What was Fleur Budgen's illness (pre-Alzheimer's)?

This is something about the show that interests me, and was never really explained. Grantly's first wife Fleur started showing signs of Alzheimer's in Series 6, but by how she was depicted in previous series I think it's implied, although never explicitly stated, that Fleur has some kind of long-term chronic illness.

Fleur's first appearance is in the first episode at Tom and Lorna's wedding, although she has no lines and it's not Lorraine Cheshire - she's played by an uncredited extra. But as far back as that, there are references to her struggling with her health, as her being overweight is mentioned a few times. Then in Series 3, she's clearly very unwell as she hasn't been downstairs in three weeks. She drags herself to the school play, but she almost collapses from how much energy it costs her. She seems okay in Series 4, but I think that's believable because very often these illnesses fluctuate, and there are times when sufferers are mostly okay.

I'm curious as to whether the writers have ever said what she was suffering from, and if the symptoms we see are consistent with any real-life conditions (and perhaps that might have something to do with her Alzheimer's as well, if sufferers of whatever she had before are at greater risk of that in later life). I also think it adds something to Grantly being the union rep. That's usually just depicted as him wanting to be lazy and get away with doing as little work as possible, but if you think about it - Fleur doesn't seem to have a job, so maybe she had to retire young due to ill health. If so, Grantly would have in-depth knowledge about the importance of having a union that will protect you if something happens to you.

What if there was a long-term character on the show who was a predatory teacher?

This is something that's occurred to me because of Fragrant-Truth-7123's post about Frankie/Jim in Series 9 and what he would have done to poor Lenny if they hadn't been found. They've had a few plot lines about teachers abusing children - that one, and Wilson Bingham with Janeece in Series 3. But they were quite short-term, with it turning out that there's a real supply teacher with that name who's had their identity stolen by the abuser.

But... what if they had a long-term staff member doing that? This happens sometimes. Shortly after I left secondary school, there was a rumour going around that one of my favourite teachers had got into trouble for inappropriate behaviour. When I first heard this I didn't believe a word of it, as I had really liked this teacher and had never seen anything like that, but then more pupils came forward and it became apparent that it must be true (one really shocking thing was that one of the pupils involved had been quite a good friend of mine, who'd never given any indication that this was happening). But this teacher had been there for years, was really popular and well-liked by both kids and staff, and I think everyone was just a bit dumbstruck when this all came out. Which of course, is very common - that's how these people get away with what they do in the first place.

What if they did this on Waterloo Road? A staff member who was there for an extended length of time, possibly multiple series, who is grooming children the whole time but it takes ages for anyone to notice? I can appreciate that it would logistically be quite a difficult storyline to produce - you'd have to contract the actor involved a long time ahead at the point that they joined to ensure they didn't leave midway through the storyline (and I don't know how far ahead the series are actually commissioned, so that would be an absolute pain to make happen). You'd also have to be really careful exactly how much of the abuse was spelled out to the viewers. Show too much and it would just be multiple series with the same abuse plot line, which would be too much to watch. Too little, and it would feel like discovering they were an abuser came out of nowhere, which would feel disrespectful to a long-term popular character. The way to do it would be to not exactly show the viewer what the teacher was doing, but just depict their relationships with kids in a way so that in the future when it all comes out, the viewer can go back and rewatch past episodes and think, 'Actually, I can see now that it was there all along, now I'm actually making an effort to look.' That would feel true to life. It's what actually happens with predatory teachers.

The closest they've come to doing this is Cesca, who was there for a whole series. But I don't think she quite fit the mould, because I don't think she was quite a predator in the same way. Cesca's problem was that she wasn't very good at maintaining appropriate boundaries with the kids, and tended to treat them as friends rather than as pupils (we see this prior to her getting involved with Jonah, particularly in the episode with Sam and the drugs). We then see one of the most important reasons a teacher should be alert to this, which is that she falls in love with a pupil - that happens because she's allowed the boundary to be broken down and they've become close emotionally. It's still completely messed up, of course. She ruins poor Jonah's life (I'm writing a fan fic about them in the present day, still married and living with their son - the basic plot is that their son is now around the age Jonah was at the time he and Cesca met, which forces him to confront some difficult home truths about his relationship with his wife and how boys of that age are far less emotionally mature than he remembers being). But it's still a single one-off event that she didn't predict, and she was prepared to give up her whole career to be with him, which makes it not quite the same as the behaviour of a serial child groomer.

