My experience with the game after surviving for a year
In my third game I first traveled the world to find a culture with blacksmiths and agriculture like the Kiesse. Then, since I already started with a handaxe, I first ordered a splitting axe, then a pot in case I had to boil turnips you can buy from the Kiesse. If I didn't start with a handaxe I would have ordered a handaxe first. I crafted javelins and traded them for food from settlements, this is more efficient than fishing where you can barely sustain yourself with active fishing. I collected the nettles and hemp from the fields around the villages and then crafted a net for fishing. I also started crafting longbows for trading. I didn't have mittens so I bought fur to craft mittens. Then I ordered a woodsman's axe to start building my house and then a small knife to make better bows. I got a broad axe and I got the full set of axes. I finished my house and tried smoking fish, but turns out smoking is not worth it since it takes 16 days and it requires you to tediously keep the fire burning. I wish I collected more hemp and nettles and had more yarn so that I could make more long bows, I had no yarn so I had to make javelins for trading. I ended up traveling at night during winter and I froze to death, turns out you can freeze to death in winter even if you have fairly good protection against cold.
In the fourth game I rolled the Kiesse culture, and I was under the impression that northern tribes don't have blacksmiths, so I was happy that I rolled a culture that had blacksmiths. Turns out northern tribes do have blacksmiths, though they are still rather limited in what they can craft. I still wanted to find a master blacksmith so I traveled the world, in the last game I actually got lucky and found a master blacksmith quickly. I bought all the yarn I could find. Then I found the Njerpezit culture and learned that they are apparently always hostile. I died.
In the fifth game I rolled a char with poor skills but with a rough broadsword. I exchanged the broadsword for a fine carving axe and a couple of other things. I traveled around almost the entire Sartola culture until I finally found a master blacksmith. Eventually I found out that you will die if your fatigue gets too low when swimming.
In the sixth game I found a master blacksmith pretty quickly. I decided I will incorporate traps, I read the forum a bit and found the location between 2 lakes that should in theory increase the chance to trap an animal. The traps do work, though a bit slowly, I was getting some rabbit, arctic fox, and then bird kills. I collected 10k+ nettles, crafted 2 nets and bought 1 more. I checked the nets after day+2 time, the day+1 method listed on the wiki appears inferior. I got all the axes, I built my house, I bought woollen clothes and a bear fur to get maximum cold protection. I got a total of 5 nets to get the fish economy up and running. I got some other tools and full winter clothing, and I spent a lot of time crafting longbows in winter and checking nets. You can't really get out because day is short and you could start freezing in winter even if you have dark green protection against cold everywhere except yellow on hands and neck and light green on elbows. Apparently elk/reindeer fur has higher warmth value than bear fur, so I switched to that. By the end of winter I had spectacle helm, masterwork mail mittens, masterwork iron coudes, mail cowl, masterwork roundshield, masterwork broadsword, masterwork longbow, and various pieces of bear clothing thanks to fish + longbow economy. Then I started saving for a masterwork mail habergeon that I found. This is going to take some time. I also found foreign traders with masterwork mail leggings, but I couldn't find them once I bought enough furs to buy the leggings. Relying on roasted fish once you can no longer dry fish requires trading fish for something else such as furs or pots.

Is there any reliable way to find foreign traders without wandering around aimlessly and getting lucky? It seems that once you get full mail coverage + iron and a battlesword you have essentially achieved the best combat setup. Then ideally add wool (in theory wool>fur because 2x wool clothes weigh the same as 1x fur, and all defense values are better or equal except 1) and buy enough dogs. How many Njerpezit are there in a single camp?

URW source code ?
Hey everyone, I had a 2 very simple question when it comes to code of URW. Does anybody know where to find it and in what language is it written ?

Possible bug?
I may have found an inconsistency in the game. When you go prone, your movement speed drops to 1 km/h. When you sneak, it drops to 2 km/h. However, if you enable Sneak while already prone, your speed actually increases from 1 km/h to 2 km/h. Also, unrelated to the bug, does being prone while sneaking provide any additional stealth compared to just sneaking?

