Fluff How many of you are true Day 1?

Post image

Steam launched on September 12th, 2003. How many of you are real Day 1 OGs?

My Steam username will forever be an old ISP email address that I haven’t had access to since 2007.

Bro signed up before GabeN even thought about starting steam

133

u/Cocoatrice 2d ago

And who is 1 and 2? Gaben and his wife/son? (Does he even have family?)

206

u/dTrecii I did a 100% Glitchless Speedrun of Walking Simulator 2d ago

No Gabe Newell is the successful test subject in a long list of failed experiments. He was a bit of a rush job so they weren’t able to teach him some things, one of which was the number 3

2

u/curious_corn 1d ago

That’s a nod to The Matrix isn’t it?

44

u/21Black_Mamba21 2d ago

If you’re being serious, then yes, Gabe does have a family.

Bro got into Steam before Steam got into Steam

My buddy sent me a message just after Midnight when it went live to the public. Steam ID is 4 digits.

130

u/shrockitlikeitshot 2d ago

I've heard different theories on how steamids generated that morning but I was in the same time zone when it happened.

I pulled an all nighter and was literally on when it switched over, giving me a 3XXX steam ID. Just for reference for people that don't know, valve developers are 01, 02, 03 and so forth.

56

u/CopyNPaste247 2d ago

Sad story—my Steam login was tied to an email address I no longer used. I ended up taking about a six-year break from gaming because of kids, getting married, and buying a house.

When I finally came back, I built a top-of-the-line gaming PC. Long story short, I had Steam update my login email, but somehow it generated a new Steam ID for me. I used to have a short 3xxx Steam ID, and now it’s 17 characters long. :(

12

u/DragonliFargo 2d ago

I also lost my short ID due to changing e-mails. In my case, I was active but had to change e-mails because I was using my work e-mail.

u/pdub02 1d ago

i believe some counterstrike players got early access to steam.
Mine says September 11, 2003

Shit, didn't realize I was such a nerd back then

23

u/aldorn 2d ago

You're still here! 😆

2

u/ElektroBenny 1d ago

hab nur ein halbes Jahr später.. weil ich einfach bei 1.6 länger bleiben wollten und Steam ein wenig boykottiert hatte ^^

13

u/RustyOP 2d ago

22 years and still no Half Life 3 release

5

u/FamilyRootsQuest 2d ago

Oof. I wasn't even 3 years old yet.

3

u/Redjackal26 2d ago

I wasn’t even 1 yet…
My steam account is 18 years old thanks to taking over my dad’s when he stopped playing as much.

5

u/4estGimp 3d ago

Several TFC clanmates an I spent hours on mIRC waiting for somebody to announce, IT'S LIVE.

LEL, you steam account is exactly as old as mine xD

37

u/SlothOcelot 2d ago

Hey there Fam!!

9

u/JaysonTatecum 2d ago

What a random date, I wonder if a specific game came out that day or something

8

u/ank-myrandor + 2d ago

Only halflife was on steam back then, I think halflife 2 came later that year. it might have something to do with the won-servers going down, but other than that, I have no clue.

3

u/SlothOcelot 2d ago

Counter Strike: Condition Zero launched in March of 2004; maybe?

2

u/ank-myrandor + 2d ago

Owh could be, I did play cs back in those days.

Would trade my account age to be younger any day lol

27

u/aaronstone 2d ago

what, so you can respend all that money on your library but with todays prices?

21 year acct here, fuck that!

3

u/Expensive_Host_9181 1d ago

You'd consider your steam library to be worth more than 21 years of life?

2

u/girthynoodlez 19h ago

His steam library is 21 years of life.

8

u/Clean-Text2782 2d ago

I'm 21 and my oldest account is eleven years old, almost twelve.

i had a day one 2003 account, but forgot the login so i made a new one in 2004.

44

u/BigDog_Nick 3d ago

Just replied above but we are both April buddies!

21

u/Depoka_YT 3d ago

Try and go to steam going like "hey i have a account which's password i forgot 22 years ago. Can i reset it?"

5

u/SyberWolf https://steam.pm/3dpqm 2d ago

the only thing on the account was cs1.6 and half life. not a big loss.

8

u/PanBijo1 2d ago

Could probably sell for some money though

2

u/web_knows 3d ago

Same. Lost my first account.

