Laptop Request UK Is a macbook neo good for a computer science student?

2 Upvotes

i'm going to study computer science at university next year, and need a laptop. however, my family doesn't have a lot of money and we can't afford anything that's too expensive. i was thinking of asking for a macbook neo, since it seems like it's a good option for me, but i'm unsure of how suitable it is for programming and if i might need to find something with 16gb ram instead of 8gb.

can i get other people's opinions on this? is there other budget friendly alternatives?

Laptop Request US A basic laptop for YouTube watching and surfing the web

2 Upvotes

* **Country**

The United States

* **Budget**

Under 600, I have no minimum price

* **Are you open to refurbs/used options? **

Not unless, it is a very, very good deal.

* **Screen size**

At least 14.5", the larger the better.

* **Weight limit**

It won't be carried much, so it doesn't matter

* **Purpose**

A laptop for fast, HD YouTube watching, browsing the web, Amazon shopping and basic Microsoft word

* **Intended usage**

I can guarantee this laptop will never be used to play video games(I'm looking for my father)

* **Desired battery life**

4+ hrs.

A backlit keyboard would be a great bonus but definitely not necessary.

Summary - I'm just looking for a basic laptop that is fairly fast at loading videos, news websites etc. Nothing fancy, and the easier to run the better. I assume I need at least 8gb ram but probably more.

Im gonna buy a new laptop and want some suggestions. Been eyeing Vivobook 14 go but I want a second opinion, perhaps there is something better out there? I’m fine with refurbs!

I work with game dev but I’m a writer so I only use inkle (word processor) and GitHub. If it can run Godot that would be great but not a must. Streaming is nice but not a must. If it can run steam and really really light weight games like pixel art games that’s also nice because that would allow me to playtest some of the games I work on.

Longer.

Lighter gaming. I wanna play the SDVE mod for Stardew Valley, along with some other download games from itch.io . I currently have a 200 dollar laptop from Walmart, and it can't run these things well

Laptop Request US Need suggestions for new large laptop

2 Upvotes

My current laptop, an HP ZBook of some sort, has been deteriorating recently, making it difficult to use for both work and personal use. I'm looking for any suggestions for a laptop (PC, not Mac) with:

  1. as large a screen as possible. i don't really care how heavy it is, within reason. No less than 14" seems reasonable
  2. Can handle a lot going on. I need to have multiple programs like MS Office (with large file sizes), Chrome (with possibly a lot of tabs), and a variety of science-related programs like ChemDraw open simultaneously.
  3. plenty of ports (HDMI, USB, USB-C, etc). My current laptop only has a broken VGA and a DisplayPort, making it extremely annoying to use for presentations.

Any advice and suggestions would be very appreciated. I don't really want to spend more than $1000 on this, but obviously don't want to buy some cheap piece of garbage that will only last a few years. My current has been hanging in there for over 10 years now

Review Is Lenovo Thinkpad E16 Gen 2 good enough for engineering?

Upvotes

16GB with upgradable slots

512 GB SSD with upgradability

Everything else looks good and I understand that it is not a workstation.

I will run student ANSYS,CAD(light work),ML (mostly on Google colab),Ltspice and do programming.

Material science+engineering and physics student.

Was wondering if I should invest in this device as its within my budget.

Laptop Request US Can you tell me which one is better?

Upvotes

Hi guys! I plan on buying a laptop for school , MS in Finance to be precise and I like to enjoy occasional light gaming like League of legends and Fall guys. I am currently deciding between these two laptops:
1. LG - gram Book 15" Laptop - Intel Core i5-1334U with 8GB Memory - 512GB SSD - Titan Silver ( I would upgrade it to 16GB of RAM)
2. Acer Aspire 16 Laptop, 16” IPS WUXGA (1920 x 1200), Intel Core Ultra 5 Processor 115U, Intel Graphics, 16GB LPDDR5X, 512GB PCIe Gen 4 SSD, Steel Gray

They are both very similarly priced , around $550 but if yall have any recommendations that fit my needs and are in that budget range feel free to let me know .

Also I do not care about touch screen, id like it to be semi portable and screen size 15-16”

Laptop Request US Laptop help (~2500$)

1 Upvotes

Hey, I am going to college soon and am looking to grab a laptop. I've
put my info below in the form, any help is appreciated

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Country
America (CA)

Budget
Up to 2500$ (A little over budget is alright)

Are you open to refurbs/used options?
Maybe

Screen size
Any (Should fit in a backpack)

Weight limit
Any

Purpose
Primarily video games and schoolwork (although I imagine any laptop
could handle schoolwork)

Form factor
Slight emphasis on physical durability, I hope for it to last quite a while.

