It felt clunky and rough even at the time

Just avoid combat where you can. Sprint past enemies. Turning difficulty down also means less combat. The real thrust of most of the experience happens in dialogue and exploration. It's more like an adventure game that is wearing a real-time with pause game's skin.

I first played it 17 years ago, and the barrier for entry felt immense even back then. It just isn't really designed to do what it's trying to do.

Alternatively, play Disco Elysium. It is the first game that has a Planescape: Torment feel that isn't just a poor imitation. It's honestly a superior overall experience, in my opinion. It's far more rooted in the human condition and everyday experiences.

I like rpg combat instead, but the game feels... overwhelming? I feel like I can lose track of what I'm doing and where I'm going too easily. Is there some sort of checklist of important or missable stuff? Especially spells and magic items since I want to play a mage.

I have been looking for something like that but I haven't exactly found it, I have tried multiple times getting into it but always bounced. I feel like I could miss out on important quests and rewards if I don't dig through the dialogue of every npc I find. Or pick the wrong answer, or fail a check.

Disco Elysium, brother (or sister). Zero combat, and you're meant to fail checks and miss stuff. You play as a pretty pathetic person and you either build him up to be an incredible detective, or he continues his current life full of vices. Or both, actually. Or neither. It also has some genuinely hilarious moments, I laughed out loud sooo much throughout my playthrough.

But it's also pretty depressing at times, made me tear up just as often I think. It truly is a beautiful game with literally no wrong way to play it.

Disco Elysium is a game where either you love it or you don't there's no middle ground.

There's a lot of philosophy and politics in the narrative, a lot of world building, it's very moody and atmospheric, and has really well written characters.

You play a detective trying to solve a murder. But you're an extremely depressed detective in a broken down city that doesn't care for the cops and is on the verge of literal class warfare.

Through the course of the game based on your decisions you'll build up the kind of character you are and learn about what drove you to depression and alcoholism and drug abuse and why you woke up in a dirty hotel room with your necktie on the ceiling fan and why people don't like you, because you can't remember anything.

You'll also solve a murder. And maybe, just maybe, learn about some local cryptids.

Also if you level up Inland Empire your ugly necktie talks to you. A lot.

It is very reading heavy so if you don't want to sit there and listen to a very well voice acted game with little action going on, you should skip it.

But if any of that intrigues you, you should absolutely play it and see for yourself.

Ways I've gotten a game over that I can remember:

Died of a heart attack trying to get my necktie down from the ceiling fan

Died from sitting on a very uncomfortable chair Got picked up by the moralist cabal living in the sky because I told them about a social anomaly.

Killed myself by bluffing about killing myself way too hard.

Pretty sure technically died of embarrassment because my morale got too low.

I hope stuff like the Gothic remake will revive that kind of world design. It is infinitely more rewarding than any difficulty setting that simply pumps up HP and damage numbers. It also creates better level design because every asset placement suddenly becomes a lot more meaningful when it needs to help you navigate the game world, instead of following magical GPS devices.

signalis is one of those games that left a PROFUND impact on me. i’d always been most into the RE style of survival horror, and signalis took that and twisted and bent the bars of the genre’s cage until it became a work of baroque art.

the narrative is paced so well. the characters are given so much room to exist and yet dialogue takes a back seat most of the time; the imagery and rhetoric are both strong enough together that even with the confusing dreamlike nature of the overall adventure, jt ends up feeling so coherent and intentional and *right.*

signalis reinvigorated my belief in video games as an interactive art medium. it is, without question, one of the most deeply and horrifyingly beautiful experiences i’ve ever had.

SMT in general. The worlds they make are so well thought out. I started with Persona because the modern setting was obviously appealing, but when you play the other SMT games you realize how good they are at making their settings. Even the dark and eerie games are incredibly compelling.
