Beat the game for the first time! (Normal roguelike)

And it only took me 160 hours.

Here's my first winner: Mordekaiser, the Ogre Doombringer:

https://te4.org/characters/400294/tome/fbb506d7-b527-493c-9604-905a005e35ba

I know it's only Normal, but I'm really proud of it. This is probably my favorite game now, and after all this time I finally feel like I'm starting to master its mechanics. I'm really looking forward to starting my Nightmare runs.

The final fight was insane. I killed Elandar first and then went after Argoniel, but after taking off a good chunk of his health, I failed to remove a Burning Hex and ended up dying. Thankfully, I still had an Elixir of Life. The last few turns were just me versus Argoniel: no cooldowns, no sustains, just me basic attacking the son of a bitch in to oblivion until my Reckless Strike went back up and I finally finished him.

I mean... how can you not love this game?

PS: One tip for beginners: play slowly. Use Track/Premonition constantly, and always pay close attention to enemy stats, buffs and debuffs. If you're in a rush, it's probably better to play something else, because you may loose your character. Be a methodical motherfucker.

Any idea how a random rogue rare hit me with an over 1k retaliation damage?

Unlocking new ways to die over here. The number would probably be even crazier without trained reactions. It's my third genuine 100 to 0 in one action death in almost 700 hours of playing this game. Funnily enough second one was also on this run and also from retaliation damage by sun paladin, I guess as enticing as it is - flexible combat is not a good idea on marauder. Lessons learned.

Edit: I misread the log and it wasn't retaliation. But just to put it into perspective, that fear wasn't unfounded and this is the log from my previous death. It can get pretty nutty.

There was another line like that for my greater weapon focus proc for over 700 retal damage from one attack in tempest peak at level 26.

I'm running the game on GameNative on my Poco X8 Pro. The controls are horrible because I don't know how to configure them properly and it's a total mess, but I'm super happy because I really wanted to play this on my phone!!

Do I just restart? Do I lose data if I close the thingn back to my last save? Any advice would be appreciated.

What Class Best Captures Its Fantasy?

Loved the discussion in the last post about which class has the weakest early game, so let's keep it going.

Which class do you think does the best job of translating its fantasy and lore into its gameplay and talents? In other words, does an Archmage actually make you feel like you're playing a powerful master of magic?

For me, at least so far, it's Doombringer. You really feel like an unstoppable war machine fueled by demonic blood, just leaping into a mob in a fiery explosion and then wiping out whatever's left with one (or two, because I like playing Ogre) massive weapons.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that this is a really hard choice because it's one of ToME4 greatest strengths.

Tool: Wanderer Seed Finder

I've always been weirdly obsessed with the Wanderer class. It can technically be more broken than the Adventurer, since it gets more trees available. The problem is that they're usually garbage / not synergistic, and you have to wait to see what you unlock.

I created a tool to search for Wanderer seeds that match any criteria: https://github.com/tzcnt/tome4-wanderer-seed

Configure your unlocks.json to match what you've unlocked (including your enabled DLCs). Edit rules.json to specify the desired talent trees, and at what level you want them to unlock. Then run the search command and it brute forces the entire RNG search space and returns the first 100 seeds that match your criteria. This is done in parallel using all CPU cores, and optionally also your GPU. Now run the generate command with each seed to see the actual talents that you'll receive during your run.

Binaries are available for Windows on the releases page; otherwise it's a simple CMake build.

The final fight as an Archmage Spoiler

I just beat the game for the first time as an Archmage (Level 50 in Roguelike mode). The final battle was so easy that I'm ashamed. I suspect there may be a bug.

When the fight started, I used the Rune of Dissipation to get rid of Elandar's sustains. Then I used an item to create a circle of sanctity). I expected Elandar to leave the circle and cast spells, but he didn't. He attacked Aeryn as a melee fighter, and I hit him with every spell I had (I love Elemental Fury).

When the circle of sanctity ended, I expected Elandar to shoot spells at me. But he kept fighting Aeryn. I cast Time Prison on Argoniel, and while Elandar attacked Aeryn, I zapped him until he died. Then I closed two of the portals.

