so i was watching a video that just shows the final moments of Sir john franklin and i was wondering if this is a cut image from the released version as i have not seen this little image of open water before.

Ok, I don’t think I watched this every year, but this is definitely at least a third time through. It’s just so good, I get drawn in every time, and there are so many brilliant details. 1. When Hickey gets caught peeing inside the tent before the fire breaks out at the Carnival, the officer (is it DeVos? still can’t quite make out all the secondary characters, even though every actor is pretty stellar) says to take it outside “unless you want that ripped off” - foreshadowing what Hickey does to Irving; 2. when poor Jopson (who is a SNACK how did I not notice this before) crawls across the dream table full of food in his final vision, the cooked birds on the table are swans (like in the song they sing for Sir John and start to forget the words) in what Prince might call “curious poses”. 3. The one scene I can’t rewatch is Irving with the Inuit people. What happens is too brutal. Thanks again to all the artists, the writers actors, and directors, but also the set dressers and the music supervisors (the music is absolutely a huge part of making the show work) and the costume designers, the Inuit consultants, and everyone who made this show exist.

Did the ritual not work? Did it reject her in some way? After it brought her the seal I thought it would be be pleased she finally wanted to become bound to it

I pulled this from HMS Terror by Matthew Betts which chronicles his modeling of the setting during The Terror and thought since it involves both sides of the pond, we could all enjoy before the Knock-Me-Down kicks in. Cheers!

Battle of Baltimore

From Stonington, the squadron proceeded south for ‘working up into the Chesapeake’, arriving on 24 August.25 Baltimore, along with Philadelphia and Washington, had been a target of Admiral Cochrane since receiving Sir George Prevost’s letter in June. For the next fortnight they would patrol the Patuxent and Potomac Rivers and the Chesapeake estuary, often in the vicinity of Tangier Island. This time, Cochrane would command the fleet himself. By now, he had assembled a formidable naval squadron which included five bomb vessels, Meteor, Volcano, Aetna, Devastation and Terror, as well as the rocket ship Erebus. Rounding out the fleet were seven frigates and three schooners. As recorded in Terror’s log, the armada began ‘running up towards for Baltimore’ on the afternoon of 11 September for a battle that had become inevitable. The bomb ships were to assail Fort McHenry, prior to a land assault by Major General Armistead’s forces. At 0600hrs on 12 September Terror made sail inshore and fired signal shells at the fort, presumably for ranging or reconnaissance purposes. At 0900hrs they began a bombardment of the ‘Battery of Baltimore’ that continued for the next twelve hours.26 Terror’s log records that she received occasional fire from the enemy, but only Devastation, Volcano and Erebus were damaged. At 0100hrs on the 13th Terror recommenced firing for another four hours. She halted fire briefly, then at 0600hrs she was given orders to fire ‘occasionally’ to cover the withdrawal of the troops. At 0738hrs on 14 September Terror’s log indicates she received ‘orders to discontinue engagement’ and to move farther out from the shore. In the afternoon she was engaged covering the re-embarking of troops near ‘Patapsco Neck’. For the next two days she remained in the area assisting with the re-embarkation.

Though the Americans did not surrender the fort and the British retreated early, this was the longest engagement of Terror’s wartime career, and the most historically significant. Terror and her sister bombs fired between 1,500 and 1,800 mortar shells and carcasses at Fort McHenry. Terror’s log does not document the amount of ordnance it expended in the bombardment, but approximately three hundred mortars would have been exhausted if each bomb ship fired roughly equal numbers. The fort had been substantially reinforced prior to the engagement and was far from destroyed, but the shelling caused considerable damage, destroying and dismounting guns, and inflicting dreadful injuries to men and women within the fort.

The battle was observed by a Georgetown lawyer, Francis Scott Key,27, who belonged to a group of American emissaries negotiating a release of prisoners with Cochrane. Key, who spent the battle onboard a ship of truce which was lashed to a non-combatant British vessel, watched the action closely from the harrowing position of the enemy. The battle’s spectacular night-time explosions inspired Key to write a lyric poem which he originally entitled ‘The Defense of Fort McHenry’. In it, he notes the ‘rockets’ red glare’ (fired from Erebus) and the ‘bombs bursting in air’, fired by Terror and her sister bomb vessels, which had illuminated the ‘Star Spangled Banner’. The lyrics were set to music, ironically using the melody of the British ‘To Anacreon in Heaven’, and became immensely popular in the following decades. The song, and its lyrics, were the de facto national anthem for the United States long before it was made official in 1931. Despite the song’s significance, it is unlikely any of Terror’s subsequent crews realized the link between their vessel and the American anthem. Instead, they were making their own history with Terror, relegating this incredible historical link, probably a defining moment for any other war vessel, to a minor footnote in Terror’s career.

The British fleet, including Terror, began a leisurely withdrawal, tracing the way she had sailed on 15 September, eventually anchoring in the Patuxent River on 18 September. They remained in the area for months, cruising the Chesapeake and various rivers, but generally remaining in the vicinity of the Potomac until 21 December. Significant action did not take place, although 14 October was nonetheless a remarkable day for Terror. In the morning twilight, the ship’s lookouts spotted a group waving a flag from shore. At some risk, they dispatched the ship’s gig to investigate, and returned with eight men, five women, and eleven children, all ‘Black People’.28 No further elaboration is given in the log, but clearly these were slaves who used the British presence in the area to seek their freedom.

