Discussion Just got a 1tb oled deck....any tips?

Upvotes

Id love a basic rundown of some cool features. Yes I am aware of Google, but it just pops up a million different things. How do I know when to dl from the desktop mode or steam? What games suck but are verified? Seems everyones pissed about Halo Campaign and I was pumped. Whats useful to know when you have only made menus, prep lists, schedules and job applications on a laptop the last 20 or so years?

Important to note... I am 41 and have been on only consoles for 24 or so years so anything outside of pulling up duke nukem, oregon trail, or the original gta I am going to be an idiot at. Feel free to speak like I got off the short bus or actively yell at young kids for being emo and lazy.

Thanks for any help!

Discussion Valve Suggestion: SteamDeck Verified Score 0-10

Upvotes

I think it would be way better of the Verified rating was a scale, with zero being unplayable, and 10 being it performs perfectly (solid 60fps on max settings).

The 10s would be achieved with games like Hollow Knight, Hades, etc. While recent FPS games would score lower. But it would be nice to look at a game and say to yourself "Ehh, I don't want to deal with playing a game that's only rated a 4" knowing it will run at 15-20 fps.

Tech Support Steam Deck stutter opening/closing overlay/menus while streaming GeForce Now

Upvotes

Hello to any SteamDeck Linux cool people,

Every time I open or close the Quick Access Menu, Steam menu, or the side and radial menus while streaming through the native GeForce Now app, I get a hard stutter/lag/frame time spike. It only happens right at the moment of opening or closing, while the menu is actually up there's no stutter at all. Tried stable and beta channels to no avail.

If I'm thinkin proper, GFN is just a video stream and the Deck isn't rendering anything itself, this points to Gamescope switching from direct scan out to a composited path whenever an overlay needs to show, and that switch is what's causing the hitch.

It'd be great if there was a toggle to force it to stay composited all the time, a bit more latency in exchange for no stutter.

I could be talking out of my booty hole so please excuse me if it doesn't make sense.

Any update on this would help.

My thanks

Shannly

Tech Support Is it possible to play a multiplayer game with another Steam Deck without an internet connection?

Upvotes

I'm going to be camping this weekend with a friend who has a Steam Deck. I thought it could be fun to play something over wireless LAN, if possible. We won't have Starlink or anything like that. Is it possible to play games on multiplayer while off the grid like this?

Tech Support Mouse and Keyboard controls on SteamDeck for Warhammer 40000: Rogue Trader

Upvotes

Hi there,

recently got me the game and wanted to play it on my docked SteamDeck (hooked to kb&m & 1080p monitor, desktop mode). Now when I launched the game, all the controls where for console inputs and I couldn't find an option in the settings to switch from controller to kb&m. Has anyone made a similar experience or knows how I can change the input to kb&m?

Thanks.

Question Games with Larger Text for Aging Eyes

So as an aging gamer in my 50s, it's getting harder and harder to read text even with my reading glasses and using the magnification tool. Games like Stardew Valley and Persona 4 Golden are perfect, while games like Terraria, Hades, and Civ 6 are too tiny to read. I like most genres of games, but I'm specifically talking about games that use a lot of text like RPGs, strategies, and the like. Does anyone else struggle with this, or know of a database or resource that tracks text/UI legibility on Deck?

Article Halo: Campaign Evolved Is Rough on the Steam Deck And Shouldn't Be Verified - SteamDeckHQ

Halo: Campaign Evolved is now out on Steam in early access, and we tested it out using the completed game save we had from our review period.

It's rough. It can run decently well in closed spaces, but it starts to really slow down in open levels like The Silent Cartographer and later parts of the Halo level. There will be drops below 30 FPS no matter what, and that's after we have adjusted the resolution scale below the default settings.

It definitely shouldn't be Verified.

Discussion Steam Deck - My Heatwave Saviour

I have a pretty beefy main PC rig that uses around 500w when gaming and about 70w idle, I game in a small room and during the recent EU heatwave, turning on my PC is juts out of the option as it acts as a space heater.

Has anyone else swapped to their docked Deck as their full time desktop replacement in this unreal heat? It really has been such a saviour for me! Wonering if anyone else has had the same idea?

Tech Support Something big loose on left side of LCD?

I recently picked up a 64gb LCD refurb directly from Valve. Mostly keep it on my desk and have never dropped the system. Stock system but an added SD card.

