Errol Childress is one of the most fascinating villains in television, not because he is the most powerful or the most visible, but because he is such a disturbing contradiction.

We only spend a small amount of time with him, yet he leaves one of the biggest impressions of the entire series. What makes him so memorable is that he is not simply a monster. He is intelligent, curious, and surprisingly cultured. His home contains piles of books, he understands art and symbolism, he has knowledge of literature and popular culture, and he demonstrates a flair for the dramatic with an ability to mimic voices and accents. But that is exactly what makes him terrifying.

Errol is someone who can imitate humanity without truly participating in it, and there's something deeply unsettling about that. He understands the outward expressions of culture, emotion, and identity, but there is a profound emptiness underneath. He can reproduce the appearance of humanity, while lacking the empathy and morality that make us human. The contrast between his intellectual curioosity and his utterly depraved existence is what makes him such a compelling villain. He is not a mindless brute.

The genius of the character is his duality. He understands beauty, culture, and human behavior - but he has twisted those things into something monstrous. His intelligence does not make him better; it simply gives him more tools to construct and justify his own darkness. That contrast is what makes him so compelling. The viewer is drawn in by the complexity of the character even as they are repulsed by his actions. He represents a disturbing idea: that intelligence and knowledge do not automatically lead to wisdom, empathy, or morality.

His "ascension" philosophy and obsession with escaping the "disc and loop" reveal a person who has built an entire mythology around his own corruption. He has taken his trauma, his family history, and his crimes and transformed them into something he sees as meaningful. Glenn Fleshler's performance is incredible because he never plays Errol as just a creepy killer. He plays him as a deeply damaged, intelligent, theatrical, and horrifying human being.

I noticed while watching through Seasons 3 and 4 that one-eye symbolism is prominent. Junius Watts in S3 has a damaged left eye. The polar bear in S4 has a damaged left eye. Otis Heiss in S4 has a damaged left eye. The patch on the parka in S4 is a face with one eye. From what I understand a lot of people take the one-eye motif to be related to half-sight, as in blindness to spiritual reality.

I wonder though, if there is a genuine supernaturally malevolent force present in both stories, could the one-eye be its way of marking itself? Perhaps of even mocking the detectives ignorance of it despite it making itself clearly known? Rust says in S1 that “In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king.”

Given the King in Yellow’s prominence I have to wonder if the one-eyed characters are meant to be understood as either those touched by him, or perhaps even as manifestations of him. Perhaps they’re even vessels used for a time and then discarded at the cost of an eye. I don’t have any firm thoughts on the matter, but I do find the connection interesting and wanted others perspectives on it!

Wow. I just finished Season 1 for the very first time, and that’s the only thing I can say. I was seriously skeptical of people who claimed this was the best tv season of all time. I thought there was no way it would live up to my expectations, and I was right; it didn’t live up to my expectations - it exceeded them.

That was the greatest performance that I have ever seen in my entire life. Zero flaws. Zero mistakes. Some of the greatest acting ever. Stunning direction and cinematography. Perfect writing. Themes so complex I don’t think I’ll ever be able to completely wrap my head around them. I don’t even consider this to be a tv show - that was an experience.

Every tv show that I watch from now on will always be cursed to attempt to live up to the standards set by True Detective Season 1, even though I think that’s an impossible task. This is truly the greatest 8 hours of television ever.

This was last summer, when i had just learned the ropes on shitposting to this sub and had just gotten added back after my initials ban. People requested for me to added back so the mods obliged. Then out of the blue, this guy u/punkate messages me with a brilliant idea. Seeing how much i had been shitposting, he wanted to get me as a co-mod on circle jerk true detective subreddit of his own. Called r/TrueDetectiveSC respectively.

I was suprising open to the idea. (Keep in mind, this is still an inexpierienced me) and he gave me moderation access immediately. He had already made 3 start up shitposts on that sub and (i dont remember how) told me that he had talked with the mods of this subreddit on promoting it to get more members.

Everything seemed to be going smoothly but out the blue, he realized the existense of r/okbuddycarcosa and i told him that i got unbanned on this one. As quickly as it started, we gave up on the subreddit, realizing there was no point. He removed his posts and moderation rights to the sub BUT I still have my own access to it and im only member and mod.

Im not sure if anyone even has access to it anymore other than me. Just remembered this out of the blue.

Season 1 is in my top 2 tv shows ever and could very well be my favourite piece of media ever but that is very largely in part due to the philosophical aspects more than the aesthetic (although that’s pretty hard to beat as well). I have rewatched it like 5 or 6 times and only came across it less than a year ago. Are any of the other seasons philosophical at all or do they lean more into regular crime shows which to be honest I couldn’t have less interest in.

Im running a ttrpg campaign with villains very thematically similar to the tuttle family cult, like a fucked up cult made up of elites that perfirm sacrifices and even experiment on people. Need metal song recs for boss battles and whatnot. Ill also take goth music recs if not metal recs as well
