Not just listings, there are plenty sold at 200+

2.4k

u/Tyko_3 May 04 '26

Those people are worse than the scalpers themselves in my book, enabling them in the first place.

1.1k

u/Another-Username81 May 04 '26

Yep, it never ceases to amaze me how impatient /stupid these people are.

621

u/the_light_of_dawn May 04 '26

There's a depressing number of people with far more money than sense. I'd just like to know how they got so much money to burn in the first place.

248

u/Gedaechtnispalast May 04 '26

You don’t need much sense to earn money at most jobs. Plenty of people probably bought it even though they can’t afford to buy it.

102

u/batukaming May 04 '26

the glazing is insane

70

u/TheBunchie1337 May 05 '26

It's not about having money or not it's about enabling these moron scalpers. If people had sense there would be no scalpers

A disgusting amount of people get to where they are in life because compliance is rewarded over competency

39

Or inheritance. After all, the easiest way to become a self made billionaire is to inherit millions.

Yeah what the actual fuck..just wait a little and buy for retail.

9

u/FernandoMM1220 May 04 '26

its a market problem. companies need to have tiered products so the people willing to pay $200 can give that money to steam directly instead of just scalpers.

31

u/jostein33 May 04 '26

The sad part is that they also don't sell the Controller in many parts of the world as well, forcing people to buy from scalpers even if they did not wanted to.

21

u/ObeseVegetable May 04 '26

Even then, wait a month or three for their profit margin to thin.

It's impossible they've already received their controllers, so, odds are if we report them for pre-sale, eBay would take them down.

284

u/monty228 May 04 '26 edited May 04 '26

eBay’s TOS: Presale listings must clearly state that they are "presale" in the title and description, and guarantee shipment within 40 business days of purchase. I’ve reported almost a dozen without Presale in the title or do not mention the 40 day guarantee. Let’s see what happens. I’ve only gotten the confirmation that they received the report.

Update: They’ve removed 10/13 reported so far.

46

u/lolschrauber May 04 '26

It is actually allowed to relay preorders? That's fucked up. I thought it's for the actual direct sale preorders, as in if steam themselves would take preorders vis eBay.

6

u/DaHolk May 05 '26

That's not what that says. a "presale" arrangement isn't the same as 'relaying preorders'. The former is selling something NOW, with the express intent to deliver later. The other would be to specifically sell the ability to receive delivery by a third party. They are entirely different things.

→ More replies (3)

23

u/yepitsatyhrowaway2 May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26

oh hell yeah doing this too bro
good shit

edit: heres my report rationale

"This listing appears to violate eBay’s presale and item availability policies. The product was just released today, and the seller does not appear to have the item in hand. There are no original photos of the actual item, only stock images, and no clear evidence that the seller can fulfill the order within eBay’s required 30-day timeframe.

The listing suggests the item will be shipped once the seller receives it, which indicates it is not currently available for sale. This may fall under “No item for sale” or improper presale listing.

Please review for compliance with eBay’s policies regarding presale items and item availability."

15

u/Yorick257 May 05 '26

So Gabe could do the funniest thing ever by delaying the release?

And their Internet be forever capped at dial-up speeds.

80

u/Gary-LazerEyes May 04 '26

Anyone know if these were locked behind needing a valid steam account per order? I hope so, even if it is somewhat easy to bypass.

Edit* looks like it was something like needing to have an existing $5 purchase on the account plus limited to 2 per account and scalpers were still all over it. Fuckin degens man

50

u/Zaposh May 04 '26

Can't wait for the next month, when 2000$ Gabecubes flood the ebay

6

u/Key-Department-2874 May 05 '26

Yeah it's a very low bar to hit.

Lost Ark put that restriction on Steam Accounts to trade to stop bots and there were still hundreds of thousands of bots online at any time.

Botters are more than happy to create hundreds of thousands of Steam accounts ahead of time to give them an age and spend $5+ each, they'll make more off each one, and they can be used across multiple games.

I tried to get it right at launch time. It said 3-5 days delivery, couldn't proceed to payment even if I filled the info in the first 5 minutes. Refreshed then it updated to 6-10 days delivery and the note said that there is a high number of purchases so it might take a while. Stayed in the cart page for about 50 minutes trying on and off and it worked. No idea how but I hope that everybody will be able to get theirs as soon as possible.

