Fluff didn’t knew it would be our last interaction… he sent me a game from the ER
Begged him for months to go see a doctor but he only did it when it became unbearable..
It's bittersweet and I'm still processing it.. (il probably cry my soul out anyway)
But it's so heartwarming to know he thought about me even when he was at the ER

The fact that he opened Steam from the hospital just to make sure you got something on your wishlist... that says everything about him.

my dad was also a man who just knew. i wanted a red SG guitar for the longest time and one christmas he made me do a scavenger hunt for my christmas present. eventually going to his closet where the guitar was. now, i never told anyone at all i wanted this guitar, we were never very financially stable and i didnt wanna beg my dad for something i knew we couldnt afford. to say my jaw dropped when he showed it to me would be an understatement. he passed away in 2022 and while i dont play that guitar anymore ive had ones ive bought since that i just enjoy playing more, i hang that red SG on my wall like a fuckin trophy.

Some friends are very good at intuiting. They don't need you to tell them what you like, they know you well enough to be able to make an educated guess about what sort of gifts you'd like.
66
u/this_is_my_new_acct May 23 '26
My ex-wife used to get really annoyed at me because I'd always buy her the perfect Christmas/Birthday presents... they were always EXACTLY what she wanted, but she had no idea how I knew.
Turns out, I just listened to her when she'd offhandedly mention stuff, and I'd make a note. She was telling me what she wanted, she just didn't realize it (or remember having done it).
Possibly something like that?

When the grief is a little less fresh you could try to have some fun in his honor, with party size bag of snacks and a good drink.

309
u/EoTN May 23 '26
Endgame but overall minor Mechanical spoilers:
When you beat the game, you get the option to leave a final message and some items in a time capsule. These capsules can randomly be found in a playthrough, if your game is connected to the internet when you start, you can (VERY rarely) find them on the ocean's floor. Some people leave very sentimental time capsules, some are just goofy.

u/Slight-Marzipan-3017 May 23 '26
Literally played throught the game 4 times and never knew this.
114
u/AverageMako3Enjoyer May 23 '26
Incredible mechanic honestly. I only ever found one, was basically a message in a bottle from like 7 years prior from a guy just talking about what the game and its journey meant for him and hoped it would be the same for me, too. Included a picture of his base he built on the island and some items that ended up being massive boons for my progress

u/rW0HgFyxoJhYka May 23 '26
Yeah ever since Dark Souls allowed people to leave messages for others across time and space, I wish more games did this.

It's tough because you have to semi moderate it so I get why a lot just don't bother dealing with it.
11
u/The_Killer_Squirrel May 23 '26
Oh, I didn't know they were left by actual players, or are there both existing ones and player made ones? I was watching someone on YouTube playing it recently and got about 5 time capsules during his run, and thought nothing of it.
15
u/AverageMako3Enjoyer May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26
When you build the Neptune rocket in the games finale the cockpit has the option to generate a capsule with a message, photo from the PDA, and a 6 slot container to put just about any item except select items deemed to valuable (vehicle upgrades, ion items, some other various rare endgame materials) When you launch, the capsule is “deployed”, ie it is sent to the devs to be screened and when it passes is seeded for possible generation.
When the game launched and for some time after these were instead sent to a section of the Subnautica website where players would vote for capsules and they would be seeded after reaching so many votes, so some of the earliest ones were generally heartfelt or silly that garnered praise from fellow divers, but as the game aged and the playerbase waned the devs did away with the voting aspect and simply screen and seed capsules themselves
12
u/EoTN May 23 '26
I've done 3 playthroughs myself and still never seen one lol. Apparently 1-4 time capsules can spawn, but they're less than a meter long, and can spawn anywhere above ~600m depth, so it's impossibly hard to tell if they didn't spawn at all or if you just missed them.

When the time comes, will you let us know you dropped a capsule for him? You'll understand what I mean by the end of the game.
I wrote one for my friend, Michael. I've found so many from others who have dedicated their capsules to fallen friends -- and I weep for all of them, as well as feel joy that we had them in our lives in the first place.

So many people here mentioning games that are triggers for them, it seemed a good place to mention something my dad taught me.
He said, "never mark a bad day." So I don't.
He died a couple years ago. 2, I think? I don't remember which year, but 2 adds up. I only thought about it on the day this year because Mom called me to remind me, which I asked her never to do again (I explained that she's welcome to call me if it hurts, but to not point out the anniversary of his death). In a few years, I expect to forget the date and the year, though the month is probably impossible to forget (January is one that sticks with you). A few years from now, I also hope to forget the month of my cat's death, which was as painful as any human loss I've ever experienced. The date is already lost, though the range remains.
As Dad said, that day has no special meaning. The last day of a relationship, or the worst day of it, shouldn't be the thing that sticks with us. It can, but only if we let it. So, when something bad happens, I pay no more mind to that date than any other, and I let it slip away as best I can. That makes it easier for the memories to be about the person than about my painful loss of them.
To an extent, I would apply this to every marker of a painful event. We have to feel and carry the pain of loss, but we have some ability to control parts of it.
Anyway, OP, if you see this, I'm sorry for your loss, and I hope you're okay. Play the game with joy, knowing your friend did, as well, and wanted the same joy for you.

u/willargue4karma May 23 '26

u/Either-Call3198 May 23 '26
My uncle died 17 years ago. We took the road trip to his funeral. About 3 minutes after making it home. My mom had a heart attack and died. Didn't even make it to 50 years old.
I know the month and the year. I'll never know the dates. Your dad gave pretty solid advice. The pain dulls over time but never seems to go away. Best of wishes to you and sorry for your loss.

u/EmotionalGamer7 May 23 '26
I have the anniversary date of my boyfriends death marked in my calendar. His birthday just passed and I tried so hard to make it a happy day and to remember the happy things. The one year mark of his passing is coming up and I’ve been dreading it more the closer it gets. There are no happy thoughts for that day. I think this is my sign to delete the note from my calendar. Thank you for this.