Last night when I grabbed it it felt like something was loose inside. If I do a small shake (think like a gentle fishing cast motion) something is absolutely rattling on the left side that's hitting the volume button area from the inside. Triggers, buttons, etc all seem fine and the thing moving seems bigger / maybe goes about halfway down the deck. Definitely not just a small loose screw which is what most search results pointed to. Almost like the entire board is loose?

If I gently squeeze the left part of the touch screen the shaking seems to stop.

Is this normal at all? If not, any idea what's going on or is this something I'd send in and let them figure it out?

Tech Support Help! Whats wrong with the original Dock or SD?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have the original Steam Dock and after 1 year it still has this weird bug. I was waiting for an update but the fix never came.

After a lot of testing I noticed that this issue is more likely to happen when the battery is below 35%.

Is there any workaround / fix?

Im unsure of how to fix this. Tried turning off all my mods which did nothing. I updated decky and steam but it seemingly doesn't do anything. Anyone have any idea what may be causing this?

Tech Support Emulated games no longer register Steam Deck/Controller back buttons in desktop mode

Since the last update, thread title is occurring for me. I used to have the escape key mapped to L4 so I could quickly bring up the Duckstation menu for example while playing games in desktop mode. However, since the update, I guess something changed with Steam Input and I now have to hold the start button to switch between desktop/controller Steam Input configs. The back buttons are now not mappable at all, even when I try inputs that aren't keyboard centric (tried mapping L4 to the X button in a PS1 game and nothing registers at all).

What's the workaround for this? I tried deleting the whole desktop Steam Input altogether but that didn't work. Worth mentioning that Steam games work fine, but everything emulated no longer registers my back buttons in desktop mode. Gaming mode works fine, however.

Question Anyone play Marvel Rivals on deck and can share settings?

I can easily play games like Overwatch, DBD, Diablo, etc on the deck without really having to tweak settings but Marvel Rivals is downright unplayable. A friend and I even used chat gpt to try to tweak it and I think it actually made it worse.
The issue is mostly that the game will load really nicely but as soon as I try to play a match, the graphics are so bad - very fuzzy and just a visual headache and the game itself lags despite being on my home wifi network.
If any of you have found a fix that works can you share?
Thanks!

Promotional Bloodborne installer for SteamDeck and SteamOS

Ive been working on an all in one install wrapper for BloodBorne so my dad can play on his SteamDeck without the hassle of jumping through the setup hoops we have all come to know. it will automate the emulator install, patching, controller config, mods, integrates into Steam Big Picture with art, and offers quick profile switching between vanilla and DeckBorne profiles. An installer for folks who just want to play BB without the hoops to jump through for install. Full transparency, I leveraged AI to help me build this. However as a result of that choice, I feel like this tool should be in the hands of the communities who would enjoy it.

https://github.com/JimminyRiggit/DeckBorne

Im wondering if anyone here happens to have a little free time, you wouldnt mind trying out DeckBorne and providing feedback or suggestions for any settings.

game files not provided, bring your own files. deckborne does not ship with mods, patches, or game files to avoid issues with bundling. Changing flair from Question to Discussion as my first post was auto removed.

Edited because I assume most folks may actually have a SteamOS device here

Tech Support Broken L1 Button

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My Deck recently fell off the couch and landed just right so as to make the L1 a little finicky. It registers but only if pressed towards the inside edge of the button and the outside of the button is a wash. I'm trying to decide if I try fixing it myself with an IFix It guide, or send it to Steam Support. I've never cracked into it before so I'm mostly just wondering if anyone else has done this, or a similar repair and how approachable it is for a relative newcomer. My only previous experience with this type of thing was doing an 8BitDo NGC conversion kit.

Tech Support Thought I would try remote play for BF6. Anyone have an issue with constantly shooting?

Remote play is a beautiful thing. I am blessed with 2.5 gig internet at work so lunches are full of either indie games natively or if I fancy it, streams from my PC for games that might need a little more power.

I thought I would try BF6, and it works, the only thing that seems to be happening is that it constantly shoots my weapon. The trigger button doesn't seem to be causing issues as when not in the game, and in the menus, it works perfectly fine, even on other games that use it as a trigger.

I did notice that it would switch button layouts to keyboard when it does it, could there be some interference with the touch screen? Can I turn it off for remote play?

If I can't play it, that's not a major issue, as its not why I bought the steam deck, but I was wondering if anyone else had the same issue