227

u/drunk_vader May 04 '26

Kinda similar approach to what I did and it eventually worked. Noticed the delay in shipping too.

51

u/Foooour May 05 '26

My brother did that when the PS5 launched. Refreshed until he managed to get an order through on Amazon

Then he realized he didnt want to wait like 1 of 2 days for it to ship out, spammed refresh on Best Buy and got a second order and picked it up the same day

He asked me if I wanted to buy the first one off him. I wasnt even planning on getting a PS5 but said fuck it, sure. Everyone was talking about how they were sold out everywhere and impossible to find. I think it took him maybe like 2 hours of spamming refresh in total

I think he played Astrobot or w.e for like an hour and decided to just let me have that one and wait for the Amazon order to come in. I played Demons Souls for like 8 hours straight that day

27

u/irnjck May 04 '26

Tried that and it told me I was trying to make too many purchases.

Oh welllll

10

u/Whole-Bedroom-9079 May 04 '26

I did mine at 12:58 and mine did the same thing when I hit purchase but then I check my purchase history on steam and there it was, good thing I did because I almost bought 2 if didn't.

12

u/VeryluckyorNot May 04 '26

The limit for the Steam Controller was 2 per account, I believe.

170

u/PixelatedWorld2375 May 04 '26

2 per transaction sadly

113

u/TheRoyalBrook May 04 '26

Yeah from what I saw it was a transaction rather than account unlike the steamdeck which already had stock issues.

52

u/Lil-Trup May 04 '26

I guess that’s why it took 30 minutes instead of 30 seconds

24

u/die_lahn May 04 '26

Can confirm got 2 on my account after clicking about 500x.

I’m not a piece of shit scalper I just wanted one for the tv and one for the computer so I didn’t have to constantly re-pair between the two places I play

6

u/sturmeh May 05 '26

It doesn't require repairing, but you would need two pucks anyway.

39

u/bugamn May 04 '26

Some people said here on Reddit that they ordered two or four

48

u/SabreSour May 04 '26

limit was a max of two. but those limits are more drive away the basic public from ordering 4 or 6. they don't stop the real scalpers. You can bet your ass scalpers deliberately prepping in advance easily got whatever amount they wanted. Mostly likely with bots and fake accounts.

10

u/veryblocky May 04 '26

I read it was 2 per transaction, and you could go in and make another transaction if you wanted

10

u/popky1 May 04 '26

I can’t see these selling too well on the secondary market. Unless it’s the people laundering steam wallets willing to sell them at a loss

21

u/Moonshine_Brew May 04 '26

They are currently getting sold very successfully on ebay for up to $250.

So nope, scalpers sadly managed to profit big time once again.

Wish companies would limit the first batch to 1 per address.

22

u/Efficient-Parking627 May 05 '26

How about first batches only to steam accounts with X+ years active ,with game purchases and play time in the games? Not to say that legit gamers can't be scalpers but at least it might eliminate some bots...

4

u/albertowtf May 05 '26

As with all things internet you stop the casual person doing it but it wont stop the pros

I wonder if they could do something like link preorders to their purchasing account in advance for a couple months. I legit wouldn't mind that for the frame.

I guess maybe it's more likely to screw someone who buys from a scalper than a scalper? I dunno. Some kind of temporary non-transference seems like a pretty strong way to fight this kind of stuff.

Just dont buy from scalpers, that simple. Make them lose money and time or else this will never stop

414

u/Alucard-VS-Artorias May 04 '26

Thing is wealthy assholes who don't care will support them.

190

u/Smyles9 May 04 '26

That’s why everyone should report the listings on eBay too to minimize as many sales as possible and punish them for trying to scalp

86

u/real_roal May 04 '26

Does ebay even care? Dont pokemon scalpers sell on ebay?

109

u/Smyles9 May 04 '26

With the controller because they don’t actually have the product themselves yet in person it’s against eBay’s TOS, but not scalping itself from what I understand. By immediately reporting these listings eBay hopefully bans the seller for this preventing them from doing it later without making a fake account.

35

u/Psyngelic May 04 '26

It doesn't work that way, unfortunately. As someone else noted, ebay DOES allow pre-sales, just as long as the listing is clearly stated to be one, and as long as it is shipped within 40 days.

