Had a family get together the past weekend. Brought Sammy out on the back porch so he could join everyone. He sat with me for about 5 minutes, then wandered around the porch for awhile, then proceeded to jump up on my 87 year old mother in laws lap and climb up to lick her face (she was fine with all that). Then on to being held by my daughter for 5 minutes. Back down for some wandering, then over to my wife's uncle where he also tried to get lap time (unwanted, denied). He eyed up my sister in law's lap numerous times, but when told "NO" sternly he moved on. Then back to me for some additional lap time.

Picture is Sammy eyeing up the new door I just built for the porch with a mind to do some roaming. Most likely he would just walk around the house to the front door to be let in, which is his normal routine.

I recently got a rehomed 8 month old red tegu, am I crazy in thinking shes not very.... well, red? Aside from tiny babies the only tegus I've worked with have been black and whites (im a monitor person typically). The people I got her from took great care of her so I don't think its malnutrition or anything wrong with her, ive always just seen babies or full grown adults that are much darker red. What do you think?

P.S. Her name is Hades and she's been an Angel so far. Very much reminds me of the old black and white I used to work with every day :)

Lol jokes aside the first pic of her is from the day I bought her (she proceeded to brumate for 6 months :/ she didn’t lose weight though so, I think she was just being weird) and after a few months of being out of brumation she’s eating like a horse and looks like a little potato.

She’s a bit on the heftier side but she’s growing quickly and needs the protein (she’s on a diet of ground chicken, ground turkey, sardine, banana, strawberry, blackberry, and blueberry. Mainly the meat though). She’s currently 1 year old!

(Yes she is missing part of her tail and yes that’s a bite mark on her back in the first pic, she was bitten on the back by a sibling and had her tail bitten off also by a sibling- not while in my care of course! Her tail hasn’t grown at all since so I don’t think she’s gonna be regenerating it sadly but it doesn’t seem to bother her. The bite mark healed after 2 sheds though so that’s good! I decided to adopt her instead of any of her siblings because I felt bad for her little tail lol)

My baby tegu sometimes tries to jump into her light bulb. Why?

I just ordered a 8x4x4 from reptile kages I was wondering what uvb fixture is recommend for this size of enclosure?

I’ve had this question to all big lizards in general. If I get a dog no matter the size I don’t expect to be bitten by it, ever. Even tho bites do rarely happen to some people it is unlikely enough that you don’t reasonably expect to ever be bitten when getting a dog.

But from my research when it comes to tegus and other large lizards people talk as if bites are just an eventual reality. For me it would kind of be a disaster if I sustain permanent nerve damage or even just stitches. I can discern the possibility of bites even from people talking about supposedly tame tegus. Are bites from your tegu just an inescapable eventual reality, is it more of a exceedingly unlikely thing?

And I primarily refer to adults or the stage where bites become significant

Hello I just wanted to sex my tegu. I’ve had them for about 2 years going onto three and they roughly less than 3 feet in size. I was told they were a male but I’m having my doubts now. If anyone of you could help that would be great.

Hi there, I recently purchased a baby black and white tegu from my local reptile shop and currently have him/her in a 4x2x2. I plan to keep him/her in this enclosure for about 6 months until upgrading to the adult enclosure. My goal here was to make it cluttered enough to provide security while still allowing some space for roaming. Temps and humidity are all good - my only concern is that some of these cork logs, flats and hides are a bit big for a hatchling, hoping that won’t be an issue as I know they grow quickly. Anything else I should add / remove?

Those of you using grow tents, could you show me how you have it set up? I really like the idea of using one and being able to give my guy the extra space before we’re ready to commit to building something crazy. Thanks for any help!

Anyone have any tips on how to tame my tegu and calm down food aggression. I just got her two weeks ago and she is almost a year old. Recently I had to go to my dad’s house for a week and I had my mom and stepdad take care of her. While she was there she got very food aggressiv. She never even let me touch her before and just ran away but now she doesn’t let me touch her and tries to bite me. Just need some tips on how I can fix this because Google isn’t helping.

This is his enclosure for now till he outgrows it then he’s going into his 5ft long 2ft wide 2ft tall enclosure and then that enclosure will be open 24/7 and he’ll have a gate so bigger than 5ft but the rest won’t be surround by glass just mesh but anyway right now I wanna know if he’s ok in this setup till then oh and the reason his basking spot if bare is cause he had a basking long there but he moved it out of the way and chose to just lay like he is in the video so no comments about that please that’s what he likes.

Came out to this. Thought surrounding in the clay rocks would help. Well the rocks moved one stayed and now they just pull the plant out and this. How do yall keep your plants alive or do you not?
