Built in Belfast in 1885, the three-masted cargo vessel was built to carry coal and nitrate between England and South America, sailing around the Cape Horn 16 times.
The ship took around six months to build and was made from iron, which had become the favoured material for ship builders since the 1830s.
The Barque was built for the W.J. Woodside Co. owned by William Woodside a ‘dynamic entrepreneur’ and was named after his wife Marian (Polly).

These two weeks traditionally the SKS Skûtsjesilen takes place in Friesland, sailing races with historical freight boats from the early 20th century. Last saturday was the opening race, as always on the lakes near Grou. Here's the summary from Omrop Fryslân.

Could anyone help me identify these ships? They’re from an undated/unsigned painting of the view from Deptford dockyard, possibly late 18th-early 19th century

I made a sailmakers combined fid and seam tool. Based it off one I saw in a museum, but I can't remember exactly where (I think it may have been in Lancaster UK ).

How Accurate is This Description?

I'm writing a sailing scene and need some expert eyes to check if the descriptions are accurate. "Invitation to Sailing" by Alan Brown and "Two Years Before the Mast" are my guides, but I'm not sure if I have the terminology correct, or if the actions make sense.

This is set in a fantasy world. Think 1400's. Ship has two masts with a square-rigged mainsail and a lateen on the mizzen.

**

The waves at the edge of the horizon were dark. Bad weather was ahead.

In response, the captain ordered them to reef the mainsail. Up on the ropes, the crew pulled up the sail and tied it to the yard to reduce canvas. Wind was coming, and Zack did not want to be up the rigging when it came.

It wasn’t long after that the wind picked up and the waves became white horses. The already overcast sky turned drastically dark. The culprit, a mounting gray cumulonimbus cloud on their port bow.

The captain ordered the entire crew on deck. For a brief moment Zack looked into the oncoming storm, knowing the powerful gusts that awaited them beneath fierce waves.

“Heave to!” the captain yelled. “Clew up the mainsail!”

In a race to heave to before the storm hit, the crew quickly tightened the outhaul to flatten the sail before the order was given to sail closer to the wind and brace the main. The rain poured hard and sudden.

I appreciate any constructive criticism! Thank you!

Wanting to get into sailing as a deckhand. Where to start?

I have done 2 tall ship trips and have 1000nm now. I was a paid passenger but did lots of sail work and loved the lifestyle.

How would one get into the life as a seaman when starting later in life with little experience?
