Getting back into production, need some updates

I've been out of production for a few years, and haven't been seriously dedicated for many years. I feel like when I see videos of producers it all seems so easy nowadays, with so much stuff being in the box. When I was in my teens we'd still use a lot of hardware.

I've been using almost entirely free plugins and DAW. I think there is enough free stuff out there to really make some nice music. I have some questions about modern production and also looking for some recommendations (free ones primarily)

1. Drums
I use Sitala as a drum sampler, I don't know how I came across it, but I feel like there might be something better out there? I remember using a software once where all the drum sounds in your library was on a huge web with similar sound kicks all next to each other. It was great to find the sounds you're looking for, but I can't remember the name (I also think it wasn't free)

2. Instruments
I'm really struggling to find a decent piano VST, the ones I have are all quite, soft. So if you know a good one, send it my way.

Also horns, I love to use horns. I remember EastWest orchestra back in the day but looks like they are discontinued

Also, please suggest some free synths that are popular nowadays

3. Effects

I know about TAL, and the have some great stuff, but sometimes I'm looking for something different. I don't think I currently have anything else other than TAL right now. I remember downloading a bunch from "freevsts.com" or something, but they were all lame

4. Paid

I've been using VSCO2 for some real instrument sounds, specifically brass. I find they sound a little...cheap ( I know it's free ). I've been thinking about picking up Kontakt since I know there is a lot options for that but not sure it's worth the money.

5. Question

If there was one thing that you think should be paid, and not skimped on, what would it be?

I've just released my first VST/AU instrument. It's a physical model of a string, built using the finite-difference time-domain method.

You can change the pluck position and shape, change the pickup position, change damping, purposefully reduce the model accuracy for metallic sounds, and modulate the pickup position up to audio rate for AM-like side bands.

I'm looking for an alternative to the Iota Mini - Bell - Twinkle VSTi. Something that sounds super similar (a free VSTi), or I can easily get to sound similar.

Wrote a song with the Iota Mini - Bell - Twinkle VSTi. It sounds perfect, but it has this little glitchy/distortion artefact that's driving me mad. Tried EQing it out, which makes it too muddy, and hiding within other layers of sound, which works a bit but doesn't eliminate it entirely.

I've been going through all my other VSTs and just can't find something that hits that spot, and it's driving me a bit mad lol. So, I though I'd reach out here and ask if someone has recommendations.

Hi folks, this is a super simple, small and handy plugin for exactly one sound, created by the Japanese electronic music pioneer Isao Tomita.

Technically, any synth could reproduce it, but for many people the biggest challenge is finding the right bell harmonics. I've fixed them in this synth according to Tomita's recipe, while you can shape the bell's character by adjusting the levels of the five VCOs. There's also an ADSR envelope, and that's it. The faders can be operated with the mouse or mouse wheel.

The download contains separate 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Let me know if it works on your machine or if you encounter any bugs. When you load the plugin in your DAW, all faders are already set to the correct positions for Tomita's signature bell sound.

By the way, there's a kind of hidden Easter egg. It shouldn't be too hard to find if you're one of those people who clicks on everything in a GUI just to see whether it crashes...

If you have tried Marco, the name tells you the relationship. Marco places sources across the stereo field. Polo places them front to back, in one shared space.

Most people either put one shared reverb on a return and send everything to it, which means every sound lands in roughly the same place, or they build separate short, medium, and long sends with offset delays and all the rest.

That works, but it is so much work, my man.

Or you have no idea what I am talking about and you just reverb. Also fair.

Polo is a track-sibling-aware reverb system made from two plugins:

• Polo Send goes on each source track. It has a small front-to-back placer, its own Duck knob, and its own Send level.
• Polo Sum sits by itself on a return track. This is where you build the shared reverb.

The placer is not trying to recreate an entire acoustic soundstage. It uses pre-delay, damping, and diffusion cues to give each source just enough near-or-far information.

The result is one useful blanket reverb return that can make an in-the-box mix feel like it is working together, without having to construct a pile of separate spaces.

I spent a lot of time on the reverbs themselves, and I think they sound pretty darn good.

I had Addictive Keys when I was on a Mac back in 2012. I got it working on my Linux box that I'm using nowadays, but as I've gotten more mature in my listening, I'm not as happy with its sounds. It doesn't have the depth I want. What VSTis have you found with good, realistic acoustic (grand) pianos, that definitely work on most modern Linux machines?

Linux Mint, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD, Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core CPU, and mostly using Reaper if said info is needed

I tried to exhaust everything I could find. What are your opinions on these or other instruments?

To me when Leo Brennauer compared all the overall Orchestral VSTs, Abbey Road sounded better than all the other ones. But then he went onto mention its really laggy and hard to use.

Other than the acoustic guitar in the start, which def sounds like a live recording, everything else sounds pretty much digitally programmed.

This was released in the early-2000s, I think it was made in Cubase but idrk.

If anyone can help, it'll be appreciated.

I'm trying to make a synth patch that sounds like a Lute. I use DRC by imaginando as a starter and found some success altering their preexisting "harpa" patch. It's a 2 oscillator digital synth, I'm pretty beginner at this whole thing but I feel like this is an idea just barely out of my reach, and I want to make it happen.

My main struggles are the attack and resonance, the plucked string should be a fast attack I think but it just feels so flat when I play it.. and the characteristic twang of a shallow string instrument isn't there, I thought maybe something to do with my values of reverb and delay, i have no idea really what to do for that. I tried to add a link fr the UESP wiki with a sample of my goal sound.

Any advice would be appreciated, I know this isn't the typical format for this sub so I got as close as I can. It's been about 6 months of playing around with the mobile version on my tablet with a little novation keyboard, but I just downloaded the PC version to try and patch into my Skyrim for that online RP server I saw on social media.

Hi, I'm curious about the capability of iReal Pro and Band in the Box, and am looking for stuff on YouTube or elsewhere that shows them at their highest level. So far I've only found YouTube videos where the backing tracks sound kind of generic and stiff. Do these programs have the ability to imitate styles or riff a little when it perceives space/silence? Any demos/videos that illustrate the above? Thanks!

I'm after v1.5.0 of TAL-Chorus-LX as it is the last version thst included the bitmap GUI (which I personally prefer over the redesign), and most importantly it removed the DC offset and included a VST3 installer.

On their website, there is only v1.3.1 available under the "old downloads" section.

I contacted TAL, and even they dont have v1.5.0 at their disposal. So, I resorted to the Wayback Machine, but unfortunately v1.4.2 was the last version that was captured....
Soulseek, Audiosex and KVR forums - I scoured the internet, but to no avail.

If someone has the installer to v1.5.0 x64 VST3, I would tremendously appreciate it.

Does anyone have the damage 2 vst, if so have you tried it to make it sound classical percussion.

Though it is meant for epic trailer music, is it just limited to that or it can be tweaked to sound like classical percussion like in cineperc or spitfire symphonic perc.