When Time Prison wore off, Argoniel attacked Aeryn, and I hit him with spells until he died. When the battle was over, I had 100% of my hit points and Aeryn was down to 50%. I don't think anyone even tried to hit me. You can see why I feel ashamed, right?

EDIT: I played at normal difficulty. I'm just surprised that Elandar didn't cast any spells after I created the circle of sanctity.

What games do you recommend like ToME?

I know this has been asked before, but i couldn't find a somewhat recent thread. I also want to specify i'm looking for something with as many different classes, where you kinda learn a rotation and there's still depth and different builds within in it, served in a difficult roguelike.
the usual recommendations are Caves of Qud, tangledeep, cataclysm, dwarf fortress etc, but they don't quite scratch the same itch as tome. Path of achra is a good game, but not really the same in my opinion.

You guys have any luck finding something like ToME out there?

Wally and Waddles has died. (Writhing one class tips)

*Lore\*

I posted here a little while ago about naming characters in tome4. I mentioned wally who is the successor of Wilbur.

After a long journey Wally has fully perished, and at the final boss too. I dont intend on rerunning writhing one for a bit because personally I think its boring, However I would like to give some tips

My run was on Nightmare difficulty and I run a mod that lets me buy points towards my character, prodigies, etc. This was also my second attempt

*Tips\*

Race: Use Drem. Writhing one gets screwed by waiting on cooldowns, so use drem

Dmg:

- Your worm will debuff a crap ton, and you can aswell.

- Attaching tentacle to nuke enemys deal A LOT of damage

- Dont be afraid to wait for debuffs to hit before nuking, your cooldowns are long so make sure stuff hits hard

Def: (What I screwed up on)

- Build your worm to tank and debuff. You have enough dmg on your own, and you get a lot of resistance simply from being nearby your worm. (On my run I built Waddles for dmg and he kept dying which lead to me getting hit hard)

- Pustulent fulmination seems pretty bad, but at higher levels its a great heal
- I struggled a lot on my run because of debuff removal. Maybe its my lack of experience, but try to focus on handling specific debuffs, like silence, disarm, freeze/stun, etc
- Horrific Display saved me multiple times when I got too greedy. Its surprisingly useful when escaping against specific enemies

Extra:

- I'm pretty sure overgrowth allows enemys to fling you into walls, and it can fling far. I lost many lives to this. Either get knockback res, get teleports that go through walls, or be careful when using, I wasnt and died 3 times to this.
- Personally I didn't use the slow death category, but I could see it being useful in gaining insanity passively

I am not a pro at this game, I've been playing on and off for 2 years and am finally really getting into it. However whenever I see stuff online about my classes they're really old and hard to read, thats part of why I wanted to make this. I'm sure theres things I have that are wrong and I highly recommend experimenting with different strat. Good luck my fellow Tomers

Newbie question about keybinding

Discovered this game yesterday and didn’t have a whole lot of time before responsibilities kicked in.

I’m wondering if anyone has redone their keys to mimic Caves of Qud. I’ve started it by moving my stairs button to k+ and k- and I think I’ll move autoexplore, if nothing is in the way.
Just curious if anyone else did this

Increase in game crashes

Been having a near un-playable amount of game crashes that only happen between loading screens, has anyone else been having this issue?

Ive tried a clean install, mods/no mods, deleting certain files, trying different or default settings, etc. nothing seems to fix it. I'm thinking its an AMD or windows problem but I've had this same PC for years and have not had issues like this before.

Can't find anyone reporting this on the forums either, help!!!

First win in roguellike mode!

I just wanted to share my win, after so many attempts in the nightmare difficulty.
https://te4.org/characters/355745/tome/4135d4c8-e0c6-49a6-a045-a1060771fe89

If you are struggling in the T2-T3 dungeons like I was for a long time, keep trying! You'll find that run where you encounter a good weapon early or you start to know when to run and come later with better/different equipment.

Particularly the cursed has been so much fun and felt like high peaks and the final battle was just a cakewalk

Worst class combos to go against?

