EDIT: Shortly before posting this, I also sought some insight into Frame alterntatives here. Might add some context into why the Frame's promo video was more for me than the actual product might be?
-------------------------
So I was PSYCHED when I saw the Frame preview video. I'd been curious about VR for ages, but didn't want to go the full 'hobbyist' or early-adopter route.
Before VALVE's hardware announcement from STEAM, I vaguely knew about Meta Quest and Occulus, so I was anticipating any VR would require a bunch of chords, moving around in my room getting tangled and falling into things (I'd seen plenty of videos of people crashing into their TV's), and needing space to dedicate to VR that I didn't have.
It was actually the AR stuff that got me really excited, including when the hype video had some folks playing their 2d steam games on a projected screen (in full color mind you).
Last week, I'd had enough of the maybe tomorrow memes (or rather, the environment producing them - keep'em coming folks, they're good for a laugh), and started looking at what else is out there and how it would compare to the Frame and (what I've since learned is) it's foveated streaming and the other functions it's going to be offering.
That gave me enough time to learn that boy was the hype video...hyped (it'll actually be greyscale AR, not full color like the hype video), that Galaxy might be a bit pricier but offers a full AR experience for the additional expense, and that there's some Project Swan headset that might blow both out of the water at a pricepoint in the middle of Frame and the XR, or even lower than Frame.
All that is to say that VALVE really blew it here, but at least I'm coming out on top.... If they'd announced a date for signups for the FRAME lotto-to-purchase - even if it was in September - I don't know how much digging I would've done. All the poor communication, or lack thereof though? It led me to talk myself out of the Frame at this point (I'm basically deciding on diving into the XR or waiting for whatever Project Swan ends up getting called).
If you're still psyched for Frame, I don't blame you. The AR stuff is equally important to me as gaming (a virtual desktop so I can work 'on a bigscreen' anywhere in my home will be great), so I might be a unique case, but just kind of wondering if anyone else has had a similar journey specifically because of the poor public messaging / comms strategy out of Valve regarding FRAME?
But look.... maybe none of it matters because clearly IT'S TOMORROW.