Hired companion; He barely did what I asked, then I had to attack him unconscious to get my axe back, what now??
So I hired a companion from the village I regularly use (and currently have 200 elk cuts drying at) to come help me fell trees. I gave him my broadaxe to use.
I regret it now because I had to stay in his vicinity or he would stop felling, so I couldn't leave my camp, AND he felled like, 3 or 4 trees in the entire time I had him.
Then, he said he would work for me for one more day and then I'll have to pay him or let him keep my items, I had him continue felling trees.
Now this morning, I wake up and he tells me he's done and he's leaving, and I have no option to pay him or anything, he's just keeping my broadaxe by default.
I can't afford to lose the broadaxe right now so I was forced to attack him, he is unconscious and I got my ax back, but now I'm wondering what the hell to do.
If I let him regain consciousness and leave, will I be able to return to the village and get my elk cuts and continue trade but just not hire companions there again? Or will I be attacked on site, so I might as well kill him and try to brute force my way in to get my elk cuts later? Very annoyed by this, I'm not just going to let him do nothing for the last day of work, so of course I told him to keep working, I expected there would be a prompt to pay him when all of the work was said and done and he was ready to leave. I need help this is the first character I've had that's doing really well, but we're still in early spring, and I've got a good location for home base and everything so I don't want to have to uproot and completely leave this region to be able to trade.
Runaway Slave - Day 1

Kills : 6 ( 4 died in rush ) Njerpez
Injury : 53%
Loot : Couple Scimitars, Roundshields, hunting bows, broad knives, knives, a shortsword, handaxes, Lamellar armor, some iron and mail armor pieces, and most importantly 3 cabins + 2 kotas.
Now as on day 1, I can't understand what to do next ? Any Suggestions ?

This game does Permadeath and savescumming right
I am new to this game, downloaded it for the first time just a couple of days ago and absolutely adore it.
The only other game I found like this, is cataclysm dark days ahead, which I also adore.
But, playing Unreal World has made me realize that cataclysm is not as conducive to successful integration of permadeath and handling savescumming well as UrW.
In cataclysm, save scumming is very common in the community, I have never played the game as a true permadeath game, because it's so easy to get killed for something that you had no realistic means of avoiding or controlling. Even once you've developed advanced knowledge of the games systems.
So you sink hours into a character, come up with a role play for them that you enjoy, and when you eventually get killed by something you had no realistic means of avoiding, in a way that you can't even really learn from, you realize the exact same thing will happen to your next character too, so it doesn't really make sense to commit to the permanent death. You'll be killed by something so fast, or something you don't even know what the hell it was, and you can't learn anything from that experience, and if you committed to the death you would be stuck in only experiencing the shallowest part of the games early game systems.
Unreal world, on the other hand, does a great job of handling both permadeth and save scumming.
I have lost two characters already, and created a backlog of other characters to play so that when one dies I'll move on to the next, because every death I have learned something to do differently with the next character.
You're not dying because of something that's impossible to avoid even with knowledge of, you often died because you lacked knowledge or got too brazen.
My first character died because I didn't understand fishing, all the things that could be used as bait, that fishing without bait is a straight-up waste of time, and my fishing skill was really low, so I got to the point of starving, went into a village and started eating their food, begin to attack me when I refuse to leave so I jumped into a swamp and drowned, having given up because I knew there was no way I was going to feed myself out of that situation.
My second character got a whole lot further, and I learned a lot with her, she had started with an Ango so I learned more about ways to fish etc, but I died of cold because A: I didn't realize that fall was coming to an end, because the month read as latter summer so I thought I was still in early fall, and I then proceeded to severely underestimate how cold it would get in winter, and after a week of doing nothing but huddling inside the local villages buildings for warmth and eating the all the dried elk cuts I was so proud of having gathered, I attempted to travel the overmap at night, seeking to trade for warmer clothes at a village nearby, but it was so dark that I could not find the village by memory, and froze to death one or two tiles away from it at most.
Both of these experiences will be carried over into my next character who can avoid making the same mistakes as the previous.
In addition, with my second character I had attempted to save scum during a hunt with a small elk spamming reloads of the game to corner the elk in just the right position, but realized that every time I booted the game up, the elk was in a slightly different position, so that tactic was not the hail-mary I thought it would be.
I think the fact that the game seems to auto save whenever you zoom in from overmap , and does so without warning, or ability to turn it off, is also good for forcing you to commit to your actions.
But yeah, dying from starvation and booting up a new character led me to learn how to avoid starvation and gather food wisely. Dying from the cold even though I had enough food for the season, helped me learn to prepare several things for winter early, learn when the snow actually arrives, and learn to travel wisely on the overmap at night. Etc etc.
I love both games but Unreal World is the only one that is a good permadeath survival sim, and that permadeath really adds a lot of weight to the experience.

