Fluff Feels like every year has been going more and more into this
Oh well
Edit: Im not against old games, quite opposite - I love most of them.
I just own them already.. and waiting 14 years for game to go -90% is bit "eh?" (not to mention -60% for 10 year old game)

I know that for me it feels like this because i already got all the good games like 10 years ago in those sales.
So now they dont pop up for me anymore and it feels like the sales are worse

Yeah everyone's first couple sales feel amazing when you haven't gotten the Valve complete pack yet, or the Batman Arkham Collection, or the Mass Effect trilogy, etc
How many times every sale do I see this conversation:
"No good sales this year"
"What about [a bunch of classics that are 80% off or greater]"
"I already have those"
76
u/Serdones 26d ago
The trick is to remember other complete packs you haven't bought yet. Like I got Max Payne today. Surprised I'd never thought to buy it before.
Think there's also an issue where game development has slowed down in general to where there aren't like three-game series spanning just one or two generations that'd naturally be super cheap to sell today in a complete pack.
Nowadays you're lucky to have a triple-A studio pump out more than one game in a generation.

Completely disagree. Back in the day you'd have entir publisher catalogs for like $20 where you'd get an entire publishers back catalog.
Games that were 3 years old were 60-80% off.
Also games were $30-40 back then, so the discounts dropped them way down.
Now a $70 game with 20% off isn't a sale. I mean. I know it technically is. But it's not enticing enough when you've grown up on sub $20 top tier games.
37
u/TheSpecialApple 26d ago
my favourite is when the base game doesnt go on sale but the deluxe edition goes on sale, but just enough of a sale to still be more $ than the base. yeah its a sale, but thats a pretty mediocre discount to see
12
u/TadLessSkinny 26d ago
Borderlands 4 looking right at you! And then they're selling $168 in DLC. The game isn't even a year old yet...

Yeah i think a lot of people here havent seen just how good it was back when they had the daily deals and 8 hour flash sales. You were checking back 3 times a day and it was a whole experience.
Now i just skim through my wishlist, maybe get one indie game and thats it

u/HistoricalFunion 26d ago
That’s exactly it. Once your library hits a certain size, the Steam sales aren't actually worse—your backlog is just full of all the heavy hitters you bought for pennies five years ago.

I sorta disagree somewhat. Sure your first few sales are the ones you buy the most. But from my point of view I did that in 2014. I stopped purchasing in bulk around 2017. But I still add tuns of games to my wishlist, and games that are even 5 years old on my wishlist aren't getting discounted to low prices. Alsmot none of my vr wishlist is on sale at all. Why is cuphead still above like $10? Shovelknight collection above $25? Im sorta wanting my wishlist to go actually on sale after sitting for 5 years but so many just dont now.
49
u/CustomerSuportPlease 27d ago
VR isn't going to go on sale because there aren't new VR games releasing to diminish demand for the old games.
Indie games like Cuphead aren't going to go on sale because they don't really age unlike older FPS games. The downside to getting so many really mechanically good and graphically stylized games is that they just don't appear to age. When I was growing up, I could look at Morrowind and Skyrim and see that one was just clearly graphically better than the other because they were both striving for realism. If you aren't striving for realism, then there is no obvious point of comparison.
42
u/Serdones 26d ago edited 26d ago
I think something like Cuphead also commands a "premium" by being a critical darling and having name recognition. Plus, when its starting price is $20, it's not like $13 on sale is that steep.
→ More replies (1)3

My wishlist items never seem to get a permanent price reduction, which is what annoys me. TimeShift came out in 2007 for example and it's still sitting at $19.99 full price on Steam. When it does go on sale, it's down to $9.99. Call me a cheap bastard, but I'll wait until it's like 5 bucks or just never play it again.

