i'm too woke

i know this conversation has happened over and over again, but this credit card shit is abysmal. i just started working at Marshall's 3-4 weeks ago, and i'm already over it. i live in a very touristy area, so the store is busy in the summer. they have me working register, and i feel like i rarely get even a few minutes where i'm not ringing someone up, even on slower days. i'm also definitely the fastest one, because i don't dilly dally.

i barely ask if anyone wants to sign up for the credit card unless a manager or CEC is around because i think it is beyond stupid. i'm simply too aware of the state of the economy to ask people to fuck up their credit score or go into more debt. a senior coworker even "warned" me that the store manager takes the cards very seriously, and if i don't get enough sign ups, they could take it to CORPORATE! the only sign ups i get are when an assistant/floor manager comes up and asks the customer in Portuguese, and even though she got the sign up, she writes it down as me. i'll only ask once. most people i ask aren't stupid enough to fall for it.

one of the assistant manager's is always on my ass about it, telling me i have to ask because "it's part of my job". no it isn't! i am a cashier not a bank teller! this wasn't in the job description when i applied. if it was i would have tried to find another job. and she'll call quick meetings after closing and tell everyone we have to ask, and i know she's mostly talking to me. she tells us we have to engage with the customer and then ask them about the card. yes, let me make this person feel seen and have a friendly conversation with them, just to turn around and ask them to sign up for a credit card. do you see how fake that sounds!!! i know i'm just more introverted than other cashiers, but i don't want to have a conversation, and most people don't either, they just want to pay and leave.

the main thing that irks me is the assistant manager or CEC complaining about the long line, but then having a 5-10 minute conversation with a customer that SOMEONE ELSE is ringing up (so we just have to stand there awkwardly), and just holding the line up even more because they can't stop asking about the credit cards, despite being told no no no. and don't even get me started on the fact that they keep getting people who just moved to this country to sign up, or J1's who are literally only here for the summer to work before going back to their home country where they don't even have any TJX stores. it's so stupid. i feel like it's because they have no idea what they're even signing up for, they just hear that it's a 10% discount, which by the way, they barely make clear can only happen ONCE.

workjam says i'm front end/cashier until august 8th, and if that's true, i'll be ecstatic to be trained literally anywhere else

For anybody wondering why you cannot find this product in store:

BOH unpacks it, sets it aside immediately to purchase with an associate discount, and then likely just flips it for profit. So unless you give your manager advanced notice so they can make sure BOH doesn't snag it right out of the box, you probably won't be able to snag one of these. Very annoying.

Coworker Being Nasty

Upvotes

I don’t know if anyone else has had this problem. There’s a coworker who I texted a few months ago and told her that she couldn’t text me anymore. And I told her to stop texting me because she would say she had so much going on and needed to talk to me. All she would do is talk trash about coworkers and the managers. Whether it was in a text or a phone call. Now when we work the same shifts she looks at me like I shouldn’t be allowed in the store. Another thing. She would text me while she was at work on my day off and complain about coworkers and the managers. And she was always complaining about how she doesn’t want to be there and she wants to curl up in a ball and cry. And that no one treats her like an adult. She talks back to on of the managers. She ha autism but honestly a lot of the time she uses her autism as an excuse to try and get people to feel sorry for her and she uses it to try and get out of doing her job when she’s at work. She left TJ Maxx in December 2024 and worked at Publix for a few months then came back in summer of 2025. From what it sounded lIke, she left because she didn’t want to do what her managers there asked her to do. Even though all of her coworkers had to do the same task as well. I’m definitely tired of being looked at like I shouldn’t be allowed in the store. I’ve been at TJ Maxx 6 and 1/2 years. I’ve never had any problems with any of my managers and I do what they ask me to do without complaining. I know we have open door policy. But I don’t know if I should talk to the managers about her attitude towards me. The managers ask me to cover her 15 minute break in the fitting room and when I go to cover her break she looks at me like she’s pissed that I’m the one covering her break even though I’m doing what the managers asked.

