Where to get Bhajani Bongo in Mumbai?

While travelling in the local train, I came across the Bhajani Mandals. They have a customized Bongo that sounds just like the classic Dholki. I found it really cool. I couldn't ask them where they got it from. Where can I get that? What would be the cost?

Dayan ring (gajara) in student level tabla

Hi there! Some time ago I got a student tabla to start learning. I've always felt the gajara (the ring) in the Dayan is a little high so my palm is usually touching. Is this common in student level tablas?

I don't have mine with me right now but I've seen others with a similar issue. This is an example: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71osgyAInwL._AC_SL1280_.jpg

Does that look high to you? Some parts seem to be higher than others but when I see professional players, the gajara seems considerably lower.

Should one avoid getting these sets? Also, I've read that steel is not recommended for the Bayan, is that also something to avoid? Is the sound not good?

Thanks!

I just found a really cool tabla website

Solo I was searching for traditional tabla compositions shared by users on websites like chandrakantha but then I found vishwamohini.com which has got like thousands of tabla compositions, posted by users and a dedicated software. It's also beneficiary for vocal and instrumental musicians.

Selling my tabla for 5k

Hey folks, I’ve got a tabla kept in great condition. I’ve barely played it for a year before I lost interest and then studies and everything made it difficult to get back.

I’m asking 5k. This includes the cover, the hattodi and everything else. The covers are worn out, but everything else is kept well.

Here’s a drive link to the video of me playing the tabla earlier today: video link

My location is Kolhapur, Maharashtra (a few hours from Goa).

Please DM if you’re interested!

We built a lehra + tanpura riyaz app for tabla students — would love your honest feedback

Hi r/tabla,

We're the team behind LayaLab—an Android app built specifically for tabla students practicing at home.

We know how hard it can be to find high-quality lehra accompaniment for daily riyaz, especially without a live accompanist. That's the problem we set out to solve.

What LayaLab offers:

  • 38 unique lehra loops across 11 taals, including Teentaal, Jhaptaal, Roopak, Ektaal, Dhamar, Dadra, Chartal, and more
  • Harmonium, Sarangi, and Sitar accompaniment at authentic concert pitch
  • BPM Progression—set a starting and ending BPM, and the app gradually increases the tempo throughout your practice session
  • Full tanpura drone with pitch adjustment
  • Custom Beat Sequencer (Create tab) for creative exploration
  • Works completely offline after download
  • No subscription—Premium is a one-time purchase

We'd genuinely love to hear your feedback. If you use lehra apps for practice:

  • What features matter most to you?
  • Is there anything missing that would make LayaLab more useful for your riyaz?
  • Are there any taals, raags, or practice features you'd like to see added?

Try it free:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.navaeditions.layalab

Note: If you purchased the previous version of LayaLab, you're entitled to free lifetime access to this new version. Just send us a screenshot of your purchase or your order ID, and we'll activate it for you.

Thanks for taking a look! We're happy to answer any questions or discuss ideas for improving the app.

The LayaLab Team

Is this technique of playing "Na" correct?

The "Na" sound seems clear and crisp to me. However, I doubt that my pinky finger should not be lifted... Although my guru ji said it's not necessary to keep it fixed but I am still concerned as I'm very passionate about tabla... Any feedback will be helpful.😁 (Just ignore the broken syahi)

Free Resources

Hi everyone. I am new to tabla and I really want to learn — I recently got a tabla from my grandparents, in pretty good condition. I really want to learn but a lot of online resources are confusing or blocked behind a paywall. Sadly, I am unable to find a local guruji who can teach me and I can’t use an online teacher because I don’t have money. Does anyone have specific YouTube channels or web guides that I can follow to learn? Also, how does my tabla look, I think it’s pretty good and how do you tune a tabla? Thanks

Effect of weather on tabla?

I was looking to get a new pair on tabla. And it’s summer + rainy season here in Delhi these days. I wanted to ask, would that have any particular affects when I go tabla hunting? Is it advisable to putting off buying the tabla for some other season (winter will start in like 2-3 months).

Any Tabla players in Kolkata who'd like to practice together?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if there are enough tabla enthusiasts in Kolkata who would be interested in building an offline community.

The idea would be simple:

  1. Meet once or twice a month.

  2. Practice together regardless of skill level (beginner to advanced).

  3. Learn from each other, discuss gharanas, compositions, and techniques.

  4. Just enjoy playing tabla with fellow enthusiasts.

Would anyone from Kolkata be interested in something like this? If enough people are interested, we could create a group and plan our meetup.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Tabla Buying Guide

I'm planning to buy my first tabla set and would love some advice from experienced players.

I've also been quoted the following prices:

Steel: ₹16,500

Brass: ₹22,500

Copper: ₹25,500

Do these seem reasonable? If you have recommendations for good makers or shops (especially in Pune or Bengaluru), I'd really appreciate them.

Hello creatives, I hope you're having a great day!
Here's a freestyle I recorded at Kedleston Hall before my concert. The acoustics in the hall are incredible, so I couldn't resist playing.
No edits—just letting the tabla dance with the acoustics and fill the space with rhythm.
Hope you enjoy it!

How to start (again)

Hey great people,

I used to play tabla around 7 years ago, I used to learn it from a local teacher, she taught me very basic things, some taals and their variations but I never got the chance to go deep.

Now I want to restart from 0 and go deep in Indian classical especially tabla.

How and where do I start

Thanks in advance
