i switched this begonia to semi hydro because the leaves were drying, and she dropped most of the leaves she had left 😭

does anyone have any experience with begonias in semi hydro? i’m afraid she’s on her way out

I moved my hypoestes plant from soil to leca 2 weeks ago and it was doing really well until today. some of the leaves are floppy and starting to curl. Should I put it back into soil or wait it out?

So I have a monstera esqueleto, burle Marx flame, and deliciosa in LECA. None of the have grown any leaves in 6 months, they just keep growing roots non stop. All three were top cuts rooted in LECA, so I don’t think it’s a transition issue. Are their pots too big? Should I be pushing more nutes? My concern with moving to smaller pots is there not being enough weight from the media to keep them anchored in, particularly with their supports. Any ideas would be appreciated!

I transitioned my Hoya Bella to semi hydro, in leca, back in February and she didn’t take it well. Her leaves shrivelled up and developed dark spots and by May I didn’t think she was going to make it. However, in June I noticed a bit of new growth and some of her peduncles looked a bit plumper. Now, she’s perked right back up and get a load of these blooms!

I have a ThaiCon Monstera I transitioned to LECA about 10 days ago. It seems to be doing well for right now, but I’m unfamiliar with this process as my other monstera is simply in a bourbon bottle filled with water lol. I am also interested in climbing and moss poles in semihydroponics? Not sure if it’s any different from soil or actual hydro. If anyone has tips or information that would be great :)

Thinking about giving semi hydro a try! I started collecting houseplants a few months ago and somehow went from 1 to 100 in a short period of time. I should probably join a support group 😂. I’m realizing that watering takes a ton of time!! I’d like to utilize the ceramic pots I already have if possible. Have any of you had luck with something like this inside of a ceramic pot? Thanks!

i’m running fox farms happy frog soil. i have gaia green 4-4-4 and 2-8-4 but the guy at local hydro store said i should probably look into liquid nutrients. any suggestions? could also use a good cal mag nutrient as well. very new to this any help is appreciated

I bought these pots from Amazon. They’re terracotta. The idea is the material pulls water in as the plant needs it but given that these are plants I’ve had growing in semi-hydro for a while, I’m worried the roots won’t actually have access to enough water in this setup. Does anyone have any insight?

This pot design solves a few problems. First it's easy to clean the reservoir, you can un-thread the jar (uses a generic 3 inch, salsa/jam/pasta) without disturbing the plant, hanger or trellis. Huuuge pain solved! Second it cannot be over filled, the pot uses a gyroid infill texture on the walls, kind of like a mesh - so the pot is completely permeable (AND AIRY). I can leave it outside in the rain and not worry about over saturating the plant. Third, I finally have a good use for all these jars I normally throw out/recycle. anyway, I'm really excited to see how my plants like it. I think most epiphytes would like it. (hoyas, orchids) I just repotted my clem and pot of gold this morning.

I also made a simple device to put together a wire hanger and it's also available to d/l and print. (uses 14 gauge wire and a bike spoke or 11 gauge for the hook)

(yes! I am making other sizes and threads (mason jar threads 5" pot soon). Also open to suggestions and recommendations and brain storming.)

Reaching out to the community because I am stumped. About a year ago I got into semi-hydro and it is/was going pretty good. Only lost a few plants in the switch over. I tried submerged and wick method but ultimately had best luck with the wick since it gave a more even amount of moisture. My plants seemed to do great including Alocasia which is my favorite. I also have some standard stuff like Pothos and Syngonium.

My problem is that recently I have lost several plants (mostly Alocasia) due to rot. They seem to thrive for 6-9 months then take a dive over just a few days. When I pull them out, the roots are rotten. I just chalked it up to Alocasia being dramatic but the reason for my post is that I just had it happen on a Philodendren Scandens Pictis which was doing great for probably 9 months. The roots coming out of the bottom of the inner pot into the reservior looked great, white, thick, etc. but when I pulled it out of the pon, everything in between was rotten. Obviously there is not enough oxygen getting to the roots in the medium (I use pon or leca or a combo of both) but I don't know why they are not getting enough or how to fix it.