Rant Today I struggled as a cashier

Today I picked up a cashier shift usually I’m on the men’s floor most of the time and sometimes the backroom but I decided to pick up a cashier shift since I’m technically a cashier (if they need backup they’ll call me it happened twice). It’s easy I know the basic steps and everything during the second week of my training I was trained to be a cashier for a week. Today was normal as usual and of course we have to ask every customer if they were shopping with the store card and if they want to apply. But I was asking the wrong way instead I would say if they want to apply for the card after I greet them and the coordinator let me know what I was doing wrong and reminded me that I didn’t ask the last two customers about the card. I’m going to be honest sometimes I forgot to ask I know that’s not an excuse in any way but it’s true sometimes I forget to ask customers about the card. She also said that she’s not always going to be there to help out and that I may need to be trained again. Later on, she brought the big training book and I was learning to do the store card application part again. After that, I resumed being a cashier and a few minutes later I got called to the backroom to help out and later to the women’s floor. Throughout the rest of my shift, I was bummed out because I felt embarrassed I was thinking back to what the coordinator said back during my training how if we’re only good at one department then we’re not useful and if we try to ask for more hours they won’t give it. Also, I was thinking back to when she said during my training that she would always be here and if we need any help or have questions, and that there are no stupid questions just for her in my eyes to contradict herself today. Maybe I’m just exaggerating thinking like that but now I’m worried because my anxiety was going up when she was letting me know of my mistakes and I fear if I keep making mistakes I’ll get fired even if it’s minor and now I’m afraid I won’t get more hours every time I see a shift I pick up just to work more hours. I feel useless because I can’t do cashier an easy job with some demands I can do everything else perfectly because I've been doing it for years.

Rant Kids in Marshall's

Just a quick rant..I don't HATE kids at all, infact I'm rather good at working with them, but I'm tired of parents taking their kids that don't know how to behave at all into my location and just letting them run around and do whatever they want! And it isn't usual disturbances like crying babies/infants.. you can't blame a parent for having a crying baby in public, that's just what babies do. It'll be children above the age of 6 just flat out SCREAMING at the top of their lungs and running around! And their parents will never tell them to stop or be quiet. I'm usually the person who closes up front and I swear I'll hear kids scream over anything and everything from halfway across the store! How do parents not feel embarrassed when this happens?? Do they just tune out every little thing that their kid does? I don't get it! Like please either gently correct your child's behavior or leave them at home with a family member or caregiver. Don't make the employees and customers deal with it 🥲

Rant Does your store struggle with painfully slow cashiers who chat a lot?

I move fast and always thinking ahead. When the customer is walking up, I'm already planning how I'm going to sort, scan, and bag. Meanwhile, some cashiers will spend 20 minutes on a tiny transaction because they're chatting and this is often mistaken for high engagement. One time a customer ended up buying a soda for a cashier because she kept commenting about how she loves the Fanta customer was buying.

Last night we only had 2 cashiers, and the other one was moving at a snail's pace. Even our men's coordinator was frustrated. Then a manager (who hadn't been there watching the front end) walked over, saw her folding something, and praised her for being "so fast." It honestly felt like taking 10 steps backward. How do managers miss what's actually slowing the front end down?

Rant I had an incredibly weird interaction with security and I feel like I need to tell someone

I was at TJ Maxx in Downtown Chicago last Saturday Afternoon and I found a bunch of hats that I was going to buy and was making my way to get a cart with an armful of hats. As I was walking to get a cart, which was at the front of the store, an employee stopped and confronted me about buying all those hats. She litterlally asked me if I was going to buy all those hats I said yes and she froze in shock. I continue to the entrance/exit, where they keep the carts. The employee walked up and said something to security and security tried to stop me by grabbing the hats out of my arm. I told him that I was getting a cart and he let me go and get a cart. I put my hats in the cart and my mother was in sight and was watching the whole thing. I put the hats in the cart and then told my mom what happened. The security gaurd came over to me and apologized to me over it. I appreciated that he apologized to me, considering that its a downtown store with probably he a lot of people stealing things, I get it. But the carts are right next to the down escalator. Terrible spot for them to be in. I understand that carts need to be in the front for people to come and get them to start their shopping, but on the down escalator side? That is just asking for trouble. I know this sub is mostly for TJX employees, but I just wanted to get this weird interaction off my chest.

Question Positivity!

I’ve been seeing a lot of negative posts on this sub lately, and I just want some positivity! So what are some things you LIKE about Tjmaxx, Marshall’s, Homegoods, Homesense, Sierra Trading Post, Winners, Tkmaxx? Whether you’re a customer, or an employee it doesn’t matter just anything and everything you like about the store/stores.

Rant Customer rant

Can we normalize customers NOT ripping open packages when it’s clearly sealed with a sensor sticker for a reason? The amount of beauty products we have to damage out daily because customers rip open boxes and get their gross grubby fingers all over it. It’s insanely unsanitary, no one else wants to buy something that your presumably unwashed hands, (the amount of people who still don’t wash their hands after using a public bathroom is appalling) have touched. We are NOT an ultra or Sephora, we don’t have testers, if you don’t know what color foundation you are that’s on you. Come prepared with what colors you want or need because that fenty highlight you just ripped the package to shreds to open now has to be thrown out. Same goes with eyeshadow pallets, body oil, nail polish, eyelashes, lotions….. just stop being a disrespectful shopper and learn to ASK SOMEONE IF YOU WANT TO SEE WHAT THE COLORS IN A PALLET LOOK LIKE!

Also the sensor stickers are there for a reason, use your brain to think ‘why is this sealed closed?’ Use deductive reasoning to answer your question. It’s common sense, stop being an AH.

The amount of entitled adults is wild, it’s a Tjmaxx, a discount store, if you really want makeup that you want to test GO TO ULTA FFS. 😡😡😡

Rant You have to bring the item you are returning! Common sense!

Ok so I had this lady who was returning a shirt and I see she had a future tag. I asked her “do you have the item that goes with this tag?” She stares at me and laughed saying “no. It’s at home.” I’m like maam you need the item in order to return it. You can’t just return it when you don’t have the item. You’ll need to bring it. She huffs and says in an annoying tone “but it’s heavy and I didn’t wanna bring it here. So I need to bring it, so you can’t do it right here” ummm NO

were pretty short staffed this summer due to living in a college town, and its led to me doing 14+ pallet trucks everyday by myself because we have no other backroom associates. i bust my butt trying to get it all done in the 4 hours i have before the next truck comes, all while hearing complaints from my gm that im not moving fast enough for her. today my asm told me that all the managers have been speaking very highly of me and that they really depend on me blah blah. if thats the case, why is all that i hear out of my gm's mouth complaints and negative comments? why cant she say to me that she thinks highly, but i have to hear it through someone emse

it makes it so hard for me to want to continue to be here when i have to do it all myself and they cant even tell me to my face that what im doing makes a difference

Question Coordinator position

I’ve been an associate for almost 1yr, and am getting offered a position as a mens coordinator. I’m leaning towards taking it, and am wondering the full duties of it, if there’s any coordinators in this sub! - I don’t want to hear negative things about taking this position since every store is different and I trust my specific store when it comes to most of the negative things I’ve seen people say.

I already put stuff out, organize and clean men’s, do markdowns, get beauty and fragrance calls. So it’s mostly tasks I’m already doing and love doing, but are there any other tasks you guys do or extra rules you abide by?

Theft Scam: People changing the receipts to say they paid cash when…

Hey! Have any other stores experienced the theft scam where people make HUGE returns - usually right under $200 so no manager needs to be called up, have a receipt that looks original and untampered with and will say they paid cash and they will ask for cash back for the return.

But if you go to “view original tender” it shows that they paid with gift cards yet the system will allow you to give them cash even though usually it only allows you to give the amount of cash they actually spent. (In this case of looking at the original tender, they either spent no cash or only $10 or so.)

It seems like they have their own receipt printers and are making duplicates of their original receipts and have somehow found out how to modify the he way our system works with allowing cash for returns?

For huge returns and people asking cash for them - ALWAYS look up the original tender and make sure you only give back whatever amount they paid with on the original tender they used!

Has anyone's location just enforce this rule with returned clothes to be processed?

When I came in for my shift today, I saw carts and totes full of clothes and I said "Woah what's going on here?" and I was told we're not allowed to take them to the fitting room to be processed until 7 PM and I think I was also told that only a manager is allowed to take them down there

PSA my experience.

TLDR; There are so many better jobs out there.

i recently left marshall’s after 3 months- and i couldn’t be happier. starting at my new job, my eyes have been opened to so many things. for starters, it is such a good feeling to not have to hound people to sign up for a card. i was also only getting around 10 hours a week as a part timer, barely making enough to live. i’m still part time at my new job, but i get at least 30 hours. i was in a toxic relationship with tjx, i thought i wouldn’t be able to find another job that offered breaks every shift, a stocked break room, and other “perks”, but if you’re in the same position i was in and you feel like you CANT leave, you definitely can and there are way better jobs and opportunities out there for you 🫶🏻.

Rant Y’all think this is right?

For the next few weeks I will be by myself in the men’s/kids department cuz the beauty coord is on vacation and they’re moving other coords around to fill in for other departments as well. I have to train the new associates coming in as well cuz ima need help🫩. My manager wanted me to do a big move in men’s all by myself but the coordinator helped me cuz even she knows it was a lot, like that project took me my whole shift to do. Like can yall at least pay me more?!! Make me coordinator?!? I’ve clearly shown interest in the position yet they’ve never asked me. The only reason they’re moving everyone is cuz of that useless key carrier/women’s coordinator they hired a few months ago. It’s been 6 MONTHS and she still can’t do shit right, like NOBODY likes her either . They’re making her admin to see how she does and I swear if they don’t fire her…. LIKE EVEN MY MANAGERS KNOW SHE DOESNT DO ANYTHING. My coworker that I used to work with at a store that is now closed transferred to our store cuz she knew they were looking for a coordinator at time, asked my manager if she could become the coordinator and they said no?!?!!? She’s been with the company for 6 years and she was a CEC at the old store?!!? This management has gotten worse over time i genuinely don’t know what’s happening.

How long after your background check did you start working at TJ Maxx?

Hi everyone! This will be my first job, so I’m not familiar with how the hiring process works and was hoping to hear about other people’s experiences.

I interviewed at TJ Maxx about two weeks ago, and the hiring manager told me I got the job during the interview. She said I just needed to complete the background check first.

I completed the background check through First Advantage, and the portal now says it’s completed and that TJX will review the results and contact me with the next steps. It’s been about nine days since I submitted it, and I haven’t heard anything yet.

Is this normal? About how long did it take for you to hear back or get your orientation/start date after completing your background check?

Thanks in advance!

Rant Store is ignoring availability

I have a shift tomorrow and I'll bring it up then but I'm just rather annoyed at the moment and I feel the need to talk about it.

I've been working for TJMaxx for more than a year now and I updated my availability for the summer a few months ago but my management seems to be only paying attention to that part of it that says I can work mornings now. I've been scheduled multiple times past the hours I've said I could work in the afternoons and twice really early in the morning when I've had 10am as my earliest time ever since I started working there.

I just tried to call out for one of my shifts after having it up for open shift release for ≈ a week now because I wanted to be polite and call out as early as I could and I was told to wait to see if anyone picks it up, which would be fine if it wasn't scheduled for a time I said I couldn't work.

Does anyone know if this is because of the system change? Should I just update my availability again or do I need to put my foot down and be direct. I'm god awful at confrontation and I hate letting my management down but I feel like this is somewhat unacceptable.

Question Help finding this dumb little guy

Post image
135 Upvotes

I hate that resellers basically ruin everything for everyone, but if anyone finds this little dude—purple or black version—I am willing to pay the price of the plushie + shipping (or we can do pickup if you’re in Austin). He’s supposed to be $19.99, I’m obsessed with him, but not enough to pay 2.5x like he’s made of gold. I just want a silly little guy for my fantasy bookshelf 😭

Funny Is it just me or today is a little off the rails?

Had someone bring up political labels because of my dark blue hair, SO MUCH TICKET SWITCHING, a mother and daughter get mad because I didn't let them mix and match bikini set sizes and mocked me as they walked out, got yelled at for keeping the bag behind the counter until the end of the transaction, customer not understand they can no longer make non-receipted returns and not leave saying we have to return it. I'm sure there's more to come. Just been cackling on the verge of a crash out. How's everyone's Sunday going??