I almost feel like companies saw that people would wait a year or two for game prices to come down, decided fuck that and tons just decided to do the Nintendo model of keeping everything at the same price forever lol
25
u/RMAPOS 26d ago edited 26d ago
we've been sabotaging ourselves with public wishlists :(
But here is a funny psychology: If I'm not willing to spend 60$ on a new game, I'm twice as unwilling to spend 60$ on a 2 year old game, even if I realize that a proper sale is being dragged out.
People aren't waiting for these sales because they want to scam the devs, they wait for sales because that's an acceptable price point to them. People who have the money will rarely wait two years for an anticipated game. Likewise, people who don't have the money will not suddenly start spending four times their budget on a game just because it doesn't go on deep sale.
→ More replies (1)8
u/Liawuffeh 26d ago

u/The_Void_Reaver 26d ago
Definitely. Especially now that big name games are being released on a 6-7 year cycle instead of a 2-3 year one. There's just not as much critically acclaimed stuff coming out as often. There's a few indie darlings a year, but the flow of high quality games has slowed. Ultimately that's going to lead to companies extending how long they're able to capitalize on being the new hot thing.
Hell for a game like cuphead there's really not anything like it to have usurped it's place.

u/ABHOR_pod 26d ago
Honestly I don't think it's just that.
I think since there's no more physical marketplace and a need to move copies that are sitting on shelves, companies have no real incentive to lower prices over time anymore. e.g. Far Cry 5 and Half Life Alyx are both still $60 retail. Those games are 8 and 6 years old, respectively.
So even when they go like 50% off they still cost more than many of this year's best selling indie games.
Instead of lowering prices, studios are doing the old "Disney Vault" bullshit and using FOMO tactics: "This is your only time to get this game for less than $60! hurry up and buy it now! Don't wait!" Like, fuck off. you better put that shit at 75% off to get me to even think about it.

This. Its survivor bias in action. All the good deals have already been added to your account. Bethesda games consistently go on sale for super cheap and still do... But I already own them so I dont see it in my feed anymore. The only remaining games that are interesting to me are the ones that haven't gone on steep discount yet.

u/OrangeJuiceLuvr69 26d ago
No its not for starters games used to go on DEEP discounts when companies didnt give a fuck about PC. Not only that but games dont even get down as much as they used to. You could get the whole yakuza kiryu series for like 30$, now its like 70. Same with darksouls it used to routinely go on sale for like 10-20 now youre lucky if it even goes on sale.

u/Quixotic_Seal 26d ago
“We already have all the big discounted games” doesn’t make any sense though. Every year a new batch of games get older, and experiences less demand, and so should see steeper sales than in the past.
This is like saying you’ve already seen all the good movies, so you won’t notice when new ones hit streaming or become affordable to buy/rent.
It’s nonsense.

Yeah because the publishers set the sale price. The summer sale is a quantity of sales event a not quality event.
112
u/LatkeShark 26d ago
Now, at least. It used to be both. Back in like 2010-2012 the sales were batshit insane, one year they had crazy packs of multiplayer games you could buy. I remember buying like 10 copies of Terraria for $5 or something stupid like that to gift to everybody I knew. The sales have 100% been getting less interesting over the last decade.
27
u/TheSpoonyCroy 26d ago edited 26d ago
Multiple factors to it really
Refunds make flash* deals no longer a viable thing. It will only lead to problems and angry since even if they decide to make them exempt from price adjustments will still lead an abundance of support tickets on why their case is special.
The simple hard truth, big sales massive sales are simply just bad business because you are undervaluing your game and people will just wait for your game to drop down to that value again. This isn't to say some games shouldn't decrease in price over time since it is absurd that any of the cod games are still 60-80 dollars after years to decades of being released but we all know its a trend for a newly released game to go on sale for 20-30% off after a few months of release. So people wait for that, it sucks but they were eating away sales due to patient gamers. So you set a bar and don't move much past it so people either accept they will have to pay _ or they won't get it all (or pirate it). Its also a big reason why we don't see many great bundles anymore like the hayday for humble bundles since they don't really provide much to the devs/publisher besides their games getting sold on greymarkets.
3
u/Lison52 26d ago
Basically why Factorio dev announced that he's never going to place a discount on his game
3
u/Yogsulate https://s.team/p/jhjg-fjh 26d ago edited 26d ago
And I respect it.
Don't have to wait and guess on sales, which then doesn't have to be factored into the base price.
It's going to be valued at what I paid, no matter when I pay.
Probably also helps that Factorio is fucking awesome.

