So I have gone on a couple trips now and come to the conclusion that my Bear Vault was designed by someone with a grudge against backpackers. Heavy, impossible to pack, hard to open. But it seems like here in the Northeast many places require some kind of canister.

Any recommemdations about something, anything less evil? Thanks.

Just curious, do you attach guy lines and leave them attached or attach each time you setup?

Hi guys! I’m just getting into backpacking so I’m looking for some suggestions. My friend and I are planning a small one night forest trip in July and need help figuring out what packs we should get. Not looking to spend too much money ($95+) but I will if it means I get the best quality for the price ofc. Idk if it matters either but my cousin is very small statured. 5’1-5’2 and very skinny (she’s healthy just always been petite) so I’m not sure if that changes the kind of pack she would need? I’d definitely appreciate if any of you had any tips or advice you’d like to share alongside pack recommendations:) Thanks guys

I have (and still use) an original GoLite Breeze and I was thinking of making a modern version. Same design language. Same stripped down feature set, just with modern materials.
Thinking I can get it down from 14oz to under 10oz. Target of 8oz.
Has anyone made one?
I have an original GoLite Day as well, which is already right around 10oz, but years ago I sewed and extension onto the roll top to give some more volume, so I want to stick with the size of the Breeze.

ok, it's time for me to level up... thinking about buying a dehydrator and getting down to it instead of spending endless dollars on pre-dehydrated foods. is the hamilton beach good enough? what are yall using? many thanks in advance xxx

I’m buying my first backpacking bag. I’ve done a few overnighter trips and a couple double nighters but I’ve always used my dad’s pack or something of the sort. I work at a gear shop and I get good deals on osprey packs. Trying to decide between the atmos ag 50, exos pro 55 or the exos 58. Price isn’t an issue and I’m more concerned about weight and features. Originally was convinced on the atmos but with questions on the weight I started to lean towards the exos pro 55 but I’ve heard a lot of negative things about the features like the crappy hip belt pockets. Considering the exos 58 as well. That solves the hip belt pockets but adds almost a pound of pack weight. Atmos also adds comfort but adds 2 pounds. What are your thoughts on the three packs and their downsides/upsides. Is the extra weight worth it for the atmos or should I deal with the hip belts on the exos pro or compromise weight and features on the exos.

I’m planning to hike the lone star trail (96 miles) with my 11yr old son and 9yr old daughter this fall. We’ll take a few 1 & 2 night trips to test our gear and get in hiking shape. The kids swim and run so it shouldn’t be a big jump. We also camp and hike but haven’t put the 2 together yet. I’ve always kept a base weight <15lbs, but want a much lower weight for my kids. Here’s what I’m thinking, the total comes to ~$300 though I expect to spend a few hundred more on clothing and incidentals.

Tent: Lanshan pro 2, poles: Cascade Mtn Tech

Packs: NatureHike Rock for myself with Ozark Trail packs for my kids

Sleep system: we have 2 nice 20 degree bags (regular for myself and short for my son) and I plan to buy my daughter a Kelty Mistral bag. We have large foam pads already, and I expect 2 will cover the tent bottom and we’ll share, which is what we‘re used to when car camping.

For the big 4 I’m estimating our weights at 9.3lbs for myself, 5.5lbs for my son, and <3lbs for my daughter (smaller pack and no pad).

Other: I have a pocket rocket stove and sawyer squeeze, which I will carry. We’ll stash food half way, and water at a couple spots so we don’t have to carry as much. I’ll make sure our plan covers 8 days, which is 12 miles per day. It’s a flat easy trail so we may end up doing it faster depending on how they feel.

I guess my question is, does this sound like a reasonable plan for a low cost entry to lightweight backpacking? I do have a third younger kid so the gear will be passed down.

I am very new to backpacking, my gear is mostly influenced by the fact that I get discount on the brands, I was wondering if this would be an okay sleep and cooking setup, Outdoor Research Helium Ul Bivy, I wont have anyone else sleeping with me and I like the idea of not really having a tent, the Big Agnes Rapide SL 20x78 sleeping pad, I am pushing 6’3” so the 78 inches is necessary, I am thinking of the marmot wraptor 15° I’ll be going on trips all throughout Utah, Montana and wyoming, I think the idea of the foot vents and no zipper is cool and seems comfy

Quick maybe silly question, but is there a "wrong" place to put the sticker thermometer sold by garage grown gear (https://www.garagegrowngear.com/products/pot-thermometer-sticker?variant=46311233323195). I see most people placing it about 1/3 of the way up, and was wondering if there is a reason for that. It's going on a smaller pot for me, and at full blast the flames are visible on the side and was a bit worried about damaging it. Also, I put the pot directly on the coals or at the edge of a fire sometimes, so I was wondering if there is any reason to not go higher, i.e. right below the top rim. The water should provide a thermal sink and keep the higher pot walls from heating up to much, even when half full right? Or am I missing something?

Going on my first backpacking trip in July ! 22 miles round trip and decently tough terrain so trying to keep my pack as light as possible. Do you guys suggest bringing only utensils or would I benefit from having a bowl? Are most dehydrated meals able to be eaten out of the package? TIA!

I am either wanting the durston xmid pro 1 super light (dyneema) Or the hyper lite mid 1 tent.

I don’t need a TON of room but I don’t want to feel like I’m in a coffin. I think I have decision fatigue because it’ll be the most expensive piece of gear I’ve ever purchased.

I keep hearing the big problem w/ the durston is how much space it takes up & how that can be a really big issue on some trails to pitch it.

Has anyone used both of these tents or just have any first hand experience not only on the pct but elsewhere?

Am I just over thinking it WAY too much? 😅

I’m 5’4” and live in the PNW so that’s where it’ll be used mainly when I’m not on the PCT if that info matters. Thank you!
