As a person with some experience (unfortunately) with said thing. It was a horrendous experience.

u/Waiting4Reccession 5h ago
This clip is exactly the reason why a lot of people will never join even if its a decent option for them.
During a war, when will it ever be useful to have practiced doing this dumb shit. It seems like half of the required training stuff is just weird old time humiliation rituals.
52
u/I_am_BEOWULF 4h ago
You don't train people to obey and shoot/kill another person on orders without training them to follow the small stuff.
This is the small stuff.

It seems like half of the required training stuff is just weird old time humiliation rituals.
Yes, precisely. That's 100% on-purpose. The rituals serve multiple purposes: as Beowolf mentioned, habituating people to following unpleasant or strange orders, creating a shared stress experience to promote unit cohesion, flat-out punishment for infractions, and so on.
Most of it is silly, some of it is borderline (or even over the line) abusive, some is funny. I will say, there are some times now as a civilian I think a boss just saying "give me 20" might be more effective than lectures and counselings.

This isn't a war exercise. They are likely being punished for something during training, and group punishment is pretty normal. Done correctly, the feet are supposed to rest on the shoulders of the person behind you, making the exercise more difficult.
No ones entire taint should be pressing up on your face during this

Our senior drill instructor made us do something much worse than this and we were all naked
Edit for those asking: in USMC bootcamp everything is structured. You have specific times where you're platoon is supposed to be and specific times you do things. At the end of the day it's time for showers and inspection. You have two long rows of bunks on each side of the squad bay. 2 recruits per bunk bed. At the foot of the bed in the middle aisle is where your foot lockers are. These are to be locked at all times. In the evening before showers you will line up next to your bunks and foot lockers in a nothing but a towel facing recruits on the opposite side of the aisle. The drill instructor will walk up and down the aisle as you hold out your hands t -Rex style for him to inspect your nails and after you turn around 360 so he can inspect your entire body... Presumably for injury or rashes. He's also double-checking that your foot locker is secure. I don't recall what the trigger was this night... But drill instructors have crazy senses of humor... And when they have a little time to burn they "play games" as they liked to put it. Anywho something triggered him... Like an unsecured footlocker or uncut nails and it was game time. He made us drop the towels that were around our waists. He had one side of the aisle about face( turn around 180 degrees) and bend over. Then he had the other side forward March with the intent to have us march dick to ass against the opposing recruits. We got about half way across the aisle before everyone stopped. Of course we weren't going to dick butt other recruits. Then we all got punished/quarter decked (a rapid series of rapidly changing physical work outs in an area devoid of bunks) while still naked. Hopefully I explained that well enough. For visual representation of what Marine corps boot camp looks like... Full metal jacket really is the gold standard

No. She did it wrong. Shins to shoulders, she used her thighs.

Yes, she did it wrong. Shins or ankles.
But it is kind of funny how she wants to keep the plank at all costs.

u/tenthtryatusername 7h ago
Yes, but functionally the closer you move the fulcrum (place legs are resting) to the point force is being applied (place hands touch the ground) the easier it is to push the weight up. The woman can’t do the exercise properly at this point in time. Probably tired from whatever else they were doing before video started? Either way, she’s backing it up on purpose, but that purpose is to make the push up part of this plank maneuver easier/ possible for her.

u/Resident_Wizard 8h ago
If these folks are in training camp, they’re getting run into the ground. I’m not going to go judging where exactly he puts his head, I’m not taking it as purposely perverted on his end. For sure the drill sergeants are.

I've seen this exercise done before, it was all dudes, not that gender even matters in this case. Can someone from the military explain it to me? What's the purpose? Was it invented by a dog? Just a bunch of guys sniffing each other's assholes.
151
u/ItsVishuss 4h ago
You’re not supposed to be that close.
The idea is that it’s a team building exercise as you’re relying on the person behind you to keep your feet in the air.
However, your ankles are supposed to be on shoulders. Not mid-shin like she did.

u/robblerox 3h ago
Most of the dudes are the same though, shins on shoulders and face in asscrack.

Gender probably does matter a bit for this, tbh.
27
u/PaniacThrilla 4h ago
Well, yeah I would much rather have my face stuffed in a woman's crotch than a man's crotch in this scenario. I just don't understand why this scenario exists in the first place.
23
u/Repulsive_Mixture917 3h ago edited 3h ago
There are a lot of humiliation rituals dressed up as tradition/exercise/team building in the military(nuanced answer is there is a bit of all of the above in just about everything). I was navy and although I’ve never seen this specifically, it doesn’t surprise me. That or they/their supervisors got board and decided to do some dumb shit.
Your comment was reading a touch bisexual tho. Not that there is anything wrong w/ that, lol.

I joined in 2008 in a co ed basic training and the way we did this exercise was suppose be a team building / trust exercise….basically once everyone feet are off the ground and on someone shoulder the group is suppose to do push ups at the same time and not fall, some drill sergeants will make you just hold it or try to have you walk as a group, we did push ups.
It rarely works especially with trainees lol but it actually looks pretty cool when you do manage to get 4 or 5 rows of this all doing push up in a uniform cadence.

That’s what makes it funny. It wasn’t supposed to be ass/pussy to nose. But she may lack the core strength to have just her feet on his shoulders so her thighs have to go on it. Now they may be wearing a weighted vest so that makes everything harder.

This is absolutely NOT boot camp. Boot camp is still segregated by gender in the Marines. The companies have integrated but platoons are still separate.
Boots and Utes, flak, and a dude in a black shirt? This is a MCMAP course.

Yeah probs muscle failure (why she went down), then slid the legs back a bit to cheat.
49
u/nachocoalmine 6h ago
This is more of a confidence/camaraderie thing than actual training. So you put you weakest person up front to let them cheat a bit. I met and served with a ton of great female soldiers, who could outrun you, outshoot you, and had better discipline. Not one could do more push-ups...
9
u/kingfofthepoors 5h ago
They could nowadays... My body is so fucked up from 20 years of service, I can barely move my left arm let alone do a pushup

u/lonchu 6h ago
she's bit short and tries to rest her knees on dudes shoulder.
18
u/FrostyD7 5h ago
She's gassed. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, her position migrated that direction to take more weight off her pushups.
7
u/MithrilHuman 5h ago
Others in the centipede are taller than her, the taller you are easier it is to arch your back with that chunky vest.

Team pushups , EVERYONE needs to take part or it just doesn’t work.
28
u/Barlow04 8h ago
Also a bit harder because elevated legs on an unstable surface. She's way too far back, though. Her ankles should be on his shoulders.
23
u/Ok_Calligrapher5278 7h ago
Her ankles should be on his shoulders.
Leverage, less weight on the hands and more on the legs/back guy shoulders.
But props to her for doing it, 4th guy has his knees on the ground.
18
u/LordsCaliber_45-70 7h ago
She doesn't have the strength to do it correctly, so she is compensating by moving her leverage point more towards the center of her body.

Nah. Buddy pushups are a form of hazing. They have absolutely no place in military training. They have a higher risk of injury than standard log-pushups, and can result in humiliating scenarios for troops.
Forcing troops to do buddy pushups has gotten plenty of NCOs NJPed in the past under Art. 93 / 134.
Recording it is the right thing to do, and this NCO needs to be reminded hard and fast by his command that this is unacceptable to do to troops under his command. It risks morale and unit discipline for no reason other than the amusement of an NCO that has no business using his subordinates for his own amusement.

We used to have to say “separate your feet” when drilling as to not say “spread your legs” and imply anything sexual.
Now Hegseth has them straight up going in for pheromone checks.