I understand missing the excitement of a steam sale, but still we really want to go back to having to wait for the next steam sale before buying the game we want as opposed to just waiting the next weekly sale that fits it's category/publisher/release year/whatever the current sale is themed around. Yeah I think it really happened with the "death" of physical media. You used to be able to pick up almost any game (aside from Nintendo games) used on console for like 5 dollars a year after they released, this was especially true in my experience with PS4 games. That kind of forced publishers to compete with the used market and make new games cheap digitally during big sale events, even on PC. Now that digital sales make up 80-90% of sales on consoles, publishers no longer need to compete with the used games market, and can just price things however they want.

u/ImaginaryRea1ity 27d ago

Thing is, after said 3-4 years its highly likely its been part of things like Humble Bundle, Humble Choice, (legit) 3rd party seller's better "super sales" or "free" on.. competing launcher. I think both things are happening:
- I got all of the amazing deals that I wanted years ago
- new games are priced higher and getting worse sales and the base prices aren't going down after a year or two like they used to.
examples on my wishlist:
- nier automata is from 2016 and still $15 on sale. That should be under $10 by now by historical standards.
- BG3 is base price $70 and only has a 25% sale and it's the lowest it's ever been after 3 years.

I was one of the games backers, and personally I do not actually agree with that statement and would rather more people be able to enjoy the game... But I figured this was worth relaying because otherwise your going to be waiting for a very long time...
FWIW: 5824.6 hours says the thing is very much worth the price...

Yeah, I mean I understand not wanting to discount things but it's insulting to pretend that's "for the fans" instead of being about getting more money.

I felt the same way about gtav, waited and waited for it to go super low, and just never ended up buying it because it never did. That is until literally 3 weeks ago when it finally hit rock bottom. Patient gamer. I have rimeorld on my wishlist too and have noticed that it hasnt gone very low. I'll probably never end up buying it due to that. Not that I can't afford it; more just I don't like spending on a game I'm not confident I'll like, and I don't have a lot of spare time anyway. But, a killer deal can tip the scales just enough.

Wish the dlc would go on sale for less. I want it but really hate buying any dlc that's more than a tenner. I'm sure it's worth it and full of content but I'm a cheap man.

Fyi, for anyone interested: I compared the sale on gog vs. steam, and the same 4 games are about $25 cheaper on gog. Total cost: $50 vs $75.
Obviously they don't have the same catalog, so some games are just not on gog, but it's worth a look, as that $25 difference is pretty significant

And that's probably mostly only to make sure you get notified. You'll get a notification when games on wishlist is discounted 20 % or more. That's probably the highest discount they're willing to make.
For whatever reason.

the 90% discounts are there, but it's on the shitty shovelware where it's 90% off most of the time.

for a lot of games the sales price feels like the real price.
for companies that refuse to mark down their game ever i have a very simple response. you will never get my money. fuck you.

Yep, I know of zero games living up to the meme of 90-95% discount 1 year after release with "all bugs fixed and multiple DLCs".

u/9isgt0 27d ago
lol, same feelings. wanted to pick up rise of tomb raider and shadow of tomb raider. And its more expensive than what it was in the last sale 🤦🏽♂️
24
u/Moon_Devonshire 27d ago
I mean.. shadow of the tomb raider definitive edition is still only $6 bucks right now lol

u/9isgt0 27d ago
i know 😅 just 7 months ago it was only 4 😞

u/WrethZ 27d ago
I think that was the tomb raider 30th anniversary of the first game so it was like a special celebratory event, now it's just a regular sale.