I did this for my dad too, remember his birthday not his death day. Also January, but I don't recall the day, doesn't matter. Made him a chocolate cake for what would have been his 60th birthday.
4
u/PrimevilKneivel May 23 '26
You are talking my language. I’m coming up on three years since my dad died and I can only vaguely indicate when it was. I could figure it out exactly, but why bother. I want to use my memory for the time I had with him, not the day I lost him.
Celebrate good anniversaries, don’t dwell on the difficult ones. There are better ways to remember the people we miss.
4
u/SpiritGryphon May 23 '26
Thank you for sharing you dad's advice! I think I've been subconsciously doing this, though I am very bad at remembering dates anyway, and I've felt incredibly guilty for forgetting death dates or to regularly interact with memorials and gravesites whenever I am reminded - precisely because they remind me of how I should be focused on their death more than I am. I felt like I was doing my loved ones a disservice and I was grieving wrong. But it's so incredibly painful and distressing to constantly be reminded of their passing.
I think I needed the permission to grieve the way I need to grieve, and it's not by dwelling on the traumatic events, but by remembering the good days. Thank you.

It’s understandable.
It’s how we make sense of the unthinkable.
My girlfriend died in a car crash 6 months ago on her way home late from work. It was a hit and run by a stolen car and the culprit was never found.
I don’t know if I would have been able to be so forward to share those details right after it happened. Even typing them here was hard, but also I sympathize with wanting to know what happened.
Not that you asked about my situation. I just wanted to shed some light on what it’s like to be on both sides and why I’m sympathetic to those who want to know and those who say not to ask.
I will say when I made a similar Reddit post, the condolences of strangers meant a lot to me. So my condolences OP. What you’re going through is the hardest thing.

My lifemate of 28 years and wife for about a week passed suddenly from stage 4 cancer only 2 weeks after it was diagnosed.
Now I'm alone in our big house. I have to deal with her virtual land holdings in Second Life. She also had huge bases in No Man's Sky.
That was only a couple of weeks ago. I'm not as wrecked as I was, but the simplest things can set off a tearful meltdown... Like mentioning No Man's Sky. We both started it on launch, but she enjoyed it far more than I did.
I'm slowly learning to deal with it, but the hole in my soul where her song was is still raw.

I'm so sorry, it's such a terrible pain than too many people have to live through. I used to play Pokemon Go with my brother and we'd send gifts back and forth all the time. since he passed two and a half years ago, I've opened the game maybe a half dozen times. the last gift he sent me stays unopened. I can't handle the idea of the last thing he ever gave me to be gone. he also gave me a 3d printed Bulbasaur for my birthday (the last time I saw him) and I didn't have the heart to remind him it was one of my sister's favorite pokemon, not mine, but man do I have a love for them now.

I don't know if you've started your world yet or not, but when you do decide to dive in, I hope you let yourself feel everything that comes with it. The wonder, the loneliness, the fear, and the beauty of the ocean.
And if you do cry while you play, don't be ashamed of it. Let the tears fall freely. The sea has always known how to carry sorrow gently, and your tears will become part of those warm alien waters.
Keep diving. Not away from the pain, but through it. Because somewhere in the depths of this deep ocean, the memory of the person who gave you this journey is still swimming beside you.

Sorry to hear about your friend. It's not easy losing someone your close to for a long time. I'll go ahead and offer my story here: I had a friend named Nicole. She was one of my best friends from elementary school. But on December 11th, 2017, she collapsed from a heart attack into a coma. Two days after that, I was playing Ghost Recon Wildlands when my dad called me into the living room. He told me that she had died earlier that day, and as soon as I heard that, I immediately started crying. I have not played the game in a a year, and the death of my friend was almost ten years ago, but I can remember the game I played as clear as daylight.
I don't even want to think about playing that game anymore...

I was always looking for someone to play Phasmophobia with. Looking around discord, I joined a random person, we played together that night. Next day, same situation, looking for players to play, I saw her message and I joined her again. I added her and we were always chatting and messaging around Discord and Steam a lot. I played like 400 hours with her in group and alone. We were always doing theories and speaking about the next patch. She was a very kind person who out of the blue started to believe in me and being super nice.
She went to a trip with her husband and all, we were chatting a bit less but always in contact. As soon as she came from her vacation, we played again, the next day she had a birthday to attend to. She told me to be around so we'll be playing some Phasmo after the party. That was our last conversation...
I still play and love Phasmo, but I was never able to be strong enough to look for someone again, she was special, she was kind, and she was a very friendly soul.
I hope you're doing great, Nina.

My dad died in the middle of trying to Platinum The Last Of Us Part 2. We had a bad relationship. And I only had one trophy left.
After I got home from the hospital, I took a deep breath, sat down and got the final trophy.
Now when I look at my trophy list, I know that the date I unlocked the Platinum is the day he died.
That game means a lot to me. I spent a lot of my life hating and resenting him for the things he did.
I don't think I could ever forgive him for that.
...but I would like to try.