Another example is Davina. Her behaviour towards Brett was definitely grooming, it's clear that she behaved in a way that made Brett uncomfortable. But I think that was an act of power play in a different way. Davina was very narcissistic and couldn't bear not being the centre of attention (we see in Series 4 how jealous she is that Tom hasn't told her about Rose and the AA meetings, even though Tom is keeping a confidence that Rose has entrusted to him). Davina was sore that Roger wasn't all that keen on her, so she took advantage of his teenage son to get revenge on him. Which is still hideously abusive and Brett will probably need therapy as an adult, but it's still not quite the same motive. (I think Davina was always like this actually, including with Karla - she did good work with Karla, but I think only so that everyone would tell her how wonderful she was at looking after the autistic kid. We see in Series 4, when she abruptly leaves without even attempting to seek out Karla and say goodbye to her, that she doesn't really care about Karla at all.)

Anyone else think it would be interesting if they quietly seeded a long-term and generally likeable teacher to be a child predator, in a way that you don't notice at the time but can see clearly when it eventually all comes out?

Evie prior/Alicia cross

So I've just watched the episode with evie prior/Alicia cross, and it says she murdered her cousin 8 years ago, but even if we go with her being a maximum age of 18, that means she was only 10, but if she was 17 that means she was 9, if she was 10 or younger she wouldn't have been in a young offenders unit as the criminal age of responsibility in the UK is 10, so if she was indeed under 10, I'm going for she was 16/17 in the show then she coumdt have been put in young offenders or even convicted if the crime

I think Series 10b introduced some really fantastic new teachers

I've just finished the original run - never quite managed to get to the end before!

I know 10b gets an awful lot of criticism, and most of it I agree with - it's certainly not the best era of the show. However, I will say one thing in its defence, which is that the new teachers it introduced were really pretty good characters, and I'd have liked to have seen more of all of them.

My favourite one was Lorna Hutchinson. I wasn't sure about her when she arrived (although I've seen Laura Aikman in quite a lot of things and she always does a sterling job, so I knew she'd be good even if the character had turned out not to be). She very quickly rose to become one of my favourite deputy heads there's been. I'm not sure if she quite makes outright favourite deputy head, there have been many good ones, but she managed the balance between strict and compassionate so well, and was so great at the pastoral care side - particularly very complex pupil situations like Kenzie and Abdul. And she had an interesting mystery about her and a great reluctance to talk about her past, which seemed like she might have a past that might bring the school into disrepute Rachel Mason-style - but I liked the revelation that she was fleeing domestic violence. From a soap perspective, that feels a bit more simple than you'd expect... but it felt very true to life and believable. She almost feels like a Rochdale era character.

Then there was Guy Braxton. I liked the sort of 'very scatty and inexperienced but turns out to be surprisingly sharp' arc that they did with him, and it was interesting to have a teacher whose sibling was a pupil - they hadn't done that before, although unfortunately Carrie was mostly quite a background character who they couldn't do very much with. I feel like we didn't really get enough time with Guy, but he seemed like a generally steady and reliable influence within the school. I also liked the quiet revelation towards the end that he's gay - they didn't need to do that as it didn't add anything necessary to the storyline, but it fleshed him out a little more, and it's important for representation that LGBTQ+ characters are just part of the crowd without needing to have a big storyline involved. Guy also holds the distinction of being the only dark-skinned gay character in the original run of the show - it's really important that LGBTQ+ identities aren't only shown to affect white people.

Marco D'Olivera I didn't initially warm to, but by the end I could see that he was a character who had a lot of potential for growth. He's probably not someone I would get on with in my personal life, but I feel like he probably had an interesting past that could be explored, and if they'd had time for him to bond with any pupils it could have been interesting. I also thought he and Lorna were an interesting choice for a romance, because he was unusually old for a junior teacher and she was unusually young for a deputy head. It's an interesting situation - two colleagues of a similar age getting together, but with the complication that one of them is substantially senior to the other one at work. (Also, fun fact - Stefano Braschi is no longer acting and is now a barrister.)

