Fluff How many of you are true Day 1?
Steam launched on September 12th, 2003. How many of you are real Day 1 OGs?
My Steam username will forever be an old ISP email address that I haven’t had access to since 2007.

What a random date, I wonder if a specific game came out that day or something

Only halflife was on steam back then, I think halflife 2 came later that year. it might have something to do with the won-servers going down, but other than that, I have no clue.

Counter Strike: Condition Zero launched in March of 2004; maybe?

u/aaronstone 2d ago
what, so you can respend all that money on your library but with todays prices?
21 year acct here, fuck that!

u/Expensive_Host_9181 1d ago
You'd consider your steam library to be worth more than 21 years of life?

Try and go to steam going like "hey i have a account which's password i forgot 22 years ago. Can i reset it?"
5
u/SyberWolf https://steam.pm/3dpqm 2d ago
the only thing on the account was cs1.6 and half life. not a big loss.

Same. Lost my first account.

i actually had this 2004 account stolen from me by a scammer (me being young and naive), lucky enough i still had my cdkeys and e-mail i used as proof for steam support to revert the e-mail and password. if you had the same thing happen, try to find your cd keys and contact steam they can track the account that way.

The olds are having nostalgia and possibly an existential crisis, let them have their moment 🤣 i’m only at 14 years of service, going on 15

I haven't even hit 14 yet, I didn't know about steam until halfway through high school. I mostly played console. The extent of my PC gaming was shockwave, a Lego MMO, a cartoon network MMO, a few browser RPG games and whatever I got on disk which was Harry Potter the chamber of secrets, a bunch of Disney games, hot wheels, and NASCAR racers (not a turn left in an oval game) and of course UB Funkeys.

It's crazy to me that i am just 23 and someone got a 22 year old account on Steam

u/hikikomorisama 3d ago
Trust me, in 40 years you'll be online reading the same comment that you just made about some service you both utilize.

u/h0td0gmilk 2d ago

It’s funny remembering “oh don’t worry you’ll feel even older later” comments in my mid twenties, and now in my thirties I’m like dear god please don’t remind me how insanely fast this shit is moving

u/Best_Pants 2d ago
Its crazy to me that there are now adult steam users who have never played a PC game from a CD or DVD.

u/Skalywag_76 2d ago
Best thing valve did was make steam libraries really feel like a lifelong collection you can always go back to. No matter how much hardware you go through.

My uncle gifted me his account when I was a teenager after his wife made him give up video games to save their marriage (ikr?). The account name is still just a portmanteau of his name and his wife's name and the date is December 2, 2004. At the time all he had on there were military games like the really early CoD and the Half Life series, some stuff like Day of Defeat and Attack on Pearl Harbor.
I've had it longer than he did at this point so technically 21 year club but still, old enough.

That is pretty cool. I wonder how many will gift their accounts to their children to have it live on.

Seeing steam being such a great company, stuck as an angel inbetween capitalism I would argue that at some point we might see 23 year olds having accounts with the age 50 or something xd

Well "Mitglied seit dem 23. Oktober 2004." - I think I got a code card for halflife 2 with my graphics card (some years before the release) and found it again :-)

i was literally given birth to this world after 2 weeks from that day; so no, don't think i would be considered a true Day 1 user.

This might sound OG, but I was simply a PC gamer long before the existence and there is no tracking 😂. The year was 1997. Command and Conquer Red Alert 🫡

Same here it installed with my boxed copy of half life 2. And I absolutely hated that a game was installing this extra software to my system and using up valuable resources.

I’m too young for this thread; I started in 2016 lol. I bet it would have been really cool to start in 2003 though, I’m jealous. (Upset that my parents didn’t sign me up for an account as a baby, smh)

I was part of the anti Steam movement when they started.
I can't actually remember what we were upset about.

When I first saw steam I thought it would fail tbh. I wanted the game box, instructions and everything else that came with a game.
I wouldn't have guessed steam would have the best deals on games.
I was a quake 3 gamer and had no use for it. Played quake until WoW came out.
I didn't get steam for the same reason I didn't try Bitcoin. I thought I was going to get scammed.
Now steam is one of the last efforts to save gaming from greedy corporations. Funny how things work.
18 years on steam.

My parents weren't even married then, so I'm a bit disadvantaged but if I had been alive then i would've been one.
