Academic/Career course schedule questions

hello y'all! i'm currently an incoming freshman in SEAS finalizing my schedule. My current schedule is 1410/1400 + 1200 + 1600 + a random language elective. This wouldn't be an issue, but I'm unsure whether I want to major in computer engineering or computer science. Computer Engineering requires physics (and chem) early on so that I can get to the higher level physics courses later during my time at Penn. However, with how difficult the 1200 + 1600 combination is I can't really take more than my current courseload without cooking my gpa. Any advice? Should I not take it with Rajiv and push it to spring?

Academic/Career Biol 1101

Hey incoming freshman here who unfortunately didn’t get biol 1101… I was wondering if there are usually openings for this class to swap/add or if generally there isn’t as much movement…

I’m really trying to get biology done in the fall, so if anyone has any advice on potentially taking biol 1121 if there is no more movement pls lemme know - I want to prioritize my gpa above all and I would take chem 1012 but I am taking math 1400 in the fall and I heard cirri was notoriously difficult 🙏🙏🙏 thx for the help in advance

I’m an incoming freshman and I signed up for this first year seminar but it says that only there’s only two people signed up including me😭😭😭should I drop it? I’m worried it’ll get canceled or that a class with TWO people won’t be good.

Housing Ware College House - Room Furnishing Question

Hi Reddit! I will be living in a double in Wilson this fall and am trying to plan for my dorm. I’m flying into Penn so I’m trying to be mindful of what I pack and ship. The residential services website isn’t very clear about which room furnishings the ware rooms have. Does Wilson have under-bed drawers units or a dresser? Any other details about Wilson rooms would be very appreciated!

Academic/Career Math 1400 or 1410

Hey everyone, I know this gets asked a lot, but wanted some fresh perspectives.

I'm an incoming Wharton freshman also planning a CS minor. Got a 5 on BC and feel solid on my calc, but I'm worried that if I don't pass the 1400 credit exam at NSO, I'll be scrambling to swap 1410 for 1400 and mess up the rest of my schedule.

Two questions:
1. Should I just play it safe and take 1400, or is this concern overblown?
2. If I register for 1400 as a safety and then pass the credit exam at NSO, can I swap up into 1410 during add/drop without much hassle?

Let me know what you think. Wharton only requires 1400, but I’d probably want to take 1410 at some point since it’s a prereq to linear algebra and other math I may need for certain CS classes (like ML) and skipping straight to it would be nice. Thanks :)

Future Quaker UPenn First-year Schedule help

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi! I am an incoming freshman at UPenn who plans to pursue a pre-med track. I am unsure if my schedule for the first semester is good enough and am worried since I have not heard the best things about the chem professors. I really don’t want to be overburdened with work during my first-year but also understand the rigor that is required for someone majoring in a STEM field. I don’t exactly know what career I want to have, but hopefully something within the medical field.

I am also apart of the College Foundations Program and was placed into the Key Cohort. It would be great to hear someone’s experience being apart of this Program and how the workload is.

Housing Looking for Male Flatmate (4210 Chestnut)

I'm looking for one male flatmate to sign a lease for 4210 Chestnut. 📝🏠

Free laundry and Wi-Fi, free shuttle service, free flat-screen TV, alarm system, video monitoring, keyless entry, and a parking garage are included. 🧺📺🚗

Pricing: 700/bed 💰🛏️

I'm okay with any eating habits (vegetarian/non-vegetarian). I would prefer a non-smoker and an MSE SEAS student. 🚭🎓

I'm an incoming MSE Robotics student (male). 🤖👨‍🎓

Academic/Career Clubs and organizations to join at Penn

Hello everyone, I’m an incoming Penn bioengineering PhD student. What are some clubs you recommend for someone hoping to transition into industry? Or just have more fun during their time as a grad student?

Any consulting clubs, hiking clubs, I’m open to trying anything. I just wanna come out of this a a a more wholistic person. Not just an expert in a niche area. I’m very nervous about getting too into research that I don’t develop other parts of my personality (or lose out on what I have)

Academic/Career Advice for Add/Drop/Swap period!