That leaves Olga Fitzgerald. Unfortunately I don't have all that much to say about Olga, her role in the show normally seemed to be more about her relationships with her ex-husband and her sons than her actual work as a teacher. However, I will say I think she was a good depiction of mental health - it was good to show that someone who'd had a huge mental breakdown and had to undergo psychiatric treatment is able to return to work as a teacher. That kind of thing isn't shown enough.

I think it's a real shame that all these characters were introduced so late in the show's run, as I think there was a lot more that could have been done with all of them (including Olga - I imagine in a hypothetical Series 11 her sons wouldn't have been there anymore, Leo to exclusion, Justin because he graduated, so she could have developed more as a character in her own right.) But it wasn't to be :(

Completely random facts you know about the show the more obscure the better

As an example Simon Lowsley was very nearly played by a different actor. The actor that played him couldn't attend the original set of auditions as he had norovirus (poor guy) fortunately for him when he recovered the producers still hadn't found the right person for the role and asked him to audition again and he got the role.

The actress that plays Sue Spark/Lowsley is blonde in real life it wasn't a choice by her to dye her hair red the producers insisted on it for some unknown reason perhaps they figured the show didn't have enough red heads or something

I believe Christmas has never been mentioned in the show nor has there been any evidence of Winter existing in the Waterloo Road universe like snow on the hills being shown

Which couples do you believe stayed together and which do you believe broke up post show?

Just for funzies.

My personal opinions:

Connor and Imogen - still married with kids

Brett and Mika - broke up while at uni, never going to last

Kevin and Dynasty - stayed together, got married, live a quiet life

Finn and Trudi - broke up after uni and different career goals

Marley and Flick - stayed together, unsure on marriage and kids though

Ronan - found a nice girl and never spoke to Vicki or Madi again

Preston and Kai - broke up and ended up getting back together

Cesca and Jonah - broke up, Jonah has sole custody of their child, Cesca is in prison with no contact on Jonah’s choice

Andrew and Kim - happily married

Rachel and Adam - travelled for a while, eventually got divorced and she went back to being a headteacher somewhere else

Maggie - never got over Grantly, never saw anyone else

Rhiannon and Darren - occasional hook ups, nothing serious

I can’t think of anyone else off the top of my head, interested to know if anyone agrees or disagrees and any other couples I might’ve missed.

Day Seven - Chlo Grainger - sleeping with her sisters boyfriend, her French tutor, just after getting married to Donte.

Day Six - Izzie Redpath - cheating with Tom on Lorna and kissed on their wedding night.

Day Five - Donte Charles - obviously the time he drove his father's limo without a licence and under the influence that resulting in his friend's death.

Day four - Lorna Dicky / Clarkson - taking Tom and Izzie out into the countryside and destroying their phones so she could overdose and let them find her body.

Day three - Andrew Treneman - Leaving Kim and returning without warning as a knife crime ambassador unannounced.

Day two - Tom Clarkson - marrying Lorna despite his feelings for Izzie and then cheating on Lorna with Izzie.
(Treatment of Josh was a close second)

Day one - Jack Rimmer - bribing the parents of the G&T kids to come to Waterloo Road using money from the budget.

Do you think we'll ever see Jack Rimmer's children onscreen?

Until I did a rewatch of the whole series I'd completely forgotten that Jack Rimmer has kids.

I'd just assumed he was childless like Michael Byrne given his kids were never shown on screen for a single second.

With him appearing in the reboot do you think we'll ever meet them?

We have voted to skip Fluer and will instead be voting, in several days, for the most talented student in the show so far (End of season 3) in her place. A little positivity to lighten the mood :)

Okay so I posted earlier because I got to toms death and OUCH. Grantly just a few episodes apart. I mean that wasn’t need. He’d just gotten back to work as well 💔

The moment where he thinks of Maggie saying she loves him, I started bawling my eyes out.

I mean I feel so sorry for Maggie so just tryna get through it. Harley and all that crying his coffin,