6

u/SyberWolf https://steam.pm/3dpqm 2d ago

i actually had this 2004 account stolen from me by a scammer (me being young and naive), lucky enough i still had my cdkeys and e-mail i used as proof for steam support to revert the e-mail and password. if you had the same thing happen, try to find your cd keys and contact steam they can track the account that way.

2

u/oimatewtf__ 2d ago

Hi April brother! My account is a day younger

2

u/SyberWolf https://steam.pm/3dpqm 2d ago

The olds are having nostalgia and possibly an existential crisis, let them have their moment 🤣 i’m only at 14 years of service, going on 15

26

u/TomatoSlayer 2d ago

Half-Life crisis

3

u/Initial_Ad5279 2d ago

I haven't even hit 14 yet, I didn't know about steam until halfway through high school. I mostly played console. The extent of my PC gaming was shockwave, a Lego MMO, a cartoon network MMO, a few browser RPG games and whatever I got on disk which was Harry Potter the chamber of secrets, a bunch of Disney games, hot wheels, and NASCAR racers (not a turn left in an oval game) and of course UB Funkeys.

14

u/moonlord2193 2d ago

At least you existed

6

u/Oramaro 2d ago

I was only 7 when steam came out. Not sure how I found steam, but I’m glad I did lol

3

u/Thebiggestjhar 2d ago

I was using Xfire at the time and remember thinking Steam was dumb. lol

It's crazy to me that i am just 23 and someone got a 22 year old account on Steam

57

u/hikikomorisama 3d ago

Trust me, in 40 years you'll be online reading the same comment that you just made about some service you both utilize.

16

u/h0td0gmilk 2d ago

I'm 30 and ive hated watching this happen to me.. seeing that I was 7 when steam was released is the first time in forever i dont feel old 💀 i dont think I'll get many more of these lol

7

u/thatsthegoodjuice 2d ago

It’s funny remembering “oh don’t worry you’ll feel even older later” comments in my mid twenties, and now in my thirties I’m like dear god please don’t remind me how insanely fast this shit is moving

8

u/Best_Pants 2d ago

Its crazy to me that there are now adult steam users who have never played a PC game from a CD or DVD.

5

u/Skalywag_76 2d ago

Best thing valve did was make steam libraries really feel like a lifelong collection you can always go back to. No matter how much hardware you go through.

56

u/sXySakura1 3d ago

I only made an account because Left 4 Dead 2 was given away for free by Valve.

39

u/Shikiyomi_Kyouya 2d ago

(Sorry the image is in Japanese)
I created my account in July 2014. My wife introduced me to Steam, and I created an account the month after we got married.
So, my Steam age also corresponds to the number of years I've been married to her :D

7

u/WolfsmaulVibes 2d ago

congratulations!

3

u/Shikiyomi_Kyouya 2d ago

Thank you!

14

u/vorpal-mortal 3d ago

My uncle gifted me his account when I was a teenager after his wife made him give up video games to save their marriage (ikr?). The account name is still just a portmanteau of his name and his wife's name and the date is December 2, 2004. At the time all he had on there were military games like the really early CoD and the Half Life series, some stuff like Day of Defeat and Attack on Pearl Harbor.

I've had it longer than he did at this point so technically 21 year club but still, old enough.

22

u/Mlcjohnson16 3d ago

I think I'm day 4 lol...

4

u/Karabulut1243 3d ago

5

5

u/OriginalDoskii 2d ago

That is pretty cool. I wonder how many will gift their accounts to their children to have it live on.

3

u/FayDaGay 17 Years Of Service 2d ago

Seeing steam being such a great company, stuck as an angel inbetween capitalism I would argue that at some point we might see 23 year olds having accounts with the age 50 or something xd

3

u/Nheea 2d ago

Husband plans to give his to ours. I don't know what to do with mine then.

1

u/Pepperminteapls 3d ago

When I first saw steam I thought it would fail tbh. I wanted the game box, instructions and everything else that came with a game.

I wouldn't have guessed steam would have the best deals on games.

I was a quake 3 gamer and had no use for it. Played quake until WoW came out.

I didn't get steam for the same reason I didn't try Bitcoin. I thought I was going to get scammed.

Now steam is one of the last efforts to save gaming from greedy corporations. Funny how things work.

18 years on steam.