Intended usage
Most games I play aren't graphically intensive (terraria, nuclear
throne, etc), but there are a few that are. Some graphically intensive
games I play include:

-Fighting games (Street fighter, Tekken, Guilty gear, etc)
-Counter Strike 2
-Overwatch

With "competitive" games like these I like to have a higher resolution
and frame-rate, and usually set graphical settings to medium or low to
prioritize FPS. For more casual games I still prioritize FPS over
graphics, just to a slightly lesser extent.

My current PC for instance runs CS2 at 2550x1440 (165 HZ) at
low-to-medium settings, usually somewhere between 120-300 FPS. I'm not
sure if thats achievable in my price range but it would be great if it
is.

Desired battery life
Anything, as long as its not EXTREMELY low

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the
priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

(Most) Performance, Size, Battery life, Weight (Least)

Info/Requirements
-As mentioned above, slight emphasis on physical durability
-Solidly high resolution/refresh rate
-Windows
-Good cooling system

TY for help!

Laptop Request -Others Light Gaming and Productivity

1 Upvotes

Hey, I want to buy a laptop under 50k INR for skill development in coding, web development, bioinformatics. Also, I have always been into gaming but seeing the prices rise and my immediate need of a laptop, at this point it feels i might have to give up on high level gaming :). But can these laptops run basic time pass games like Chillas Arts games, Fears to Fathom typa games and co-op games like fall guys, mecha chameleon, pacify, etc.

I knew a few like Acer Nitro V, Aspire 7 but either sold out or prices have rised (maybe because there's gonna be an independence day sale soon). Would you recommend a pc build instead? I'm a fresher life science student so idk if it's a good idea.

Laptop Request US Need a new laptop but am lost.

2 Upvotes

Hi, Im looking for a new laptop since the current one I'm using is basically lobotomized. I'm looking for (preferably) a DELL or something akin to one with at least 32GB of ram and a good bit of storage to play games and do college work on (so I'd need Microsoft Word). I would like to run things like blender/beginners 3d software for college so Im pretty sure I need something with good graphics. I'm not trying to run super big AAA games, but I'd it can run Minecraft and other smaller steam games that'd be good too.

My budget is around 1,000 USD. I was originally looking at a DELL Latitude 7440 14" (2023) Intel 13th Gen, which seemed good at first but heard it had performance issues when running things.

Sorry if this is a lot to ask for help on, I'm just sort of lost in my search so any information or recommendations would be helpful, thank you!

  3. battery life

-Ryzen only, no intel

-Preferably OLED with good colors.

-Something that wont get extremely hot or sound extremely loud, all laptops tend to get hot and a little noisy in my experience but I dont want to disturb classes or burn my legs or hands.

Laptop Request UK Need a laptop for university that can also run certain games

1 Upvotes

Hi! I know very little about laptop specs so any advice is appreciated. I need a laptop that will allow me to do my assignments and coursework but also run certain games like stardew valley or terraria (so essentially games with less detailed graphics or 2D graphics). I’m unsure if I need 16 gb of ram or only 8 gb, but 16 gb laptops are often a lot faster so a laptop that runs smoothly is something I’d quite like. I’d also like a laptop that can last me the 4 years I’ll be at uni so i understand I might need to invest in a slightly more expensive laptop. Thank you!

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
Country
Uk
Budget
Depends - see extra info, but would likely be around £400-£600
Are you open to refurbs/used options?
No
Screen size
No preference
Weight limit
No preference (but a lighter laptop would be good as I’d have to carry it around)
Purpose
University assignments like essays and PowerPoints, research, gaming on 2D games though if there is an affordable laptop that can also run games with even 3D graphics that would be appreciated, entertainment like Netflix and YouTube, general purpose
Form factor
Standard
Intended usage
Microsoft word, PowerPoint, outlook, etc, steam
Desired battery life
12-24 hours
Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life
Performance, battery, weight, battery
Info/Requirements
I’d prefer a slimmer laptop but this isn’t necessary, also for those who know about this, I am eligible for a laptop from DSA (which is why I can only buy a new one) so for now I am just wanting recommendations as the retail price won’t be what I pay. I have also never owned a laptop before

+ Linux (dual-boot or VM) as well as an external drive (or cloud storage) of a few TB where you can park class data. “ - from a faculty member