I’d like to know what people consider to be the most dangerous or annoying class combinations you have to fight that make you start thinking up names for your new character. Everyone has probably been stonewalled by an Oozemancer or flurried to death by a Rogue, but I’m talking randbosses and uniques. In my experience, most enemies that are functionally immortal usually have a celestial component to them. Anorithils and Sun Paladins I can mow down without a second thought when they’re a rare, but on a randboss they become a serious threat. Case in point, an Anorithil/Writhing One randboss is currently preventing me from advancing in Dreadfell. On top of its ridiculous healing it can also stack all resistance and shut me down with its silencing circle and Shadow Simulacrum which I completely forgot about.

Any advice that you would want to know before u started playing ToME4?

Hi, I have just started my journey with ToME4, right now its the most enjoyable game for me, but I have couple of problems.

1)As stated in the title Any advice that you would want to know before u started playing ToME4?

2) Rn, Im playing halfling-rogue, its very enjoyable for me. Are there any things that I should know while playing as rogue? On what should I focus etc. Im asking, because I have problem with crossing getting past lvl 20 ( Im not sure if its my skill issue or Im playing it wrong)

3)I've tried only couple of classes shouldn't I try more of them? Or stay with rogue and try to beat the game with it? And whats your favorite class? And why? ;3

(Sorry for my shitty english, its not my main language)

Have good day!

Auto-use Talents & Resting

Hello, I'm playing ogre and have Ogric Wrath set on Auto-use when enemies are visible & adjacent

Now I understand it can be a bit fiddly with activated talents and auto-use since it could loop forever, but the way I have it set up it wouldn't activate(hence no infinite loop) except for when enemies are right next to me(which would cancel the rest, hence no infinite loop).

Is there any way or any add-on to make resting wait for my auto-use ogric wrath?

Looking for a guide or discussion on Archmage Shielding

I'm coming from spending many hours delving into and playing Oozemancer, and just starting out with Archmage. So I definitely need to understand shielding. Seems fairly complex at this point. Any help is greatly appreciated!

i get it now

i have had a couple games like this that i would buy and forget. for some reason, i decided to actually give this one a go last week. my first real run, i played possessor, will probably play possessor until I hopefully win. i just died at level 21 (i think probably 20 hours in?) in halfling complex being greedy, but it was bound to happen. i had been getting really lucky my whole run. made a lot of mistakes, will make even more. playing this class fulfilled my wish to play as the boss. maybe i’ll give PoA, CoQ and Dwarf Fortress some honest goes one of these days too, but i have a feeling Tales will be taking my attention for a long time til then

terrible timing as i am in the thick of my two accelerated summer accounting classes so i’ll probably not play that seriously again for a month or two til they’re over. funnily enough, it feels like getting into accounting has made me more drawn to these detail-oriented management games, two things i never thought i’d enjoy. i will be curbing my fix by watching and reading what i can about stats and lore that i’ve encountered so far 🙏

tbh i am sad tho i didn’t get to try out the robe i found that puts you to sleep and lets you interact while asleep. also unfortunately placed netherworm masses that got to multiply endlessly before i could get the spawner, boulder throwers (derogatory) on daikara and dreaming horrors sending non-stop bubbles off screen, y’all almost broke me

Naming characters in tome4 is fun

Idk when I started doing this. But everytime i make a new character for the first time on a class, they become the root character for that class. Every character after them is named after the first. The new character will have a slight alteration on the previos characters name, but they are related.

Example:

Willbur the worm lover (Writhing One) -> Wally the worm lover (Writhing One)
Wubbles the worm (Willburs worm summon) -> Waddles the worm (Wallys worm summon)

Doing this has lead to some entire like multi-lineage stories (usually because of necromancer or vampire queen ending runs). As well as some really goofy stories. Like both Willbur and Wubbles lost a life to suffocation.

Doing this has created some some crazy name growth. I started my first ever Paradox mage as MeguManiac, It then eventually became YugaPhobia, and finally MollyMadTime, which I now use as my reddit username.

Sometimes I'll even have characters go cross class. For example MeguManiac is the birthplace of all magic classes in my mind. So my archmages have taken the Megu from it, which has now become Meru.

This is just a fun thing I do to make my own headcannon and I really enjoy Tome4 so I thought it would be fun to share.