I use Superthrive Pro along with rootboost, hyrdoguard, and silico all at recommended amounts. RO water that is PH at about 6.5 and I change the water about ever 2 weeks or so. The pots I mostly have been using are the ones in the picture which I have seen others use on line and love them. I'm thinking maybe these pots don't allow air exchange between inner and outer pots but seems weird it would take 6-9 months for the problem to arise if this is the case. If everyone thinks it's these pots, what else would you recommend? I want something fairly decorative as they are on display and not in a plant tent. If it's not these pots, what else could be causing the lack of oxygen to the medium? Looking forward to what you guys and girls think!

I've been thinking about switching some of my Hoyas out of soil and was wondering what everyone here is using.

Are yours in soil, PON (Lechuza or homemade), LECA, bark, coco chips, or something else?

What's been working best for you? I'd also love to know if you're using self-watering pots or just regular nursery pots.

Just curious to see what most people prefer and why.

I have custody of my brother-in-law's monstera after I confiscated it when it was nearly dead. I got it in October, but the pictures 4 &5 were from February. It's only ever been growing in water, and has been very happy. It took quite a few months to initially recover, but has put out two leaves since then. The problem is, it's outgrown its current pot and I have a bag of leca that I've never used before.

My questions are: Can I / should I grow it in leca now? How do I go about doing it? If I do go with semihydro, do I keep the water level above the roots since that's what it's used to? Or do I keep the roots above the water and let the capillary action do its thing? Any and all advice and comments are much appreciated!

Ive had some plants in leca for a while now and im realizing ive never fed them any fertilizer or nutrients! Which ones do you recommend? Would prefer less amount of steps as possible so if its a one bottle mix, thats perfect :)

Only been a couple days since putting in Leca. Two Monstera Adansonii and one Alocasia (new to Alocasia so not sure what kind) All three jars foliage are yellowing. Water is below roots. Washed Leca thoroughly and cleaned all soil off roots. Is this a normal transition process? Have I done anything wrong? Is there anything I haven’t done. I use hydrogen peroxide and isopropyl alcohol for pests and cleaning (whatever it’s all called) I have not used any products on these three. Please help a homie out 🥲

What is your favourite pot for semi hydro? I am trying to increase my pot range and need some suggestions. TIA

I currently have a Pilea Peperomioides in LECA in a clear glass container. It keeps getting algae every 2 weeks in a spot it like where it gets about 3 hours of morning sun. I wish to move it to a 2 pot set up to avoid dumping and cleaning the algae off the leca constantly, as it is wearing down the main stem.

From my understanding a 2 pot set up where you put a clear pot with holes in an opaque pot to avoid algae growth. In my findings I found that people have used clear pots with holes in the bottom and pot where they have carved holes in the 1/3rd line. My question is, is it necessary to have holes in the 1/3 line if it already has holes on the bottom? I have seen some with both 1/3 and 2/3 holes, is this to make flushing easier along with the bottom holes? Can I make do with just a clear pot with holes on the bottom or is there a major difference the 1/3rd and 2/3rd holes make?

Hi all, I currently have my alocasia in a wick watering system with pon. There are some signs of magnesium deficiency (interveinal chlorosis). I currently use liquid gold leaf at 0.5ml per litre as recommended for semi hydro but I am wondering how much extra calmag to add? I have biobizz calmag but I don't want to overdo things. TIA!

Brought this guy home from a box store in dirt and let him acclimate for thirty days before moving him to semi hydro (leca and perlite)

He seemed fine at first but 2-3 weeks later and this is the result. Trying to determine if this is just an adjustment growing pain or if I'm killing him D:

I've shrunk the reservoir out of fear I was rotting him.
