23 July 1967. A police raid on an unlicensed Detroit bar hosting a Vietnam veterans' welcome-home party ignited five days of unrest. Tanks entered the streets of the Motor City, federal troops were sent in, and 43 people were killed.

July 22, 1992 - Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar escaped from La Catedral, a lavish prison in Medellín, Colombia that he had built under a special agreement with the government. After murdering cartel members inside, he escaped his own prison for over 14 months, until a shootout led to his death.

July 21, 1983. Earth recorded its coldest air temperature ever measured

On July 21, 1983, the Soviet Vostok Station in Antarctica recorded an air temperature of −89.2°C (−128.6°F) — still the lowest directly measured air temperature on Earth.

The station sits more than 3,400 meters above sea level on the East Antarctic Plateau, where clear skies, extremely dry air, and weeks without sunlight can create some of the coldest conditions on the planet.

Satellite observations have since detected even colder surface temperatures, down to about −98°C (-144.4°F), but those don’t count as the official record because they measure the snow surface rather than the air measured by a weather station.