Post image
3 Upvotes

I need help, please! The add/drop/swap period opens soon and I would like some advice on what to prioritize and maybe what classes I should be looking into to have prepared. Literally any wisdom you guys could give me would be helpful. I know I'm asking pretty late so I'd appreciate anything.

I feel like I got extremely unlucky compared to a lot of the other schedules I'm seeing. I could be wrong but only getting that 1 credit for a program that I opted into...

Academic/Career Study Abroad as a Sophomore??

Im a sophomore in the college who’s looking into study abroad but im a little confused about this rule “Students who enter Penn as first-years must complete three semesters of full-time study in Philadelphia and be enrolled at Penn in the fourth full-time semester before applying to study abroad. Students must also be actively enrolled at Penn and the semester before they study abroad. Transfer students must complete one semester at Penn before applying. They must have completed two semesters at Penn before studying abroad and be enrolled at Penn the semester before their departure
Does this mean that we’re restricted from studying abroad for a semester all of sophomore year or only for the fall semester?

Future Quaker Course Registration Help!!!

I figured I'd post on here in case anyone with experience is able to help me... I'm an incoming freshman at Penn who wants to be on a pre-med track, but my advanced registration schedule came out, and I only got 1.5 out of the 4.5 credits I wanted. I hear the add/drop/swap period is so intense as is, so I want some advice on which courses I should prioritize in signing up for ASAP and which ones can wait for a minute or two. I would also like to know whether I should have even more backups than I already have just in case. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!!! 😰😰😰

Academic/Career Gen Chem Lab Waiver

Does anyone know how much lab work in HS Chem is "enough" to get the gen chem lab I waived? And how often do they waive lab for students? My advisor was mentioning it as if a lot of people do get it waived but I wasn't entirely sure..

My school's chem was pretty intensive on lab, I think we had lab work minimum every other week and we had experience writing long lab reports, group lab, traditional all hands on plus using lab programs on our laptops. From my memory, lab and lecture took up about the same portion throughout the years and we learned mostly from lab rather than having concepts explained in lecture. I'm personally very comfortable in lab and I think I'm familiar with most basic gen chem experiments people might do so really not sure if my experience was enough.

Also, is it possible to get lab waived but still take the lecture?

Academic/Career How hard is it to get an A in SPAN 0300?

So basically the last time I took Spanish was in sophomore year of hs (Spanish 3) and I'm now a sophomore in college.

I did the placement exam in 9 min and just vibe checked the MCQ answers and picked whatever I thought were the right answers. I ended up placing into 0300...

I'm VERY nervous about this, because i lowkey don't even know the answers I was selecting on that test. But I also don't want to start from beginner Spanish (because that adds extra classes).

How hard is intermediate spanish (0300 and 0400) and, more importantly, the exams? Should I start studying now in the summer to get an A?

Any perspective appreciated please, thanks!

Social Please help a girl out with packing!

I've been trying to make a list of clothes to bring to Penn, and the more I read online, the more I think I'm packing too professionally or too casually. I love fashion and my mom has lots of professional clothing I can bring with me (I am attending Wharton so I will probably need some, but I don't want to overpack). I would appreciate some advice on what people typically wear day-to-day for classes, what they wear for networking events, and on nights when they go out with friends. And also what to wear to the NSO gala! (ex. prom-like dress, summer dress...)

Thank you so much!

Future Quaker Work-study seeking?

I’m an incoming freshman this year and I have work study as a part of my financial aid. My advisor told me to apply to things on this “Workday” website and I’ve applied to a few positions, but all they ask for is a resumè? No additional questions or anything. It just feels sort of frivolous to me?

Does anyone else have experience with this? Is it better to just try e-mailing places and telling them I’m interested in a job for my work study grant?

Academic/Career UPenn Law admissions question for non-trad background?

UPenn Law is my target school. Got 176 on my LSAT, 3.8 GPA but coming from a non-traditional background. Wondering if anyone else in here used an admissions consultant for their law school applications? I really, really want to make sure I'm putting my best foot forward so I've decided to hire someone for help with my personal statement for my applications. Want to see if anyone who got admitted used a consultant/coach and who you used?

tl;dr Looking for recommendations for law school admissions consultants you used
