No Spoilers Rules announcement

With Cytonic release imminent, we thought it was time to introduce two changes to the subreddit rules. These changes are designed to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the books unspoiled.

Rule #1: all posts must be flaired with the appropriate spoiler level, and comments outside the scope of that flair must be spoiler guarded. (In general, if a post isn't flaired, the moderators will make a best guess as to the appropriate flair level and set it manually --- but we'd really prefer that you flair it when posting. :) People have generally been doing this already, for which we are grateful :))

The idea behind this rule is that, by specifying a spoiler level on posts, it becomes possible for people to avoid reading the content of posts that are about books they haven't read yet.

Rule #2: post titles may not contain spoilers, and posts whose titles do contain spoilers are subject to removal.

The idea behind this rule is that, because spoiler tags do not work in titles and titles (once set) are uneditable, it is impossible for someone browsing the subreddit to avoid spoilers if spoilers are allowed in titles. If we want to enable people who haven't read Cytonic to come here to talk about ReDawn (for example), the only way for that to be safe is if we disallow spoilers in titles.

These rules are both in place over in the other Sanderson-related subreddits, and generally work pretty well, so we do not anticipate major issues with them here.

That said, if you have concerns, objections, appreciation, or any other reaction, we'd like to hear it; this is, in the end, a community subreddit, and we want to make sure that the rules are things the community agrees to and is comfortable with.

Mosquitoes and Flies Spoiler

This is a dumb/funny post

Mosquitoes and flies gotta be cytonic. They know, before I move even a little, when I'm about to attempt a sneak attack, and I swear they do be hyper jumping.

Defiant Is it just me or did Sanderson just forget about..?

Morningtide? I've recently relistened to the entire series on audiobooks and after Skyward, whenever Spensa contemplates the people she's lost it's always Hurl and Bim. Especially in Defiant, we get almost a full rundown of all the people she's lost when she tries to comfort Chet about the death of Grangran - only for Morningtide to be missing again. She was shot down in the same battle as Bim and while Bim and Spensa seemed to have some chemistry, I think that Morningtide had a genuine influence on Spensa mellowing out a little and be less stand-off-ish with her flight members once she realizes she doesn't speak English very well. And yet she's constantly forgotten in subsequent books when Spensa remembers her fallen flight mates Bim and Hurl.

I mainly just wanted to rant a little. And maybe see if other people noticed the same. That's all.

Defiant It’s funny that it happened twice

Rereading it now and finds it funny that the early Defiant people brought everyone and all records together and got bombed by a lifebuster, and the Kitsune cytonics did the same thing. Both times leading to loss of key knowledge for the entire civilization. Make back up, guys! Don’t put all your knowledge base in the same place!

Defiant A silly idea

I have been enjoying my second listen to the Skyward series on audible, and nearly finished with Cytonic again. If there's one thing I genuinely would want to change about the book series, it would be "scud" as their ONLY damn curse word. I know Brandon Sanderson likes to keep things super clean, but I would kill for a genuine "oh shit" or "holy fuck" every once in awhile.

Just because I think it would be hilarious, I'd pay a decent chunk of money to have an addition of the audiobook where most every use of "scud" is replaced with a fitting variation of a Samuel L Jackson curse out. A few scuds can remain of course, but imagine getting a little chuckle here and there, like when M-Bot says his first curse... now picture that scene with a nice Sam Jackson "motherfucker!" Am I nuts, or is that an amazing idea?

No Spoilers I made a Skyward fan game!

On and off over the past couple of years I've been making a dog-fighting sim based on Skyward in the Unity game engine. It is a work in progress, so there's not much to do besides target practice currently.

Find the game on Itch.io

Using the Light Lance
The Dashboard

Currently implemented features:

  • The Ship basics. Thrust, acclivity ring, shields, gravcaps, proximity sensor.
  • G force system (Make sure to avoid overloiading your gravcaps when making a tight light lance turn)
  • Destructors (Burst, Automatic and Sniper modes)
  • IMP (Inverted Magellan Pulse, take out all shields within 50 meters, including your own)
  • Light lance (a grappling hook attached to the bottom of your ship)

A quick explanation on the controls:

The thrust works by setting what speed you want to go. Hold shift to increase what speed you want to go and control to decrease. Holding shift will make you go faster and faster until reaching max speed. This is so fast you can be knocked out and never wake up.

The acclivity ring turns of gravity for the ship if its mostly facing down. Holding F will increase the speed at which you go up, C to decrease it.

What would you like me to add first?

  • Polish: More sound effects, better ship model, improved Dashboard, etc.
  • Split-screen multiplayer and game modes: Play with or against someone else.
The new 3d model (Work in progress)

Any and all feed back is very welcome!

what did you think about the ending of starsight?

i just finished starsight and wow, i have mixed feelings about how it wrapped up. the character development was off the charts, especially for spensa. but some plot twists felt a bit rushed, and i was left with so many questions! it really makes me eager for the next book in the series. anyone else feeling the same way? what do you think the implications of the ending are for the next installment? let's chat about it!

I am thinking about making a skyward themed game, would anyone be interested?

The game would follow the books exact storyline, with all the same characters and plots. It will have AAA style graphics and real world physics, let me know if any of you would play it.
