m usually down to try just about anything. I’ve been wanting to get out more and meet people.

If anyone’s looking for someone to hit a trail, play a round of disc golf, check out a brewery, catch a game, or even get a board game group together, let me know. Always happy to make some new friends.

All Points Broadband (Fiber Internet) Project Labeled High Risk

Many Frederick County residents still do not have access to reliable high speed wired internet, and the public updates on the All Points Broadband project have been far too limited.

If this matters to you, please contact your Frederick County Board of Supervisors member and ask for regular, written, county specific broadband updates. I put the contact information near the bottom as well as a template message that you can copy and paste.

The most recent Frederick County public timeline update I am aware of came from the August 13, 2025 Board of Supervisors meeting. The County Administrator provided a regional broadband project update, and it was stated, "Their final completion date is still anticipated to be September of 26." https://fcva.granicus.com/player/clip/291?view_id=1&redirect=true (1 hour and 13 minute mark).
Since that update, I have not found a comparable public status update explaining whether that timeline remains on track.

The Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development FY2026 Q3 VATI Quarterly Performance Report lists the Northern Shenandoah Valley Regional Commission / All Points Broadband project as High Risk. According to that report, the project had 32,238 passings in the project area, but only 1,588 passings had been provided broadband access to date, or 5% completion. The report was submitted in April 2026. https://www.dhcd.virginia.gov/sites/default/files/DocX/vati/quarterly-reports/vati-quarterly-performance-report-q3-fy2026.pdf
That does not mean the project cannot recover or succeed. I support the project and want it to succeed. But we deserve current, written, Fredrick County specific updates.

Frederick County should publish monthly broadband updates on the County website, similar to the regular updates Loudoun County provides for its broadband expansion project. https://www.loudoun.gov/5658/Broadband-Expansion
Those updates should include whether the September 2026 completion date is still realistic, where work is currently active, current make ready and fiber construction status, how many Frederick County locations are serviceable or connected, upcoming milestones, known delays, and a basic GIS map showing active work areas, expected completion areas, serviceable areas, and connected areas.

Residents should not have to piece together project status from old county updates, meeting videos, state reports, grant documents, and news articles.

I'm happy to answer any questions that I can, I've been following this very closely. There is also the All Points Broadband subreddit - https://www.reddit.com/r/AllPointsBroadband/

Suggested message (feel free to copy & paste):

Hello,

I am a Frederick County resident asking for more frequent public updates on the All Points Broadband project.

Could the County please publish monthly written updates on the County website showing current construction activity, make ready status, fiber construction status, serviceable locations, connected locations, upcoming milestones, known delays, and whether the September 2026 completion timeline remains realistic?

A basic public GIS map showing active work areas, expected completion areas, serviceable areas, and connected areas would also be very helpful.

Thank you.

1970s Winchester Camp Ground

I went to a campground there as a child. Good memories but can't remember the name of the place. Key memory was looking up at the night sky and seeing the Milky Way for the 1st time. Back then, with less development and light pollution, it was quite the sight for a young kid from DC.
