What's the point of magic boots in Ultima 7 and Serpent Isle?
They have the same defensive value as every other kind of boots, 1.

I saw on the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom website under the "Ultima VII Magic Shops" webpage on the bottom of the page in small text: "Wis-Sur will sell his reagents for any price offered, as low as 1gp.". However I tried to buy a reagent from him for 1gp and he wouldn't sell.
I thought possibly after you destroy the tetrahedron generator in Deceit but when I tried after that his reagent prices were set and you couldn't bargain. So is there any truth to Wis-Sur selling his reagents for 1gp, because I never can buy them for that low.

I won my first Ultima game via eBay auction, and it’s Ultima 7 in 5.25-inch floppy disk form.
Yes, I own Ultima 4-7 pt. 2 on GOG, so if I was to build my retro PC, I’d be just fine with the downloaders via that site. But I’d still like to see if that media even works. Anyone with any experiences with 5.25-inch floppies care to regale me with your tales?

Hi all!
A couple of months ago I shared the first public demo of Blood & Chaos here on itch.io. Since then, quite a few things have happened, and the demo is now available on Steam! :-)
For those who haven't seen it yet, Blood & Chaos is the party-based roguelike RPG I've been working on for more than three years, heavily inspired by Ultima IV and old tabletop RPG adventures.
I've made quite a few changes and improvements since the first demo release, many of them based on feedback from players.
If you already tried it back then, thanks again! And if you haven't, I'd really love to hear what fellow Ultima fans think :-)
Steam:

Thanks!

Could someone help me out on Atlantic? I haven't played in about 15 years and decided to scratch that nostalgia itch. I saw on the forums that starting as a Tamer is a good idea, but since I've always liked Archers, I'm thinking of making a Taming Archer. Could anyone help me out with a Mystic Token, a library rune, or something similar? Also, do I just need to buy the latest version of the game to get access to everything? I'm returning with an old Atlantic account but starting from scratch. I'm open to advice on where to farm and how to get started here. For now, I'm playing for free, but if I get hooked again—which I think I will—I plan to get the full package. Lol.

Here's a little slice-of-life video demonstrating some of the new stuff I've put into Stravaeger (the Ultima-like Survival Crafting RPG I'm building) lately.
This place has become sort of a the de-facto home for this game, since it shares the Ultima vibe and has received so much love from y'all since I first posted it earlier this year.
This is all stuff you can do in the game as it exists today. Play it now in your browser at https://stravaeger.com or wishlist on Steam if you prefer to wait for it in its own window.
Let me know what you think!

I love old crpg games. Im 30, and my first console was a SNES. So Im not afraid of old games with bad graphics. In fact, I actually find myself replaying BG1 and 2 more than I have the 3rd one, despite admitting that it *is* the better game by any measurable metric.
That said, a lot of the older Ultima games just look...unplayable. I do have my limits, and they certainly surpass them. But the Ultima series is right there at the foundation of western RPGs, and I want to do my best to give them an earnest shot and hopefully find an old pieve of gold in that exploration.
So which games in the series do you guys think hold up still?
Sorry for another long one today! And you'll just have to trust me that the music is great. (recording issue)
Website is up and running, many updates to come here including playtest links to itch.io when I get setup there.
https://u1unity.archiveofmyth.com/
Thank you everyone for your continued interest, kind upvotes, and comments, they really keep me excited to finish this.
I'm calling it now... playtest version to be available on 8/1!
Today's update

Hello, I know there was demand for U1-U3, so here you go!
Each one is the real DOS game running in DOSBox, but it boots straight into the game with its own icon — no fiddling with an on-screen DOS keyboard. Instead you get a landscape touch UI:
Free — no $99 developer account needed. Two ways to install:
Got a Mac? One command:
git clone https://github.com/dmaynard51/ultima1-ios.git
cd ultima1-ios
dosbox/build-ios-dosbox.sh
It auto-detects your Team ID, builds, signs with your free Apple ID, and installs.
No Mac? Every repo ships a prebuilt .ipa in Releases — sideload with Sideloadly or AltStore (free Apple ID; Windows/Linux/Mac), then drop your game files in via the Files app. TrollStore works too.
Bring your own game files. No game data is bundled — this is open-source glue plus your own legally-owned copy (the GOG Ultima 1+2+3 bundle is the easy source). (iOS DOSBox, GPLv2, Android).

