My pacifist Rimworld colony's "no killing" policy lasted exactly one (1) muffalo pregnancy
So I'm 60 days into a run with my ideological "gentle" colony - no organ harvesting, no prisoner execution, we even release captured raiders because my colonists have the "kind" trait and I wanted a wholesome story. Very proud of myself. Peak roleplay.
Then a raider faction attacks with like 4 guys. My colony downs all of them (non-lethal, obviously, we're SAINTS). Great, now I've got 4 prisoners. Recruit two, they become farmers. The other two refuse to join no matter how much "resistance" I break, so per my own rules I release them at the map edge like a good little Buddhist monk.
Cut to 11 days later: the exact same two guys come back. With backup. Sixteen guys this time.
Turns out "releasing prisoners" doesn't erase them from the faction's memory, it just tells them exactly where my base is, how many walls I have, and that my colonists apparently fight like they're made of pillows. I basically ran a hostage-and-release scouting program for the enemy for free.
They break through my killbox (which, in fairness, was really more of a "please stop" box) in about 40 seconds. My best shooter, Ezra "Doc" Whitfield, gets downed. I panic and manually draft my chef to drag him inside - the chef gets shot in the process and now has a permanent limp AND a mental break because he witnessed his friend almost die while holding a kitchen knife instead of a gun, because I told you, this was a PACIFIST colony, nobody had guns equipped, they were all doing HARVEST JOBS.
Somewhere around colonist #3 going down I finally say screw it and my remaining two guys start shooting to kill. We survive. Barely. I have three permanently maimed colonists, one guy with a bionic leg I definitely couldn't afford, and a graveyard with two raiders in it that I had to bury because leaving corpses out was giving everyone "disturbed by corpse" debuffs for a week straight.
The pacifist colony's founding document has since been quietly amended to "no killing, unless."
Anyway 10/10 game, would get emotionally attached to a limping chef named Gary again.
