I know it might not be for everyone. Theres a couple minor mistakes but meh. Ceiling was f***ed, framing was f***ed. I framed the sloped ceiling like a crazy person to get it right, but I was able to do pull-ups on each stick I used so good enough.

I didn't get great pictures of the hex penny tiles but I effing nailed that along all the perimeter.

Ceiling is sloped 2 inch per foot, works great till it drips onto their backs lol, oops.

Heated floors and seats. Even the towel bar is heated! Shower spout is built into the ceiling but I forgot to get a picture lol. It actually looks super cool and the placement is great. Maybe I'll update the post later.

Oh and there is a light strip in the back that isn't hooked up yet.

Homeowner - Advice about my Contractor New Tile Failed Tap Test (Advice Requested)

Post image

I was looking for some suggestions, I had some new tile put in yesterday by a contractor and those 2 spots failed the tap test. Im not sure if I should have them come out to fix it or if it isnt that big of an issue.

Edit: Thanks for the help you guys, I wasn't too worried about it but wanted a second opinion since I only do DIY stuff so the replies helped clear up my concerns.

DIY - Looking for Advice Were These Set Correctly?

Post image

I tiled a wall a few weeks back, and had to demo it today for various reasons. I used a sawzaw to cut through the wall at the grout lines and pulled back sections of wall at a time. The tiles were popping off the thinset, and looking at them I’m wondering if they look too clean, as though they were not set correctly. I used versabond modified, and mixed according to insteuctions, using the mid point of their water ratio recommendation. Wet the back of each tile with a damp sponge and back buttered each tile. Used 1/4” x 3/8” trowel and pushed tile into thinset. See photo of the back of the tiles and the thinset. Do they look too clean to have been set correctly? If so, any ideas what the issue could be?

I see old posts and arguments for both, the manufacturer of the tub shows wall backer to the flange and tile over that, or do I need to fur the wall out so the gobaord comes over the flange for the tile?

DIY - Looking for Advice I need help with shower grout

Shower grout is cracking in some places and had low levels around some tiles. I started to try and scratch some grout out of the lines to lay new grout, but the grout lines are so small. The tiles are penny hexagon tile so it is taking forever. Do I need to fully scrape it every grout line? Can I spot treat? Is there any trick to help loosen the grout better or a tool that will make it more efficient for me? I would appreciate any help!

DIY - Looking for Advice Think I’m in big trouble…

I’m trying to remodel my bathroom, unsuccessfully it appears. I’ve gotten to the point where my floor tile is down and I wasn’t too happy with the finished result, but figured I could live with it. I am just about to grout this weekend when I noticed the floor is flexing underneath me when I walk on it. You can’t feel it when you’re walking but I can see it when my wife is walking around. We have a small format tile mosaic which I think was my first mistake. My second mistake was listening to a family member who has some light tile experience, but is far from an expert. He suggested we lay the cement board directly to the decking subfloor, without any plywood or any thin set to hold the cement board. He said that would be overkill and not necessary. My question to you all would be if grouting at this point is a huge mistake, and if I’m better off cutting my losses and starting over? Or would grouting help with the flexing in any way and may be salvaged? I’m pretty sure I know the answer but wanted to ask before undoing weeks of time and work.
Thanks in advance.

DIY - Looking for Advice What grout color should I use?

Post image
1 Upvotes

What color grout should I use for this tile? Should I match the background color (very light gray), the center where all the corners meet (dark blue), or the corner petal colors (medium bluish gray)?

I was initially thinking of going with MAPEI Frost to match the background color (the color swatch on the bag looks like a close match to my eye) but I'm now wondering if that would make the "flower" center where the corners meet look weird since the grout lines will stand out against it.

Tile I'm using: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Daltile-Handcrafted-Artistry-Starburst-Blue-4-in-x-4-in-Glossy-Ceramic-Handcrafted-look-Wall-Tile-0-128-sq-ft-Piece/5016222375

Grout color I was considering: https://www.lowes.com/pd/MAPEI-Keracolor-U-10-lb-Frost-Unsanded-Grout/5013222549

I would like to choose a color from the MAPEI Keracolor since that's what's available at the Lowe's down the street from me. I'd appreciate any help with color selection!

DIY - Looking for Advice Grout Haze on Limestone

Grout wasn’t cleaned thoroughly enough off natural limestone tiles. How do I get the haze off? I can’t use an acid based cleaner. My best method so far is scraping and then polishing each tile with a green scrub pad. It’s exhausting, is there a better approach?

DIY - Looking for Advice Epoxy grout wont clean??

I’ve tried using peroxide, regular dish soap, and stone tech cleaner. This grout is only about eight months old. I tried using a scrub brush. It doesn’t seem to be able to come clean. I didn’t seal it because at the time I installed it I was under the impression that you didn’t have to with epoxy grout. Any help is much appreciated

Professional - Looking for Advice Wrong sealant on Hydro Ban backer board

I’m a builder, not a tile pro. On a new build project, Dap AMP sealant/caulk was used instead of Laticrete sealant on the seams and screws of Hydro Ban foam backerboard. Both are a modified polymer sealant/adhesive but I hear thinset might not stick to the AMP but it can to the Laticrete sealant. How screwed is this project? Any suggestions on remediation if needed?

DIY - Looking for Advice First Time Tiler - wrong trowel?

I installed my Ditra membrane with the recommended 11/64 square trowel, but then stupidly used the same trowel for my tiles (12x12”). I just realized it now and they have all been down for a couple of hours.

Most grout lines had to be cleaned out, so I think there is a lot of coverage, but I’m freaking out a bit.

Am I screwed?

DIY - Looking for Advice How's my plan?

Prepping for tile around a run in an old 1890 home. Back wall is brick and cement. Tub installer screwed the tub into cement but also thin set the tub in place so it isn't moving.

I think my plan is to remove the screws, then tape over the seam between wall and tub to give it some texture. Then mortar up the wall to grade it out so the lip isn't so prominent. Then waterproof layer and send it.

Laying 3x6 subway tile and not looking for perfection but want it to look as good as possible.

Thoughts?
