My grandma had a dream where she was in a room and was calling out my name and I didn’t say anything and she couldn’t find me as if I was not there. She stated that I was not there. Any ideas what this means?

I am looking for genuine advice / help on an introduction into vodou or just some type of clarity on potential signs. Supportive and non-supportive opinions/ perspectives are welcomed.

I’m going to start this with that I am white.
I grew up in the Deep South and sorta grew up around POC related spiritual practices along with my own family having some spiritual roots including forms of rootwork and Catholicism (not POC related.)
I have heard mixed opinions about Vodou being open or not to non POC / Haitians / people with ancestral connection.

While I do have black people / Haitian genealogy in my family (uncles, aunts, grandparent), they’re not blood related and I have no literal blood connection to any of this. I have a great grandmother who was Italian American (white) that was a healer / rootworker for the Italian community my family came from. This isn’t connected to Southern rootwork as they settled up north, however there are some similarities in specific practices.

I have always had an esoteric spiritual practice and been involved in unrelated practices such as working with spirits & deities.
In my late teens / early 20’s I was introduced to and sorta adopted into deeper rootwork practices. These were all introduced & taught to me by a plethora of black people I am close to. I have always been taught to understand the difference of rootwork and hoodoo, and that although there are many many similarities, I myself don’t have the specific ancestors to call upon for hoodoo… obviously. When I do rootwork related practices I call on my own known ancestors. I’ve never been one to push into circles I shouldn’t be in I’ve just sorta always happened to be in these circles. Not sure how to explain that other than I grew up predominantly around non-white people outside of my immediate family.

I have always had a very strong ancestor veneration practice. Specifically I have spirits on my mom’s side (Italian side) who are extremely supportive of me. On that side I also have black ancestors occasionally showing up. I’m not saying they are blood related but they’ve shown up and I’ve talked to them. I am wondering if ancestors can be considered non blood relatives as well? That’s not the main topic of this however it is intriguing to me.
I also have ancestors from my dad’s side that are literally connected to slavery in the south (white people in South Carolina). According to the records, they were allegedly too poor to own slaves and could barely afford life for themselves. However that doesn’t negate the fact of the ideologies of the times. That side of the family including my grandmother who has since passed were openly racist. I venerate these ancestors separately, as they do still deserve to be worked with and cared for, however I don’t believe they deserve the same seat at the table as the more supportive side.

Now back onto the subject of Vodou.

So to start I’ve been digging into my ancestry. ALLEGEDLY there was a connection with Haitians settling / escaping to Italy. Where these Haitians allegedly settled is allegedly in the close proximity to the town that my Italian ancestors resided. Now if there’s a historian or someone who wants to either add on or correct me on this please tell me everything you know.

While not blood related my grandma has some Haitian roots. She married my grandpa and had a kid with him (my uncle.) That’s pretty much the story there.

I also know about the major connections between Catholicism & Vodou due to the French colonialism. I have always worked with saints.

One saint in particular is St Lazarus, as I’ve gone to him for help with sickness & health issues with my older family members. Also I worked with him a bit when one of my uncles was still alive and was living in a homeless shelter. I went to him for protection.

While I did work with the original Saint / white epithet of this spirit, eventually signs connecting closer to Papa Legba began to appear.
By now the signs are oddly clear. The other day after buying snacks from the store for my ancestors there was a homeless man outside the store with a dog and he looked oddly similar to my small statue of St. Lazarus.
Black chickens have literally crossed my path in places there were no visible close by farms. I’ve had blue butterflies follow me at times (I’ve been told this could potentially be Papa Loko.)

So a few years ago I got a reading by a Manbo and she told me there are Lwa walking with me and a few who wish to mount and / or marry me (correct me if my terminology is incorrect.)
I decided not to go forward with as I just felt like it wasn’t the right time and I needed some more clarity from elsewhere.

So long story long I just don’t really know how to proceed. Part of me is telling me it’s not my practice and I shouldn’t really push it simply because of my direct ancestry and skin. Also part of me is definitely interested and wanting to know if this is even a possibility. If it isn’t then I’m cool with that I’m not tryna jump into something that isn’t for me as for why this has been a multi year journey for me at this point.
I considered getting readings from other Manbos as maybe I could see if they say the same thing.

Anyways any help or opinions are welcomed & appreciated.

I am located in Columbus, Ohio and am looking for guidance in finding a reputable Vodun/Vodou community, temple, house, or elder in Ohio or the surrounding Midwest region.
My interest comes from both a desire to learn more about West African spiritual traditions and to better understand my own ancestral roots through my Liberian heritage. I am approaching this path with respect, humility, and a willingness to learn.
I am not looking for online readings, social media personalities, or shortcuts to initiation. I understand that these traditions are community-based and relationship-based, and I am interested in learning, observing, and building connections over time if it is the right fit for everyone involved.
If anyone is aware of respected communities or can offer guidance on how to begin this journey in a respectful way, I would sincerely appreciate your recommendations.

