Prelude to stickied post - throw in your recommendations!

A good day to you all, fine subscribers of this subreddit! As you all have seen, in recent weeks our great sub has been overflowing a bit with posts asking questions which a lot of us have seen for... well, years. Because of that, I've had a chat with /u/tehfink and offered my services to help out getting the sub back on track. To start off, I want to do so by collecting input from y'all on which plugins you see as essential... but also why this particular one instead of another. If you know of more plugins that do the same (more or less) thing, please also tell us why you've opted for a specific plugin instead of the others. So Push/Pull some some stuff out of that brain of yours onto the internet and help the next generation of SketchUp users (and maybe old dogs like myself) to use the program more efficiently!

Your friendly Admin & Mods NEW USERS: START HERE

Welcome to SketchUp, the easy-to-start, hard-to-master 3D modelling program from @Last Google Trimble. SketchUp, like any program you start using, has its own quirks. One of these is that up until this day (we're talking March 2025), the program uses a single core of your processor to run. If you want to render your models, you want a dedicated GPU, depending on the rendering software you use. To help you started, we have compiled a list of things you want to think about.

The Computer
Your first stop on this wonderful journey is to see if your preferred setup is good enough to run the program. Here's what the official website has to say:

  • Windows Recommended Hardware Requirements

    • A 2+ GHz processor.
    • A graphics card that’s separate from the CPU, also known as a discrete graphics card. Most current generation AMD or NVIDIA cards on the market are considered discrete.
    • At least 8GB of RAM.
    • At least 6GB of available hard disk space.
    • A modern GPU with at least 8GB VRAM. SketchUp’s classic renderer requires OpenGL 3.1 support. SketchUp’s performance relies on your graphics card driver and its ability to support OpenGL 3.1 or higher.
    • A modern GPU with at least 32GB of VRAM when interacting with models utilizing materials with Physically Based Rendering texture maps, Ambient Occlusion, and Image Based Lighting.
    • A 3-button, scroll-wheel mouse.
  • Mac OS 15 (Sequoia), 14+ (Sonoma), 13+ (Ventura), 12+ (Monterey) Software Requirements

    • An internet connection both to install and authorize your subscription. Some features within SketchUp also require an internet connection.
    • QuickTime 5.0 and web browser for multimedia tutorials. Safari.
  • Recommended Mac OS Hardware Requirements

    • 2.1+ GHz processor or current generation Apple M1 processor
    • At least 8GB of RAM
    • At least 6GB of available hard-disk space
    • A modern GPU with at least 1GB of memory. SketchUp’s classic renderer requires OpenGL 3.1 support.
    • A 3-button, scroll-wheel mouse

Does your preferred computing option (be it desktop or laptop) not meet these requirements? Then know that helping you out with your problems is going to be an issue that we might not be able to help you with.

Peripherals
Modelling in 3 dimensions is something else compared to taking a pen and draw. However, it is exactly that use case that SketchUp was initially made for. And even though everyone has their own preferences, some things can make your life easier.

  • Mouse
Your main way of interacting with the program. It is highly recommended you use a mouse which has programmable buttons. A lot of users swear by Logitech's MX Master series of mouses, yours truly included. If you can get it to work, assigning the Orbit tool to the thumbrest works very well. Others assign other buttons on the mouse for this task. You'll have to figure out what works best for you.
  • 3D Mouse
There's also a more specialised peripheral for 3D work: the 3D mouse. A 3D mouse that has been known to work great with SketchUp is 3D Connexion's Space Mouse. If you're serious getting the most out of SketchUp (or any modelling software, for that matter), it might be worth investing in one of these.
  • Keyboard
Having a keyboard with programmable buttons (macro's) can be beneficial, but is not entirely necessary. Know that SketchUp offers a slew of shortcuts out of the digital box to make selecting functions easier. Find a handy list of those here. Others like using a dedicated keyboard for these tasks, like the Stream Deck, which features programmable buttons which then also display the icons.

It can be that a mod or admin has removed your post and pointed you here. That is not because we don't like you, but we've noticed a lot of "what kind of laptop" or "what are the system requirements" posts. These are basic questions which we hope to consolidate into this post.

For now, let me finish with two simple questions which have a not so simple answer:

What is the best laptop, and what is the best computer to run SketchUp 2025 on?
Please add the "why" to your answer. Also try to give us a cost indication. We'll update this post every quarter to reflect software updates of the program itself and given hardware suggestions.

Best workflow for 2D elevations in SketchUp/LayOut from AutoCAD DWGs (no 3D modeling)

I'm looking for the most efficient workflow.

I normally work entirely in AutoCAD, but I'm helping a designer who works exclusively in SketchUp + LayOut. The architect sent us a DWG that already includes the interior elevations, and my task is simply to produce those 2D elevations in LayOut. There is no 3D modeling involved.