That same afternoon, Terror took her first and only prize in a short engagement. At 1330hrs the lookout spotted a suspicious schooner running downstream. Making all sail and firing several warning shots, Terror brought her to (how she accomplished this with her slow sailing qualities is unknown), discovering that she was a Portuguese vessel which was attempting to run the British blockade of Baltimore for Porto. Sheridan appointed one of his lieutenants to take command of the schooner and Terror spent the next day in company with her, before she sailed off.

On 18 October Terror struck aground near Sharp’s Island. Over four tense days, her crew offloaded ordnance and stores, and attempted to protect her from potential threats in the dense forests which surrounded her. Finally, on 22 October she was heaved off the bank and her stores returned. Terror spent the rest of the autumn in the area, maintaining a blockade of Baltimore and local towns. This time was relatively unremarkable for Terror, as blockades tend to be.

Hi all! I love this show and have recently been rewatching it.

It’s got me wanting to explore some theatre scripts that are similar, whether they be similar in feeling and themes, or similar in historical context and setting.

Hoping someone’s aware of a script or two that they could point me in the direction of.

Goodsir noted that Irving had been totally castrated/emasculated, and also that his liver was missing. These parts were not found at the kill site -- just his intestines. So his penis, testicles, and liver were all cut out and nowhere to be found.

The implication seems to be that Hickey must have eaten them...right?

Apparently this is an unpopular opinion around here lol so before you all come at me, let me first say I KNOW he's awful and he deserves everything he gets and you shouldn't eat your friends blah blah. I'm not defending him. He's terrible.

But as a character? He's fantastic. He's magnetic. He's so well written and phenomenally acted. I couldn't take my eyes off of him. I am forever a fan of Adam Nagaitis now.

The little evil sparkle in his eye? The GRIN?? UGH be still my twisted heart. If he told me to eat my buddies I'd be like ok yes sir you adorable little problem, whatever you say. Hell go ahead you can eat my leg too I don't need it. You want to mutiny? Ok well count me in the only thing I'm loyal to is your skinny ginger aura of absolute chaos. If Mr. Hickey has 100000 fans I am one of them. If he has 1 fan it is me. If he has no fans I am dead. And eaten, probably.

And holy shit, I am so fucking tired of reading about bosoms, aereolas, pubic hair and the other sundry mounds of these disturbingly mid pubescent women. I had heard that this was a problem before I started, and I am not an excessively prudish person, but even after pushing through the excessively explicit and uncomfortable nature of the writing, I am still a gay man and, I DO NOT GIVE A FUCK. If you have ever read 2000 Leagues Under the Sea, Jules Vernes had the same god damn problem with the fish; just droning on and on for pages, with every florid detail of every contour. It’s dull as shit. No wonder it’s a 28 hour audio book. I fucking get it; they are men and they are horny, so they perv on every women at every possible opportunity. At a certain point, I no longer believe that these men were THAT sexually repressed. It’s both disturbing and pathetic. Just jerk off for fucks sake. Where’s that passage? The language of it all is like vintage bodice ripper romance novel. Especially the whole platypus pond scene .

Do straight guys enjoy reading this? Do women? It really does make it frustrating to read through.

Reading the terror for the first time (just finished rewatching the series) and it’s helping me escape the 95F temps outside with all of its frozen misery.

Loving the book so far, just got to Goodsir’s account of the expedition led by Gore.

It’s now been 181 years since the Franklin expedition left to find the north west passage and I feel like we are still none the wiser. I know we’ve discovered a lot, more than we expected but what’s next? With Parks Canada no longer exploring the ships themselves and any on land documents being long gone what is next for this mystery? I know there is ongoing work in regards to identifying bodies and working through family trees and the sorts which I find hugely interesting and the work is so impressive but is that it now? I adore the show, I adore the book I have read every post on Parks Canada I am reading David C Woodmans book and I have read as much as possible on this subject which is why I feel quite somber now wondering what the next step is, I knew we would never find the golden goose (the ships log) realistically and knew we’d never know definitively what happened but to feel like the mystery is closing with no real answers disappoints me greatly. Idk maybe you guys can inform me of something I haven’t considered.

So I am watching episode 3 again and at 26:23 during the scene where they are taking the photo a tiny bit of snow falls of the ice surrounding the hunting tent . Is the snow falling caused by tunbaqq

I entered Terror Bay into Google Earth and it took me to Alaska! For a second I thought maybe it was a different Terror Bay until I read the description under the map that confirmed it was the one related to The Franklin Expedition, just totally wrong side of North America. Recommend they change name of app to Google Derp.

Theres just something almost enchanting about it. Tom Sellwood does a formidable job with the Narration throughout which just lifts the story even more. I've probably listened 5 times in total and I just feel like I'm there on the ice with them. Bleak, Cold, scared to death but somehow oddly comforted.

I love this story so much.

His entire storyline and character arc makes my heart ache. The first time I watched it, his story didn't leave my head. His transformation from the slightly naive, pure hearted doctor to the numb, jaded and hopeless man who takes his own life, trying to bring down his mortal enemies with him, is IMO one of the best on television.

And yet, despite how good it is, I find it really difficult to watch his last episode. The music, the imagery...his death, utterly alone and at the end of his rope, is its own terror among the many more overt terrors of this show.