What keys should be prioritized for convenient quick access on steam deck custom layout
I just discovered this game yesterday and it's totally my style, I can only play this game on my steam deck and Im not trying to use an external keyboard.
I played cataclysm dark Days ahead just fine on here and with the shift button and mode shift feature I know that I can map out damn near every key needed for the game, we'll just take some muscle memory to play.
So, as a new player, which keybinds should I prioritize to be the ones that are most simple to use, AND which actions can I pretty much place at the bottom of that list, or maybe not even need at all?
In cataclysm, my major key bind are the pickup feature, the examine feature, movement and zoom of course, map, inventory, wielding, wearing, eating.
Also any tips or tricks for a new player who is not just learning the game but also having to learn which things to bind and where, are appreciated

Does drying meat reset the spoilage timer?
I can't seem to find an answer to this in the forums -- I went on a hunt in the early winter, and after I'd taken down a boar there was a warm spell while I tanned it's skin. By the time I got back to my settlement the meat was "stale" but not spoiled -- if I dry the meat will it reset the spoilage timer, or still be most of the way to spoiled? I'm trying to figure out whether I should eat the smoked reindeer I made over summer or the dried pig first.

Value modifier of winter furs
Can anyone else confirm that winter furs are worth half again of their summer time value.
I tested this with a winter badger fur. The summer version I normally trade for 4 arrows and the winter one I traded for 6 arrows.
I've had a number of elk stumble in to my large dead fall traps, baited with turnips grown over summer, and would like an general idea of the wealth I've accidentally generated.

I am getting out of unfortunate hunting trip loop
I am new to the game. I have never managed to kill anything but a squirrel. Learning it step by step and my God this game is a vibe..
So irl I was outside standing and bathing in the sun this weekend and I think to myself "I have to get back to URW and lvl up my game". I started a new char, unfortunate hunting trip (it was a setup!! They knew we were coming!!)
75% fishing (pike enjoyer)
I built a raft and started looking for a good spot near a rapid which has access to some open ground. A couple near death experiences on the way, snow/rain, no pikes(a man gotta eat), my char acting like his dad didnt die two days ago on an unfortunate hunting trip.
I found a good location which has access to a pine mire.
I saw a grouse chilling in the mire. I sneak up and throw a javelin at it, I need to interrogate it to really know who is behind my father's death. I missed, sadly. It flies away to report to the All-Seeing-Eye. I put 12 lever traps all around the berry bushes in the mire. I hut F4 and vibe to the music, I feel my ancestors behind me. I smile to my reflection in the mire.
On my way back to the river I see a small boar that was stuck or possessed by evil(?) in the trees? Anyway it didnt move. It was waiting to ambush me?? Anyway I beat it to a pulp. I would have never thought my first kill will turn out like this. I feel like I am getting closer to the truth behind my father's death. The spirits are lurking in the shadows. I have 92 kgs of meat. I hear voices. No smoking, no village in sight but I am happy. What do I do with this much meat in my pockets? It is in my socks, under my fur hood. I throw this meat around like a kid.
I used to be re-living the unfortunate hunting trip time-loop over and over, catching pikes and running away from myself but this time I feel like I am getting closer to the truth. No more "what ifs". I am a killer now.
Any tips?

URW Forums Down?
Tried looking everywhere but I can't find anything about it. The forums seem to be down for maintenance each time I check it. I'm not sure if I just keep checking at a bad time or they are gone now. Does anyone have some info on it or when it'll be back up?

So what are your ultimate goals when playing, and are Njerpez the only hostiles?
So as the title says
I got a couple of hours on this game across the board, really enjoy its systems, but never got far
What are usually your long term goals for the game?
And are there any bandits in it? I was wondering, because I really love the combat, but theres not a lot of it.
Do the Njerpez travel and could attack my house, or could i ever stumble on bandits?
Can i somehow meet anybody out in the world (not inlcuding villages), and talk with them?
Basically what im asking is, are there any random events out in the world, and possible dangers other than animals? thanks!

How many days do tracks last?
I'm trying to finish the quest Animal in the Missing Cover, and it's been six days already. I don't mind to keep looking for it, but is there a chance that the tracks are gone already? Also, any luck trying to do this quest by the overmap?
