For all the LA Big pic heads

I am now 2+ years running of finishing and new movie and knowing in my bones “well that was good/great/exceptional but I didn’t like it as much as CHALLENGERS.” There have definitely been some strong contenders, but nothing has quite wormed its way to the top of my personal canon as much as Challengers has since Challengers.

I think before that, Uncut Gems held the belt for 5+ years (tho Dune Part 2 maybe had a monthlong run as the belt holder before Challengers).

You might think this is a dumb way to watch movies but I think it’s just completely natural; some movies just hit you different. I would imagine it’s a long while before something takes Fennessey’s belt away from One Battle After Another, for instance (tho I can’t quite put my finger on what’s Dobbins’ belt holder; it might still be Lady Bird).

What movie holds your belt? If it’s the Odyssey, what was holding your belt before then?

The Full Picture now includes the show's entire backlog dating back to 2017! With a little bit of re-engineering and disposable cash on my side, the site is now a true historical index of the show and, probably, every movie ever referenced on the show.

New features on the site include:

• An index of every movie mentioned – A click on a movie title brings you to a details page with links to the episodes where the movie was mentioned
• An index of every episode of the show
• A search function allowing you to search for a movie or episode topic

Next up is figuring out approximate time-stamps for a movie's reference in the show. Dynamic ad insertion (DAI) makes that difficult as a time-stamp on my download may not match up with your download, but it should be relatively close. I am also exploring each episode's page serving up the MP3 in the background and having the timestamp play the MP3 on the site itself.

I was hoping to create an automation where The Full Picture would auto-comment on a new episode's thread in /r/TheBigPicture with a link to the site after it's been published, but Reddit's new, draconian API frowns on that. For now, I just post manually.

This is a fun project and I'm enjoying seeing folks continuing to use the site. Let me know if there's anything fun that you'd like to see on the site! Alright, no more self-promotion.

Obviously there are other top directors, but I feel these four are roughly the same age, have about the same output, and appeal to a certain type of person who happens to be very similar to Sean Fennessey (of which I am one).

Directors are judged on:
• Body of work: Have they reliably delivered on expectations over a long career? For some directors that means box-office success; for others, critical acclaim and award nominations. The key here is consistency: One of the biggest compliments insiders can give is that a filmmaker “never misses.”

• Bankability: Can they turn a $100 million budget into a billion-dollar gross? If not, what about turning a $10 million budget into a $100 million gross?

• Creative control: Are they the primary author of a film, or merely a hired gun? The more a director puts their aesthetic stamp on a project, the more credit they get for its success.

• Prestige: It’s not just trophies on a shelf. Attracting A-List talent remains one of the fastest ways to get a green light, and dangling the image of an Oscar podium or Cannes red carpet remains an effective way to land a star.

• Reputation: In the age of Letterboxd and Rotten Tomatoes, it’s never been easier for studios and financiers to quantify the reach of a single director. Every parasocial subreddit matters.

• Potential: “Is it up and to the right for these people, or down and to the left?” says a producer. Meaning, have they already peaked, or is the best yet to come? We’re not just looking backwards with this list; we’re trying to create a snapshot of who has power right now. That means identifying names on an upward trajectory, no matter how scant their resumes may be.

Yes, I'm one of those people who like watching these pods, rather than just listening to them.

Basically, I've been struggling to find the video versions of the podcast for a while. Everything on the YT channel is older than 4 months. Obviously, they've been releasing the audio on Spotify. But Ive also been seeing YT shorts of much recent pods, but haven't been able to find the complete video pod. I, vaguely, remember them mentioning Netflix. But, I haven't been able to find them there either.

Do they not upload the videos anywhere? Or am I missing something?

On most recent episode, they had a brief discussion about the Bourne series and mentioned their faves.

Sean called Ultimatum wonky and the worst of the initial trilogy which I would disagree with. The Waterloo and Tangier’s sequences are franchise bests and it has the great phone call with Strathairn where Bourne says “If you were in your office, we’d be having this conversation face-to-face”

My personal ranking would be:
