Since its that time of year again...Mod PSA on TBall tickets

Hi all,

Once again TBall has almost instantly sold out. The subreddit now normally delves into 80% of posters looking for tickets.

PLEASE BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL OF SCAMS. From personal experience, there are some genuine people here selling real tickets. There are a lot more scammers though. We don't want anyone being left cashless with no ticket, or worse, showing up on the night of the Ball and finding out their ticket is fake (after they've already gotten dressed up and inhaled 40 cans of Prazsky). So:

1) Use you gut - if someone is selling the exact number of tickets you want, and for cheap, that's suspicious.

2) If you think they might be genuine, comb through their reddit profile and see if they're often selling other tickets for events, which may not even in Ireland - that's suspicious.

3) If it's a new account with like 2 karma - stay away!

4) Everyone is a bot unless proven otherwise (honestly that's good advice beyond the scope of r/TCD).

Suspicious accounts mass-commenting on posts looking for tickets will be checked and may be given a temporary ban until the date of the Ball has passed. Unfortunately we don't have the resources to facilitate and moderate any sort of ticketswap thread or anything like that, as it'll become a mess.

Happy hunting, good luck in exams, and enjoy the Ball.

SCSS Lab Demonstrators

Upvotes

SCSS recently sent out the lab demonstrator application link - I have filled the application form and have gotten an approval email. I was just wondering if there is more to the hiring process rather than just filling out the form as the allotment section is still empty?

Are sports free for students at TCD? Like the swimming pool, Gym, Badminton etc..

Hi everyone, I wanted to ask about the sports facilities at TCD. Are facilities like the gym, swimming pool, badminton courts, and other sports available free of charge for students?

As a prospective PhD student, will access to these facilities already be included in my tuition or student fees, or is a separate membership required? If a membership is needed, could you let me know the approximate cost?

Hey! I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what the rules on absences are for the Human Resources master? I’m planning on doing a short trip and might miss two or three days at the beginning of October. We don’t have our schedule yet so I don’t know if I’ll have seminars or lectures then, I understand lectures are recorded

Thank you!

3rd Year Economics

Doing JH Economics, and choosing classes for 3rd year. Wondering if anyone recommends any economics classes? I have 15 ECTs for my second term and cannot decide. Hoping for something that may be easier to get a 1.1 in though, so more mathy subjects may be better.

Are Indian students being sold ‘fake dreams’?

The Journal published this yesterday: ‘They aggressively pushed Ireland’: Are students sold ‘fake dreams’ in five-star hotels in India? https://jrnl.ie/7088907

I’m not an Indian student, I’m an Irish postgrad student. I was wondering if any Indian students can attest to this? Or other international students? I’ve had a suspicion for a while that the university is taking advantage of international students, especially Indian and Chinese students.

Deliver My A-Level Results to TCD - CIE Direct?

I have taken my A-Levels at CIE and CIE offers the provisional result delivery service. It states that if a uni has CIE Direct account, CIE can deliver the result electronically on the results release day. If the uni doesn't have that, CIE will arrange DHL delivery, but it will take time and money.

Does anyone know whether TCD has the CIE Direct account and will receive my results on that day? Should I sign up for this service? (The DDL of signing up for this service is July 25th, very near) How did you deliver your A-Level results to TCD before? THX!

I’ve been accepted my firm offer at Trinity for PhD Religious Studies to begin in September. However, I am doing the PhD by distance. Do I still need to go in September? What do I do now until registration in August?

CAO score

Hi! I’m from Romania and got a 9,66% overall average on my final papers. That is above 565, but I’m not sure what it would be exactly, does anybody know?

With this score, I should be fine for a course that settled on 521 last year?

Accomodation Help me with Accommodation at TCD Ireland.

Hi everyone!

I'm an incoming female international Phd student at Trinity College Dublin, and I'll be starting in September. I'm currently looking for accommodation and have heard that there's a housing crisis in Ireland, so I wanted to ask for some advice.

My first preference is to stay on campus, so I wanted to know:

  1. Does Trinity College Dublin provide on-campus accommodation for students starting in September?
  2. If yes, what is the application process? When should I apply, and how competitive is it?
  3. What are the approximate costs (especially for a twin-sharing/2-sharing room, if available), payment schedule, and any important deadlines or eligibility requirements?

If getting on-campus accommodation isn't possible, I'd also appreciate recommendations for safe accommodation within walking distance of TCD.

  1. Are there any good student residences or private accommodations nearby that offer rooms for female students (preferably twin-sharing)?
  2. What is the typical monthly rent and overall cost for these options?
  3. How difficult is it to find accommodation for September, and when should I start looking?

Any tips, recommendations, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hesitating between TCD and UCD…

I'm a Spanish student who has just finished secondary school and the IB. I applied to TCD for four courses, with Economics and Sociology (Joint Honours) as my first choice. Unfortunately, I needed a 5 at SL and I missed it.

I also applied to UCD for Social Sciences (Two Subject Combination), where I can still study Economics and Sociology. However, I'll almost certainly get offers from TCD for either Social Policy and Sociology or Social Policy and Political Science.

If you were in my position, would you choose your preferred subject combination at UCD or go to TCD for its reputation?

Looking for one Irish and one American student to help with a PhD research project in Dublin (paid)

Hi everyone!

I'm a PhD researcher at LMU Munich (Germany) and a Trinity College Dublin alumnus. I'll be collecting spoken data in form of spontaneous conversations for my PhD at TCD this August and September, and I'm looking for one native speaker of Irish English and one native speaker of American English to act as conversation partners during the recording sessions.

What is the project about?

The project investigates communication practices between speakers of Irish English and American English in a study-abroad context. An American and an Irish participant currently living in Dublin are sought for a short recording session in the beginning of August and September conducted at Trinity College. The session includes taking part in conversational tasks. Financial compensation will be provided for participation.

Who am I looking for?

  • current university students
  • One native speaker of Irish English
  • One native speaker of American English
  • Friendly and comfortable having conversations with other students

What would you do?
You'll take part in a structured Joint Decision-Making Task with participants. Together you'll discuss a fictional university-related scenario, consider different possible solutions, and agree on a final decision. It's designed to be a natural conversation, so no preparation beyond familiarizing yourself with the task is required.

Time commitment

First set of recordings will take place from August 3 - August 7. The second part of recordings are set for September.

Each conversation lasts around 30 minutes, and you'll repeat the same task with each participant.

Compensation
The role is paid, and I'd be happy to discuss the details with interested volunteers.

The recordings will take place at Trinity College Dublin, it is crucial that the conversations are held in person.

If you're interested, or know someone who might be a good fit, please leave a comment, send me a DM, or contact me at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) .

I'd really appreciate any help or shares. Thanks so much!

Dennis

Goldsmith Hall Accommodation Experience?

Just wondering if anyone could share their experience living in Goldsmith Hall? I've received an accommodation offer there for next year but worried about noise from the train station and the shared bathroom situation.

I've been offered room 69.3.03, if anyone has any info on it (like apartment size, noise etc.) I would really appreciate it!