When I was a child I was thoroughly fascinated by my limited exposure to Vodun/Vodou/Voodoo/Hoodoo. There were three relevant books on the subject in the local library. I rented them over and over. I was drawn to Vodou because I thought it could help me make sense out of many strange things I saw. Later as an independent 14 year old I made my first trip to a botanica. But with all the new age stuff my spiritual path went in a different direction. Years later I learned my g-grandmother was a healer who travel to do healing for the poor and those no allowed in the hospitals. She was especially sought out for burns/wounds and 'talking the fire out of people'. As she was on her death bed strong men raised her bed into the air and placed large stones on the floor and placed the bed on the stones. For years I asked africans if they were familiar with such a ritual/process. Then I asked a coworker from a Haitian Vodou family and they explained it to me. For quite a while I thought my ggm was a practitioner. But she at least may have had someone do that one ritual or job for her.

I just shared the backstory of how Vodou may have slightly brushed against my life. I am interested in getting a reading and seeing what unfolds. There is a pressing issued I would like information on concerning decisions I have to make. Vodou is practically nonexistent here. One house is 4 hours away. I am 7 hours away from New Orleans.

How do I move forward? I prefer in person. I am AA male. Should I look for a particular lineage? Not sure what to do. I am really interested in Haitian Vodou. Can you help me.

I would like to know possible prices, types of readings, what to expect the reader to do, what should I expect to learn/gain in a reading? i was in the swamp/bayou kinda and since i cant  swim i was hovering over the water while she was giving me a tour in a way 

she was a really pretty black mermaid, she was darkskin and wore blue all over and she was hexing and blessing people in the bayou 

then she turned and looked at me and smiled really big and i woke up i was like 16/17 i was very religious at that time and now im not its been a couple of years and i still think about it

I just came back from a trip to New Orleans last week. The city is incredibly beautiful, and despite the intense heat, I loved the atmosphere. However, I can’t shake off something strange and deeply unsettling that happened to me there, and I’m looking for some insights or similar stories.

On my second night, I was walking around St. Louis Cathedral and the French Market. Out of nowhere, I was hit by an overwhelming wave of stress and panic. My chest felt tight, my head was spinning, and I felt this powerful, primal urge to just run away as fast as I could.

The next day started fine, but then the nights at my hotel turned bizarre. I woke up multiple times in absolute panic, with my upper body completely paralyzed and tense. To make things weirder, I repeatedly heard the distinct sound of water running in the bathroom, but every time I checked, everything turned off.

What's fascinating is that it seemed highly location-dependent. I took a tour of the Bayou, and everything felt completely peaceful. I also visited the Tremé neighborhood, and felt great. In fact, right after coming back from the Bayou excursion, I was in top shape. But as soon as I walked back toward the French Market to grab some food, the exact same heavy malaise and panic hit me again out of nowhere. I had to leave the area immediately. Later in the trip, I decided to do a Voodoo tour... and the exact same intense anxiety and panic attack came roaring back instantly

Once I got home, I noticed two terrifying physical details that I cannot explain: I have a strange scratch on my back that I don't remember getting AND I have a burn mark on my right ankle. It has now turned into a massive scab, and I have absolutely no memory of burning myself or getting hurt during the trip.

This heavy, dark feeling of anxiety and panic didn't leave me until I finally boarded my flight back home. Now that I'm back, the anxiety is completely gone and I feel like myself again, but I'm left with these unexplained marks on my body.

I've never felt anything like this before. It truly felt like I was being targeted or overwhelmed by negative energies specific to certain parts of the city.

• Has anyone else experienced this sudden, overwhelming dread near the Cathedral or during specific tours in NOLA?
• What do you think happened ?

I had joined a spiritual group where they had worked with a variety of spirits in the temple. They offered different types of occult related classes and hosted rituals (not just haitian voodou). The head priest said they were a hougan priest and practiced new orleans voodou. I had came for one of their rituals. I was quite drunk when this happened, and later found out I have a met tet. I was told she had "partially posessed" me. I was given items related to the met tet and was instructed to create a home altar for my met tet. He had told me that I was born with her, and voodou must have ran in my family. My family is heavily Catholic, and didnt know I have voudou. After I did some Googling, I was surprised to hear there was intersection in my cultural heritage and voodou due to colonialism.

I later left the group when I come to realize that the spiritual group was manipulative, and felt uncomfortable with the group dynamics. I am quite new to spirituality and spirit work. I have been feeling a lot of fear since leaving. I was taught leaving would have spiritual consequences and must follow specific protocols to work with the spirits. I havent contacted my met tet since I had left. Recently her ritual cup had fell over the items and a piece of the cup broke while I was contemplating if I should call her, whether or not if the connection was real. I had interpreted this as maybe she was real, and wanted a connection. I am not sure.

I'm looking for advice on what to do. Perhaps I should find a hougan or mambo to confirm. But I feel quite vulnerable, and wary. Does anyone have advice?
