Anyone with a passing knowledge of federal law could have told them that. We are not an ICC member and visiting heads of state have absolute immunity unless the home country waives it.
Yes, it’s pretty obvious Netanyahu is a war criminal, but there are many who need someone important and significant to say it, as there is far too few who have the balls to do so. Thank you for your attention to this matter
And lots of Americans are morons, and Mamdani made this message in part to explain to those people why he cannot do a thing many of them want. It's, y'know, reasonable messaging to explain to people who aren't knowledgeable about laws or politics why the government is acting the way it's acting.
But Mamdani also made this message to encourage people who aren't morons to pay attention to what Netanyahu has led Israel to do, and to encourage them to try to stop more atrocities from happening.
Speaking up won't accomplish much, but when we see crimes happening near us, it's something we should do anyway, so others won't assume we're fine with those crimes.
This is Mamdani's way of closing out the campaign promise he made that he would try to have Netanyahu arrested. He doesn't have any standing to do so...so he makes this video condemning him, saying he can't do anything legally, and then move on to whatever's next.
Edit for some more color: There is a reason he is putting this out now. The UN General Assembly kicks off in a bit over a month and a half. He wants this out in public but also out of the news cycle before Netanyahu and world leaders arrive in NY. It defuses any potential conflict he would have to deal with by allowing him and his office to point to this video for why he didn't take any action like he said he would as well as explain why he doesn't meet with Netanyahu or the Israeli delegation as it is customary for the Mayor to meet with many of the leaders during the course of the assembly due to NYC being the host city.
I don't know what bro expects from Mamdani. Most politicians don't even have enough spine to say what he said in this video. Accepting and actually speaking about how Netanyahu being a war criminal is the first step towards actual prosecution.
I actually applaud Mamdani for taking all of his promises seriously. I agree with what he says here, but the reality was that NY doesn't have any standing and even Federally, the US doesn't recognize the ICC (which Mamdani alludes to).
Even if this is a CYA video...he takes a stand, explains his position, and explains what he tried and why he won't act. Which is what accountability looks like...addressing why or why not when it comes to what actions you promised vs took.
This, is already much for a politician, he had goodwill and intentions but the law was not in line with his vision. So he *could* only settle for next best thing, a ban from New York city and a clear condemnation. For that, i praise him before any politician in the united states of America.
I doubt he can even enforce the ban. So he's just gonna say Netanyahu isn't welcome, and when Netanyahu inevitably shows up in September for the UNGA ignore meeting with him.
He knew this was never a possibility. Any suggestion he could, as a city mayor, arrest extrajudicially kidnap a foreign head of state is a legal absurdity. "Arrest" is not the right word as there is no crime to charge him with, US is not a signatory to the ICC and Bibi has committed no crime in the USA.
So Mamdani's talk was just strongman style "I arrest people I don't like, to hell with the law." There was never anything more to it than that. Now that the rubber's hit the road he has to admit that was always the case. "We looked into" 🙄 please. This was never anything but red meat theatre for the base.
Anyone could have told him that the US isn’t. Member if the ICC so it’s not even a question. They didn’t do one bit of research, it was a political stunt and nothing else.

I do wonder if it's the right move politically, as it's not really usually the kind of thing a mayor weighs in on. But I fully agree with the content of it.
I actually respect him more for the fact that it may go against the political grain, so to speak. He saw something wrong and he's speaking out against it, regardless of what it may do for his career. Good on him.

I like Mamdani but I don't think any amount of his focus should be on Israel issues when he is Mayor NYC. If he was in a federal position it would be different but this does nothing for actual New Yorkers.
No mention of Hamas in this video. Hamas is happy that the Palestinians have been killed. They couldn’t have predicted how successful they would be at suiciding their own people.

Thats my issue with this or any other similar statement. He’s the mayor of a city. He literally never had legal authority to arrest Bibi. And yet he made it a campaign promise and you know people voted for him on this one question he literally can’t manage. Like…I get that he makes nice promises but how does anyone with common sense take him seriously?
It may not be his responsibility, but the authorities that should take responsibility for it simply aren't. If Trump can use the presidency to piss and moan about stuff that has jack shit to do with the presidency(World Cup referee calls? Really?), I don't see an issue with this lol
Yes, much like many countries who are legally obligated to execute the warrant, this mayor feels morally compelled to align his policy with that much of the OECD.
Hamas ran through Israel and raped and pillaged over 1,200 Israeli’s on 10/7/23. They took over 240 citizens as hostages. They brought back the bodies of slain Israel’s to parade in front of roaring crowds in their hometowns.
We destroyed two entire countries for crashing planes into our buildings. If a bunch of 12th century barbarians cut the heads off our babies and waited outside of safe rooms in people’s houses so they could rape the families, we would’ve glassed everyone of them.

I’m not sure what a neutral party looks like, but it would be great to have a coalition or group of people take a stand on this. Mamdani on his own sends a certain message. With so many Americans on both sides of the political spectrum siding against the conflict in Palestine, I think it would be more impactful to have a few, influential people calling out Israel together. Especially before the midterms. We know they are out there. Imagine if Fucker Carlson was there with him. I think that would break the internet.

He was asked a question by a reporter, he looked into it thoroughly, and he is answering that question. The UN is in NYC, and it's the centre of the diplomatic world.
Well he did make campaign promises saying that ad mayor he would carry out the outstanding arrest when Bibi came to the city. Now he's announcing that he's tried but doesn't have the authority. I respect the fact that he is informing his constituents instead of trying to distract away from it and I REALLY respect the fact that this is a politician who accepts the limits put on his power instead of going on a campaign trying to gain authority he doesn't have.

He brought up the horrific totality of the death count of men, women, boys and girls in the video at 73k deaths and your response is to just to highlight the 38k women and girls deaths? Why would you do that?
