New Rule: No Photos or Personal Details Without Consent

Hi everyone,

We recently added a new rule: No photos or personal details without consent.

Please do not post photos, videos, names, addresses, workplaces, license plates, or other identifying details of private individuals without their consent. If someone is already part of a public news story, their publicly reported name or image may be allowed, but private or sensitive identifying information still cannot be shared.

We know posts like this are usually well-intentioned and meant as warnings, PSAs, or attempts to help the community. The issue is that we generally cannot verify consent, intent, or accuracy. Even well-intentioned posts can lead, and have led, to harassment, doxxing, retaliation, mistaken identification, or other real-world harm, including to people completely unrelated to the post.

We are open to discussion and feedback, but we are putting this rule in place based on past and very recent incidents that could have been prevented had this rule been in place and enforced.

If you see a post breaking this rule, please report it.

Places in UWS that are remote work / WFH friendly?

Hi everyone, my job just transitioned to 3 days WFH, and I was wondering if anyone has found a cafe or space that is computer/work friendly in the area. I live in the 80’s but don’t mind a little walk, would love to hear where other remote workers get their work done!

Thanks

Lost wallet last night at AMC Lincoln square

Upvotes

Hey UWSers,

I lost my wallet last night 7/21 at the AMC Lincoln Square location at the 5:15pm showing of The Odyssey. The movie ended around 8:30pm.

The box office said nothing has turned up yet and they even let me go up to the theater to check the seat for it but nothing was there.

It is a black and gray checkered cardholder wallet with two Chase cards and a Schwab card and my driver’s license. All of my accounts have been locked so everything is protected.

I’m afraid it fell out of my pocket during the movie or even on my walk home but if anyone finds it, please send a PM and I can confirm the name and address on the license and cards. Can confirm the brand/model of the wallet as well.

FWIW, the wallet has high sentimental value to me. It was gifted to me by my late grandmother (she passed January this year) and my very first “adult” wallet. I have had it for many years.

Hoping it turns up. I have been anxious all day. :/

Seeking Handyman/Contractor, Plumber, and House Cleaner

Hi all! Pretty much as the title says. Moving back to the city after time away and am looking for individuals that service Central Harlem (below 125th). Open to recommendations. Further details:

- Handyman/Contractor: general help plus potential carpentry project for a custom closet

- Plumber: changing fixtures (license required)

- Cleaner: deep clean 1x month, maintenance clean 1x month. Looking for consistency. References will be requested.

where to find fried pork dumplings with thick skin?

Post image
13 Upvotes

My favorite kind of dumplings are fried pork dumplings with a thicker, chewier skin—are there any restaurants on the UWS, ideally around Morningside Heights, that serve them?

I’m referring to dumplings that have a doughier wrapper than most “potstickers” (so not what they have at Nan Xiang, for example). From my understanding, this type of dumpling is more typical of Northern Chinese cuisine. Sorry for the bad picture—I just pulled it from another post on Reddit—but hopefully it might help ring a bell!

Best black & white cookie in the UWS?

I don't live in the UWS but am here 5x a week for work -- someone was telling me the UWS has the absolute best black & white cookies in the city.

This conversation actually happened a few days after me discovering Hamantaschen (from Fairway) here and talking with a friend, who said Greenberg's holds the claim of the best B&W cookie in the city.

As a major lover of B&W cookies, who can't indulge as much as I'd like to out of respect for my calorie deficit for weight loss purposes, I'd love to be pointed in the right direction!

Store that will fill balloons I bring?

Hi! Has anybody ever gotten balloons filled (ideally in the 60s or 70s) that they did not buy at the store? I have a dozen balloons to blow up for this weekend

Lost moneyclip

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hello! This is a longshot but on Sunday afternoon while biking I believe my money clip with a couple hundred dollars cash may have fallen out of my pocket. The route I took was from the Duane reads on 79th and Amsterdam, north along Amsterdam to either 93rd or 94th street, parking on Columbus. If anyone happened to find it and picked it up I would really really appreciate you reaching out to me. I don’t need to cash back but I would love the money clip back. Please see the photo of it as well.

Thank you!!

What communities are you a part of?

I am on the UWS and have some friends but work from home and have begun to feel pretty isolated. Whether that's volunteer, social, athletic, etc. I am curious to know what communities others are a part of!

I love/hate the Beacon Theater

I was hoping to get tickets today in person at the Beacon Theater, but by 11:15, the gate was still down (ergo, the box office wasn't open) despite the fact that it's supposed to open by 10am. This is on top of the fact that the theater gives many of their seats to Ticketmaster (and other ticket services?), which means that even if you get there when the seats are first available to the public, your show might be sold out (or close to it). Using TM and other ticket services means you're paying at least 20% more than you need to. The box office also sells to people who are obviously scalpers, and that sucks, too.

I've seen some terrific shows there and love the venue (which is within walking distance from my apartment), but their ticketing and box office policies are some of the worst. I wanted to get NYC Comedy Festival tickets for my wife and myself to Marc Maron and Jordan Jensen, but I'll save the $400+ and just watch the shows from the comfort of our living room. And this is far from the first time that I've had similar problems with the theater and the box office.

Oh, and good luck trying to call the box office directly -- there's no such number.

Lost keys around 94th St in Central Park

Shot in the dark - It appears I lost my keys around 3:15 pm today on the big bike path around 94th St according to my Tile (which magically stopped updating the location as soon as I lost the keys lol). I did call the Central Park precinct who did not have any keys. The only identifier I have other than my black tile is a mini NYPL card. If any good Samaritan happened to pick them up, please let me know!

Throwbacks

I saw two guys in shell suits huddled over a crack pipe at 4pm near Broadway and 101st one afternoon last week. That is something I have not seen since the 90’s. Open use of illicit substances in broad daylight by guys who look wrecked. Can you smoke fentanyl? I saw a couple more shambolic people on Amsterdam afterwards. There is a shift occurring.

Hi, we found a diamond ring (maybe a young girls?) at the playground. It has an initial on it. If you can identify or send us a picture of it, we can return it to you.

Thx

If you have unopened travel-size toiletries, NY Common Pantry could use them

I just wanted to share this in case anyone has a stash of unopened travel-size toiletries sitting around from hotels or trips.

NY Common Pantry recently expanded its Project Dignity program, which provides showers and laundry services for unhoused New Yorkers. They're currently looking for hygiene donations, including travel-size items.

If you have unopened travel-size shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, lotion, or similar items that you know you won't use, consider donating them instead of letting them sit in a drawer. Even a few items can make a difference.

You can learn more about Project Dignity and their donation needs here:
https://nycommonpantry.org/project-dignity/

Hopefully this helps spread the word to anyone looking for a place to donate.

Daycare options in Nov for a 4 mo? Not on a waitlist currently …

Does anyone know if it’s possible to identify a daycare solution (as of early Nov) for a 4 month old on the UWS (we are near w 72nd)? We had thought we were going to be out of the city by that point, but various circumstances have collided to make that look less likely at present. So we aren’t on any waitlists at the moment, and I am beginning to sweat…

Any leads, suggestions, tips, thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Livelier / more social parts of UWS?

I’m hoping to make friends with people in their late 20’s - mid 30’s and looking for apartments in UWS - mainly considering the 70th - 96th area, more so along broadway to be close to the train stations.

Are there “hot spots” of social activity that would be good to live around? I’m a bit more familiar with the 75 - 85st area but am I missing fun spots above 86th?

How would you characterize different areas, if broken down into 70 - 80, 80 - 90, 90+?

Ideally looking for more of a single crowd (nothing against parents, I’m not in that phase of life).