My questions are:

  • Do I simply import the DWG into SketchUp and create scenes from the imported CAD geometry?
  • Should I clean up the DWG before importing (purge, layers, blocks, etc.)?
  • Once the DWG is imported, do I need to trace over the imported CAD lines with SketchUp linework, or can I use the imported CAD geometry directly for my elevations and dimensioning in LayOut?

Thank you!!

Merci

I want to import a custom material, but it does not work because I need to convert it to an SKM file. Do any of you know where to do it? There isn't anything on the Sketchup website either.

Hey, been thinking of using more plugins, what’s a good one you recommend. I have all the obvious Fredo ones and JHS POWERBAR, but what’s a good one people are sleeping on? Interested to see what everyone’s loving right now

Part 2: Demo of the messy DWG/DXF cleanup workflow I’m testing

A few weeks ago I posted about a SketchUp workflow I’m testing for messy DWG/DXF imports.

Original post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Sketchup/comments/1tgx8ov/testing_a_sketchup_workflow_for_messy_dwg_imports/

I’ve now recorded a short demo video showing the current workflow.

The problem I’m trying to solve is this:

You import CAD linework into SketchUp, but the file comes in with gaps, duplicate edges, broken curves, messy layers, or geometry that looks fine in CAD but refuses to form clean faces in SketchUp. Then the actual modeling work gets delayed because you’re stuck tracing, healing, flattening, and trying different face-making tools.

In the video, I start from a normal SketchUp template, open the Face Healer tool, run through the main cleanup workflow, and show the result inside SketchUp.

This is still a test build, not a public release or sales post. I’m mainly trying to understand whether this solves a real enough problem for people who regularly work with CAD imports.

I’m looking for feedback from SketchUp users who deal with DWG/DXF files:

- What part of CAD import cleanup wastes the most time for you?

- Are gaps, duplicate edges, bad curves, layers, scale/origin issues, or missing faces the biggest problem?

- Do you currently use Make Faces, Eneroth Face Creator, FaceUp, S4U MakeFace, CleanUp, or manual redrawing?

- If you had a messy DWG/DXF file, what would you expect a cleanup tool to fix before you trusted it?

If anyone has a small stripped-down sample area from a problem file, I’d also be interested in testing against real cases. No client info, no title blocks, no private project data. Just a small section that reproduces the issue.

I need help.

Starting To Freelancing With Sketchup & LayOut

Hello everyone!

My name is Tanner! I have been using SketchUp and LayOut for about 5 years. I used to use it basically everyday for work, but now I don't. My circumstances have changed and I had to get another job and it does not involve design work. Recently I have needed to make some more income, and since I have 5 years of experience in SketchUp I thought I could use it. I need some advice on how I would go about doing that. I have previous connections as well that can help me with my reach in finding clients. I wanted some advice on it still though.

So far I have a business name setup with an gmail. I have some cards coming that I can put up in my local library and other places just to start. I am not expecting a lot from that but a good friend told me that its worth putting some on a bulletin board in case some one needs my services.

If any of you have any experience, advice or tips and tricks, please feel free to message me. Thank you so much! My work email is [email protected].

I use Sketchup for everything, it’s the only software I’m familiar with and have access to. Architectural renderings, simple mechanical product mockups, handy gadgets around the house, and now making items for 3D printing.

Looking for SketchUp users to help improve my expanding Murphy bed design (SKP file included)

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I'm designing a horizontal Murphy bed that opens as an 80 × 200 cm single bed and expands into a 160 × 200 cm double bed.

I've created a first concept in SketchUp and I'm sharing the original .skp file because I'd love to get input from other SketchUp users.

My goal is to make this design as:

  • Simple as possible
  • Strong and rigid
  • Easy to manufacture
  • Easy to assemble
  • Cost-effective
  • Suitable for everyday use

The current model is only a first concept. Nothing is finalized, so feel free to rethink any part of the design.

I'm especially interested in improvements to:

  • The expanding frame
  • The sliding/guiding mechanism
  • The center support
  • Overall rigidity
  • Reducing the number of parts
  • Making manufacturing and assembly easier

If you'd like, feel free to modify the SketchUp model directly and upload your version or screenshots of your changes. I'd love to compare different approaches and learn from them.

Constructive criticism and alternative ideas are more than welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Bug Extensions consistently flagged at startup

Hi guys,

I recently had to replace the CPU and MB on my computer; since doing so SketchUp decided that every plug-in - both community and official - are incompatible and must be updated. But extension warehouse has no updates. I've repaired, I've uninstalled and reinstalled, I've made sure to use admin to both install and launch.

When I tell the extension manager to uninstall individual plugins I have a 50% chance of bugsplatting. I have 100% chance of them mysteriously still being present on my next launch, erroring again.

Anyone any idea what on earth SketchUp is doing and how to fix it?

Send me a rough SketchUp kitchen export and I'll try to make it client-ready

JPG or PNG is perfect. I'm building rendering software and thought it'd be fun to try it on a few community kitchen designs, then reply with the before-and-after results. No link or signup. Please only share designs you own or have permission to post.
