News About the Board of Visitors proposal to remove living-learning programs

Hello Hokies!

As you might have heard, the Board of Visitors is meeting on April 14th - one week from today. One of the proposals on the agenda is the abolishment of living-learning programs (LLPs) starting in Fall 2027, with the exception of Corps of Cadets and Honors College (they are no longer being designated as living-learning programs). Their justification for this is to reallocate all available on-campus residential beds to first-year students and first-year transfer students.

This issue is relevant to both current students and students who will be applying to VT in the future. While I was personally never a member of a living-learning program, they have helped tens of thousands of students find safe and welcoming communities in a brand new and completely unfamiliar environment. As VT's student population has grown to nearly 40,000, it is impossible to ignore the housing crisis that VT is facing, both on-campus and off-campus; however, abolishing LLPs is not the right solution. In fact, Virginia Tech is already preparing for the construction of four new residential buildings on the on-campus golf course that will break ground as early as this summer.

Whether you were a member of a LLP or not - if you disagree with this action, the mod team would appreciate it if you took 5 minutes to sign this petition. To learn more about this proposal, click here.

For undergraduate students: Click here to access a petition created by the Undergraduate Student Senate - with enough signatures, this will force a vote by the USS on this topic.

Please spread the word about this proposal! It is a two-page section hidden in a 950-page BOV document.

Admissions Spring transfer

How likely am I to get in for exercise science as a freshman spring transfer from a community college if I have 14 transfer credits from the summer and I plan on following the some rest of the exercise science transfer pathway (all the strongly recommended would be completed) and another 14 in the fall? Total by the time I transfer: 28

Extra info: I’m in state, mom+ other members went to vt, I applied for early action (public health) as an incoming freshman this past year, but got waitlisted and they flagged my application because I made a team there but they couldn’t help me get off bc it didn’t count as an official sport, so I never did.

Do we think I need more credits when I apply? Any tips?

General Question Is VT worth the money if I’m from out of state?

VT is one of my dream schools, but I’ve done a bit of research to learn that they’re very stingy when it comes to giving out financial aid. If I did live in Virginia, I probably wouldn’t be asking this in the first place but no I love outside of Virginia. I’m from a low-income family so if I did supposedly go there I would probably get into a bunch of debt (not factoring in financial aid from other sources)

Is it worth trying to get accepted there despite the cost or should I opt for state school?

Admissions Architecture portfolio

hi I am about to be a senior in hs and will be applying to vtech as an architecture major. I am a little bit confused with the portfolio because their website says portfolios r not required but I saw other places say they don’t accept architecture portfolio so I was wondering which is true? if they don’t accept architecture portfolio could I send a portfolio under the arts department (i have seen other schools do so)? would this be harmful or helpful to my application?

Advice is VT really worth it?

I know someone already made a post similar to this, but I feel like my situation is a little different.

I'm from Maryland, and I got accepted into VT. It was my first choice and dream school, so I was really excited to go. Then the financial burden started to set in.

I couldn't get a dorm, so now I'd have to rent an apartment and find roommates my freshman year, which honestly sounds kind of crazy. On top of that, taking on around $50k in debt is also absurd, especially since I'm not really receiving financial help from my family. We're lower-middle class and are working to improve our situation as we speak.

I'm going to VT for Computer Engineering, but I know UMD also has an amazing CompE program. It would be a lot cheaper for me since I'd qualify for in-state tuition and I've also received scholarships here in Maryland.

I guess I'm just looking for honest opinions from people who've been in a similar situation. Is Virginia Tech actually worth the extra cost, or would you choose MC -> UMD if you were in my position? Do you think the experience, networking, and engineering program make up for the price difference?

I'm still going to talk everything over with my family before making any decisions, but I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences and opinions.

Thank you in advance, and God bless!

General Question Merit aid out of state

Can anyone here with similar stats share what they received in merit aid? I am an Illinois resident and plan on majoring in electrical engineering.

4.0 GPA
35 ACT
Published physics research
National level quiz bowl
State level Science Olympiad

There are other things but these are the most important

Edit: some context, uiuc in state tuition in 42k and they are notorious for giving no scholarships, so I was wondering if I could get cheaper at Virginia tech

Hi! I'm an undergrad transfer student (male) at Virginia Tech looking for a place for Fall 2026

My budget is up to $1200 /month. Ideally would like either zero or one other roommate, my own room and bathroom, and a furnished place very close to campus. I am very quiet and clean. Please let me know asap if there is anything available!

General Question I ran out of things to do in Blacksburg

I'm heading into my 5th year at VT (yeah yeah, school is hard) and I get out a lot. I've hit up every bar, most of the hikes within a 2-hour drive, some caves, a few abandoned places, camping, climbing, snow sports, and pond skating in the area, and I'm looking for more recommendations along those lines. I love exploring and getting outside, so if you have any ideas for cool abandoned spots — urban or nature — I'd love to hear them. Or even some cool events that go on in the Fall.

Some things I'm planning on doing this fall are going to New River Bridge Day and trying whitewater rafting for the first time.

General Question work study jobs

Hello, I am confused about work study jobs. I’ve been on Handshake since late June and I really only qualify for like.. 15 jobs. And it’s only showing 30 existing? A lot that fall under the work study filter are internships or graduate student jobs. There’s no way that’s enough for the entire student body. I know they aren’t guaranteed but i’m applying to every single one I qualify for and i’m really nervous nothing is going to work out. Am I going about this wrong?? Thank you for any help 🙏

Academics MGT 3404 Details?

HI everyone! Has anyone here taken this class before? I'm trying to decide between two professors: Kimberly Clark and Margaret Deck. If you've had either of them, could you share your experience? I'm mostly curious about what the overall class structure was like.