A big problem people forget with Valve hardware is there are a ton of regions they don't sell to directly. So if you want to buy them, you have to buy thru 3td party apps and pay a markup anyways. So I bet there's a lot of people buying at $200+ because they know even if they wait weeks or months, they'll probably still have to pay like $150+ for one anyways.

8

u/Deathsroke May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26

I honestly hate that. Valve doesn't ship to my country? Well whatever, I'll take care of the shipping but at least sell the fucking hardware to me. By not even allowing us to buy they force us to pay third party sellers and their abusive pricing. I got my Steam Deck at 400 usd I think (a friend living in the US got it for me) while it was selling at 800-1000 usd in my country.

I would love being able to get the Frame but I know that if it's 700 usd or more in the US I'll be paying 2-3 times as much here.

17

u/Noob4Head Proud Steam delivery girl collector May 04 '26

I know, but I still want to know what that “fair few” actually means. It’s very ambiguous.

I know what I’m about to say is a completely different ballpark, but bear with me… I’ve never seen the Microsoft Xbox controller or Sony DualSense controller completely sell out, and Steam is by far the most popular platform on PC, so I’d assume many people would have had interest in the Steam Controller. So that just leads me to think the stock probably wasn’t that large.

u/motes-of-light May 04 '26

I believe there was a limit of 2 per Steam account, and accounts had to have been active for at least a year. It's not foolproof, but it's better than a lot of other vendors do.

5

u/IcariFanboi May 05 '26

It was 2 per transaction, not an account limit, as far as I can tell. Which meant scalper bots that were already crashing the server could just spam click it.

And you only needed an account that was eligible to trade on steam, meaning having spent 5 bucks on the account. And trade ready accounts are easily buyable online. Or you can just make them yourself, the return on investment would be high, especially given the fact that Valve didn't sell these in every country, meaning scalpers had an actual market these overpriced resales were good in.

u/izzyb412 May 04 '26

I think I got an rsi from clicking the "confirm" button so many times.

u/Mad_Spaniel May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26

I had it in my cart for a good while. Had to spam the continue button to get the purchase confirmed, but it went through in the end and the funds taken from my account. More than expecting a delay from the 7 - 10 days stated though.

u/Raso_Kye May 04 '26

So happy I managed to snag one. Very disappointed in steam for not doing something like "Only available to accounts over a year old and has x amount of playtime" Also very disappointed that the store broke while trying to check out. Valve this is you umpteenth time doing a major hardware release, y'all should be able to take precautions to curb scalping and keep the storefront running during large influxes rather than the 20mins of payment errors I encounted. The only silver lining is that these things don't have RAM, so it will come back into stock sooner rather than later.

Stop buying from scalpers and they'll have no reason to do it. People who buy this shit instead of waiting a couple of months are dumb as fucking rocks.

It’s just a controller, they can restock easier than say, a console. Just don’t pay the dipshit scalpers.

8

u/Juliomorales6969 May 04 '26

9 minutes straight of clicking checkout is what it took to get the controller but its worth it

18

u/MustyLlamaFart May 04 '26

So I should just expect to get the steam machine 2 years after launch then

11

u/OcculticVII May 04 '26

Or never depending on how valve operates the damn site.

4

u/Moist-Barber May 04 '26

You should expect to enjoy the steam machine by YouTube reviews

Seeing them on Ebay already. Some were $350-$400

9

u/kamrankazemifar May 04 '26

I don’t get why they couldn’t just limit it to 1 per verified Steam account or 1 per household. They already have the tech for this.

7

u/sendmebirds May 04 '26

It's not just scalpers? It's insane demand. Also they are releasing more stock in waves, just like the OLED Deck.

Keep trying you'll get yours.

9

u/Of-Two-Swords May 05 '26

EBay and other sites need to ban any accounts trying to sell something before it has even been shipped, how is it even legal. Absolute cunts

22

u/An_Individual27 May 04 '26

The scalpers definitely do have a hand in this but I also blame Steam personally. They should’ve known better. They should’ve made the controllers “pre-order” ready to avoid a situation like this. I pray they don’t do the same for the Steam Machine when that releases. It’s obvious it’s going to be in high demand but limited quantity for now because of RAAM. They have to make it “pre-order” and not “time” released.

10

u/alexagente May 04 '26

My hope is they really thought it would be niche enough not to matter.

They made efforts to combat scalping with their release of Steam Deck so it's not like they don't have the tools.

