If you truly bought it for the CUDA stuff etc. you'll probably be better off with a more normal distro anyway, since SteamOS is immutable, your installed packages that are not Flatpaks (i.e. via the Discover store) are wiped on update. And most likely you have a need for those packages that you would have to reinstall every update.

The best part of SteamOS is game mode and the last time I checked that still has issues with Nvidia. Bazzite's gamemode has the same issues.

There's like 5 forks of Gamescope that I tried on my endeavor distro. Including Valves official build, and one I got off AUR called gamescope-nvidia. And none of them worked on my 3080 in a kiosk session without either destabilizing graphical glitches, or compromises to performance.

Honestly idk what game mode is but I've been liking bazzite on my machine with a 3080. I would just not use game mode lol but maybe I'm missing out. I just use my machine as a regular desktop

You can get it to stop glitching AND be smooth by using "force composite".
I still get some heavy stutters sometimes and it freezes for multiple seconds but could also be my aging cpu and ram.

What resolution do you use? Higher than 1440p is when it gets messy from what I've heard, so maybe the stutters could be that if you're for example using Gamescope in 4K? I've never bothered trying Nvidia on game mode recently so I dunno how much it's actually improved.
I don't think your CPU and RAM could cause it. I'm using a 3600 and 32GB DDR4 in my living room but with an AMD GPU, but maybe your definition of "aging" is different from mine.

I recommend you look up what game mode is and why it isnât just big picture mode. Also look up game scope as that is the main difference.

Official support for the drivers are still hit or miss with nvidia for bazzite. I think you can get the community drivers of nvida to install for steamos but you have to use a custom i staller.

GPU drivers are in general hit or miss. I went from Nvidia which had weird issues to this that crashes my system semi-randomly https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/work_items/3067
As crazy as this might sound but Nvidia on the GTX 1080 has been a better experience for me.

I've had a pretty good experience with my 2070 on my desktop, nothing super broken, some things may need workarounds (Returnal for example requires descriptor heap forced on to perform well). I see complaints from 4000 and 5000 owners though, I don't hear much from 3000 and 2000 users.

Think they could be referring to the No Signal video that was shared recently.

Depends. If you're using CUDA for ML, then Windows is a no go. So many tools just straight up say, Windows is not supported

Same dude. I revived my wifes old 12700k build with a 5070 ti to use as a âsteam machineâ since it was literally cheaper to throw that gpu in it than buy the steam machine.
I have it boot right into steam big picture mode so it works mostly great minus a few windows quirks but i would much rather just have steam OS on it.

I just bought a powercolor 9070xt for $700 at microcenter just for steam OS. I was so hyped to experiment and try a new OS for the first time, but then depression hit like a truck and I havent even touched my new card. Ill get around to it though!

Hang in there. You made a good choice in the video card. I put mine in a Fractal Terra and it performs very well. Micro center as well.

I bought a 7900XTX for my Steam Machine about two years ago, and I never regret it. I bought a 5090 for a token Windows machine for "all those games" I wanted to play that were Windows-only due to invasive anticheats or publisher recto-cranial impaction (looking at you, Bungie and Destiny 2!) a year ago and promptly realized I don't actually want to play those much.
Nvidia drivers are still really nice in Windows, but the scenario reverses 100% when you boot a distro instead of Winslop. I have some regrets every time I boot my Arch install on the Wintendo, apply latest Nvidia drivers and system updates, then reboot and try game mode, and WELP, still got screen corruption at 4K/160Hz, still have major performance loss. Maybe someday it'll become useful again.

Just use another Linux distro brochacho. I have a steam deck and steamos is nice but it's genuinely overhyped especially if you're using it for production work it's actually worse than the average distro

I've ran Linux just fine with team green. Older card so maybe the newer cards have more issues. There could be extra steps on some distros. For a new build targeting Linux it would probably be a good idea to pick parts with known support. But like who can afford parts right now?
SteamOS might lack some support for some hardware due to it currently targeting a very limited set of hardware. Its not really a distro made for random hardware.
Really you don't need to wait for SteamOS or any gaming focused distro. If you want to use Linux you can grab most any popular distro and install Steam. You can even active Big Picture Mode and pretend it's SteamOS. If you use your computer for other things a normal distro will likely be a better experience/interface then steam big picture mode. Something like steamOS really only makes sense for a build meant to act like a console where you don't really want a desktop anymore.

I put SteamOS on my Xbox Ally and it is just perfect, no hassle and every option is two buttons away. Ever since I'm really tempted to sell the 3090 in my living room PC and get something like a 9070 xt or a used 6700 xt and switch that computer too.

anyway, AND has feature parity with everything NvidAI offers, minus RR (Redstone is technically out the door but until more devs implement it...) and ROCm needs broader adoption but it did make great strides in the last few years and I personally find AND software/features to offer a better user experience too, I just wished 20% userbase stopped being a footnote in studio's feature implementation planning and that we got the same features -preferrably the latest FSR packages instead of an older version- in a game/software at launch instead of "eventually"/never

I built my PC a few years ago, 7700x and a 7900xtx, and I am so glad I swapped to steamOS about 2 months ago. The only minor downside is that some fos online games don't play well with anticheat shenanigans but it has helped me save money not buying them lol.

NVIDIA drivers have existed on Linux for a long long time, and you have access to almost all features you mentioned. If your post did actually get removed on the NVIDIA subreddit it was deserved, it's just blatantly false.

Nvidia always seemed overrated to me. Like everyone was buying it only because everyone else was glazing it. Iâve never been the type to be so concerned about having âthe bestâ when half the time the difference was minimal. Always been team red and Iâve always been happy with it. Over here enjoying SteamOS everyday.

Forgot PCVR. AMD has had dreadful vr support, it may be a bit better now. Most of the vr community avoids AMD like the plague.

Iirc, Nvidia has implemented the fix on the driver side for a lot of its issues (DX12 performance,) but theyâre still waiting on the Vulkan translation layer to implement and finish testing their side of the fix.
But yah, itâs taking way too long. Their fix for it was done in Jan/Feb. itâs why I went with a 9070XT.

I was forced to get an nvidia card due to school/work requirements but got myself a second hand rx 6800XT for 200$ a couple months back. Im using Bazzite on the PC and there is always a slightly worse knockoff of everything nvidia has made on linux/amd. Some are even better, I use nvidia broadcast on my main pc and its way worse compared to EasyEffects on linux.

I bought nvidia because the numbers make more sense to me. AMD cards have always confused the fuck out of me.

The naming convention is the same as nvida though. First number is the gen, following numbers are the tier, and sometimes an extra "XT/XTX/GRE which is the AMD equivalent to "TI/Super"