Damn you really missed out. Hopefully the next sale it's 50 cents cheaper than it is now so you don't have to get it at the egregious $6 dollar price tag.

u/TrippleDamage 27d ago
You mean when it had its whole ass franchise sale? I'd expect it to be cheaper there lol

After Dark Souls 3 the DS titles barely went to sale but still did. After Elden Ring they flatout either stopped sales (they arent on sale atm) or barely go -50% while DS 3 being 10 years old.
In 2020 it went on -80% sale and on 2021, last "not 50% sale", was -75%
Elden Ring came out 2022 and now it feels like hard -50% max on all DS games.
3
u/ViolentBeggar92 26d ago
yeah dark souls 3 + dlcs was even in a monthly humble bundle for 12$ in March 2018
ds2 was in one a year prior and now they dont even offer more than 50% off on those games

u/Chickennoodlesleuth 26d ago
People say this every year and its cause you've already bought the games that go on good sales. I dont wanna see this post 30 times a day anymore

Getting rid of flash sales seems to have been the biggest move away from the steep discounts on lots of titles.
Then again that also means you don't have to babysit Steam to keep an eye out for whatever you're hoping to find either

Agreed. I’m completely underwhelmed. At least I picked up Dead Space (remastered) for 90% off; however, I’m sure it was roughly that price a couple of months ago.
Edit: I just picked up Huntdown for 90% off, too. (It’s a side scroller in the same vein as Contra.)

Been dogshit for ages most games go 20-30% like others have said. I hardly see any new discounts, deep discounts is fantastic if u dont own any i have to say, but most people do..
3
u/Flat-Panic8622 26d ago
recently some regional prices were "updated" and some things become even more expensive
4
u/LizardOfAgatha 26d ago
What disappoints me is that old games aren't priced accordingly. I don't want to pay $15 for a 15-20 year old game 😭😭

I felt like this until I realized recently they're still awesome for people who are new to steam, because they don't have the classics yet. I've found this out cause my work buddies are only recently becoming PC gamers and the awe and wonder in which I am hearing them talk about the summer sale is really sweet.
Like, Hotline Miami is 1 dollar right now for example. Absolutely crazy good deal. You can get Doom + Doom II and the 30 years of mods that come with it for $3.99, 1 trip to mcdonalds costs almost double that.
Just because our steam libraries are absolutely stacked now and the good games are older doesn't mean things are bad now. If the sale's so bad, play your backlog of games you didn't play but bought last summer sale. I KNOW YOU HAVE ONE, WE ALL DO.

Back in the day, around 2013 - 2015, I got GTA SA, VC, LC, and the complete collection for GTA 4 with all of the DLCs for 5 USD. Now you're lucky if you get them for 10 individually.

u/JustCoffeeGaming 27d ago
What’s worse is all the sales we had for the last 3+ years. It’s always the same games on the front page with the same default sale tag. Monster Hunter, Resident Evil and Cyberpunk which finally dropped $3 this year. I got so sick of seeing these games I finally blocked them.
Instead of a sale this year, Dragons Dogma 2 decided to a price increase. Instead of the sale price of $30 now you can own it a $40.

It’s a bummer for sure. I have 50+ games on my wishlist, about half went on sale but only 4 for more than 50%. Almost all are 15-20% off which is… nice I guess.
Back in 2020ish I remember picking up disco elysium, psychonauts, mass effect trilogy AND a few indie RPGs for $12 total. Total!
This year, not a single game on my list
Is less than $15 regardless of sale.

It's because you've already bought the games that get 80-90% discounts in prior sales. Each new sale doesn't put a whole different set of games on deep discount. They'll be a few new deep discounts, but for the most part, you've dried up that well unless you've greatly expanded your tastes since the last sale.

u/SidTheSloth97 26d ago edited 26d ago
There are at least 10 games i have on my wish list right now that I was holding off on buying them for a sale. Not a single one is cheap enough for me to consider buying.
4
u/wildcardbets 27d ago
There are great deals out there, just most of you already own the games. People tend to buy so much ahead of when you play games, which is why a lot of you have massive backlogs. A lot of the games you own are probably a lot cheaper now, some by a lot. I’m not saying things are the same as back then, but the lack of low prices for a lot people are compounded by the vast libraries of unplayed games that are lot of you own.

u/stwabewwie 27d ago
I was looking forward to Silent Hill 2 and TLOU 1, but they’re both still over $30 after multiple years.
I’m genuinely just never gonna play these games and at this point I’m at peace with that.