Would definitely appreciate an effort to combat it next batch. Hopefully Valve delivers on that.

u/CaffeinatedLystro May 04 '26

Why does Steam not regulate this shit?

Rip to the employed

12

u/Marrond May 04 '26

Those pesky unemployed people, blowing up $100 on a game controller xD

4

u/Heavenswake_ May 05 '26

Need to start using those vacation days for hardware releases.

People who buy from scalpers are why this is a problem, there is just so much fomo in the entertainment/collection industry that people feel like they HAVE to get the latest cool thing immediately instead of waiting, even if they end up paying well over retail for it. Wish companies would just implement a lottery system, that way it’s completely random and at least bots won’t get the first come first serve at it.

12

u/xHamartia May 05 '26

shouldve had a secret limit or some shit, like how when u make a new steam acc u cant add friends and shit till you have $5 on ur acc, u should at least own a single paid game with at least 50 hours on it or some shit. i dont want to call steam out but they enable this shit just like the people who buy it off the scalpers enable it. there are many ways to counteract ts at least to some degree.

3

u/Wise_Control May 05 '26

Yeah, I love valve. But this is on them, if they have nothing in place to prevent this.

If someone is dumb enough to buy it, that's on them. Scalpers literally wouldn't exist if people had a brain and patience. Unfortunately that is rare today.

Got mine after 40 minutes of spamming "continue".

I think in Europe it took a bit more time to get sold out, but not much, about 90 minutes after launch it was sold out.

3

u/Slothbrok May 04 '26

Omg I got one I'm so happy !

Scalpers still being a problem is something we should all find a solution to. Especially companies.

6

u/TheKiwiFox May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26

Scalpers can kiss my ass, got mine after spamming the purchase button for 5 minutes. All the prayers for everyone who wanted one and missed out this go around 🥲

6

u/MarioEatsGrapes May 05 '26

Does nobody remember the original steam controller 10 years ago? That sold out quickly too but was eventually so available it was discounted everywhere. I wouldn’t lose sleep over not getting the earliest model.

3

u/myheadsmt May 05 '26

I still have my OG steam controller, got it with a steam link, super cheap...

My plan for this controller was the same as most things I buy off steam, I'm waiting for a sale

I wish scalpers would just get deleted throughout all multiverses. I think We gotta gather the infinity stones yall

8

u/Rocket_Foxx May 04 '26

As im one of those adults with more responsibilities than disposable income, gonna be a couple to probably many month before i will be getting one of these anyhow, by which time the scalpers will probably have got bored and moved on. patience is a virtue so they say.

4

u/Aldoxpy May 04 '26

I managed to get one and I won't lie, it's tempting but I am not an ass and I actually want to be able to play armored brigade 2 from my couch :3

4

u/ToxicEnderman00 May 04 '26

I shouldn't be spending money right now anyway. I'll wait for more stock, I'll never buy anything from a scalper

3

u/spoople_doople May 05 '26

And here I was waiting for pay day to grab one

4

u/Missael235 May 05 '26

I hate scalpers so much, they're the cancer of humanity.

4

u/HotDecision8128 May 05 '26

If people stopped buying from scalpers, this shit would end.

4

u/OfcWaffle May 05 '26

I wanted one, just to have. I'll wait until supply meets demand. Not going to support scalpers.

5

u/ohborealus May 05 '26

I think that, for the steam machine, Valve should put some system in place to prevent this. Idk. limit purchasing to accounts that are older than 12 months and ofc active (idk 10h minimal activity in the last 2 weeks before the sale). Also ffs limit it to one per account. Would be fantastic if they could limit purchasing to one per ip or hardware somehow - not ideal but the more obstacles scalpers have, the greater the change for normal, and sane people, to be able to get one.

3

u/ULikeWhatUS33 May 05 '26

Well Saddly scalping is the only way I can get mine, because Valve simply refuses to sell hardware where I live.

I Will have to pay a shit ton of money, probably, but it is what it is. Just wish Valve sold it officially in more places.

3

u/CapnMikeM May 04 '26

Was the easiest purchase I’ve had for a pre-order in recent memory. Went up for sale a few mins early and was checked out before 10am.

3

u/PabloNj May 05 '26

Why is this controller being sold at that price? Is it a good controller? I haven’t watched or read anything about it.