Hey, it's me again~ the weirdo who does challenge runs of Ultima Underworld 1. I was just playing a new challenge run about a minute ago and I saw something so strange and funny that I immediately saved the game so I could write about it online.
I had just gotten to level 8 of the Abyss where there is a grey venomous rat, a green venomous rot worm, and a flying imp ready to attack you right when you enter the level.
I quickly dispatched the rat and the rotworm, and I swung and hit the imp. I saw the eyes of the gargoyle flash red which meant that the imp was almost dead after that first hit.
Often times in this game when an enemy or an NPC takes a lot of damage in one hit the AI will cause it to flee from the player, which is what happened when I struck the imp. It began to flee from me and fly westward, over a small chasm towards a new area. Hold on to that for just one second while I mention another feature that the developers programmed into this game...
When certain items (I haven't tested them all) that have a low enough "durability" collide with walls after being thrown by the player, they can break and turn into a small pile of dark grey debris. Throw a rotworm corpse at a wall over and over again and I believe that it will turn to debris. Weapons and armor can do this as well I think. And most UU1 players know, or quickly realize, that they take collision damage when they fall from a high place or if they run into a wall too quickly.
So back to the fleeing imp on level 8....
I watched it as it quickly flew away from me, over the small chasm, and collided with the wall. It burst into a cloud of smoke, and blood stain fell to the floor.
THE IMP TOOK COLLISION DAMAGE BECAUSE IT FLEW AWAY SO QUICKLY THAT IT RAN INTO A WALL AND KILLED ITSELF.
This is something I bet very few players have ever experienced, but it's incredible to me that in 1992 the developers wrote code that was so sophisticated it could handle collision damage for enemies as well the player.
Another thing that isn't widely known (I don't think) is that you can take an orb rock from level 8 and instead of using it on the orb in Tyball's lair, you can use it on any of the other orbs in the game ~ like the one on level 2 in that square room to the north east with the 2 skeletons and the chest, or the orb in the hidden section of level 4 in the frog puzzle room where you have to make the hard jump through the illusory wall, or the orb on level 1 that shows you the green path out of the ethereal void.
If you use the orb rock on ANY of those orbs, I believe that the mana restriction on level 7 will be lifted. I assume that the devs probably never thought a player would do this, but I'm a weirdo and wanted to see what would happen if I destroyed all the orbs. And on this most recent run I confirmed that yes, destroying a different orb will lift the mana curse.
Anyway, I'm doing a new challenge run right now that's almost done and I'll be making a post about it when it is. Thanks for listening!

I adjusted the UI of the dosbox port to make it easier to use (I hope). Let me know if there is any issues or tips/feedback and think we can update quickly!
Note: there was a comment about license, I hope that is fixed I tried to make the install seamless as possible.

I was watching the Majuular video and he briefly showed the uncompressed audio for the taunts the Guardian does throughout the game. Namely, that insane laugh he has, which I'd like to hear in full, uncompressed glory.
Anybody know where I can find that audio? I had a look around Google, but had no luck, only stumbled on the wiki with the bitcrushed game audio.

Hello Ultimaniacs! I'm putting together an article about crossovers between Ultima and Wing Commander and while I have the Wing Commander side down I could use a little help accessing some of the ones in Ultima games that I'm not as familiar with.
First up is the runes that read "thou canst not defeat the Drakhri!" in the first Underworld. I believe they're located on Level 8. Does anyone have a save game nearby that they could share so I can grab some media right from the source? It would be greatly appreciated!

Hello all,
I am in my very first playthrough of Ultima Underworld and so far I love it.
Now, I am stuck on level 4 and am unable to get the Writ of Lorne. I know that Rawstag is supposed to give the key to the room in exchange for a red gem, but everytime I try to speak to him he closes the conversation by saying that he has no time for chit chatting.
I believe I must have gone too quickly through the discussion when I first encountered him, and now I will no more talk to me.
I know it is not critically important to finish the game, but is there a way to fix that?

I got the CD at the event, but neglected to rip the files before my copy warped :(
Does anyone have downloads anywhere?

Made a port for Ultima VI couple days ago, and saw some demand for IV so here it is for free. Let me know if you had any requests or suggestions and I can update or get it fixed!

I have U4 on GOG and it plays well on PC but I prefer to play it on handheld PCs such as my Rog Ally X for mobility during my commute to work and school. As of now, which ports of Ultima 4 is the best for this use case? Clearly I cannot use those which require keyboard control. I can only use the game controller buttons on Rog Ally X.
I also do not prefer PURE touch screen control and I do not like the "glass swipe" feel on my fingertips.
I came across a YT https://youtu.be/wEOnBP1e2dQ?si=oXsdrfXJyI4r4Gme should this be the one for me? Or other better choices?
I’m reading Shay Addams’ Official Book of Ultima and noticed an interesting bit of trivia on pp. 72-73.
"Another undocumented feature in Ultima V consisted of a mini-editor that could read or write to any memory location within the game, or call up any subroutine from outside the Ultima program. With knowledge of the memory addresses and the numbers and letters to punch in, you could instantly elevate all eight virtues to 99, for example. Garriott says that, with patience, you could literally rewrite the entire game with this feature. It was left in the program in case a player's game crashed or there were other drastic problems; instead of asking players to return the disks so someone at ORIGIN could fix the problem, the customer service department could just call them back and tell them to type XX XXX and 555-1212, for example. The five-letter password required to activate this feature remains top-secret, but it follows the pattern described above."
I’ve searched, and I find no mention of this particular cheat code on the web. Has anyone seen it before or figured it out?
FWIW: TIL 1-800-555-1212 is directory assistance for 1-800 businesses, so the cheat code is a five digit code in the format 12 345.

The Ultima series has lots of cool weapons and armour. So what are your favourites? For me, my favourite weapon is the Slayer mace from Ultima 8, it has a 10% chance of killing your opponent with each strike. Another good weapons is the Flame Sting sword which sets your enemy on fire, including animations for it.
As for armour, Ultima 8 had some cool Ghost armour, you had to go on a side quest and use Theurgy magic in order to get it.
How about you? Any weapons or armour from any Ultima game will do.
