Welcome to the Design matrix, the first and only public matrix for designs used from the past all the way to the modern age. This is a living Megathread, so you will see models and designs added as we come across them. If you have a model design that is not listed within the matrix and would like to have it added, please comment below with a picture of your lighter and the picture of the lighter sticker showing the model number and name.

A personal thanks to Mr. u/Reuben_Tishkoff for the massive compilation of lighters and there specific design names and model lighters, as well as to others that have helped by posting their lighters here in the group and the Facebook group.

Authentication Guides S.T. Dupont Model Design list

UPDATED 13 Jul 2024

Link to Part 2

A very special thank you to Mr. u/Reuben_Tishkoff for providing a ton of these excellent pieces and their applicable bar code and design name.

If you would like to contribute to the list, please take a photo of the lighters design above the printed label seen on the original outer box when sold.

Ligne 1 Model designs:

The S.T. Dupont staple "Diamond Head" pattern.
Commonly refered to as the "denim" model.
Commonly refered to as the "Vented" model.
Commonly refered to as the "Horizontal Lines" Ligne 1
Same as above, however in the silver version.
Another variation of the "Vertical Lines" design. This one with a flat smooth surface on the top and bottom of the lighter. Which gives it more depth and helps the design stand out.
The sister design of the "Horizontal Lines" lighter, this is commonly refered to as the "Vertical Lines" lighter desgin.
Commonly mistaken for a Gatsby, this model is usually refered to as the "deco" Ligne 1 for its styling towards that of Art Deco modeled Lighters.
Refered to as the Diamond lighter. Not to be confused with the "Diamond Head" pattern that Dupont is known for.
A limited edition "Contemporaine" design Ligne 1
Some have refered to this design as the "waterfall" or "water" design Ligne 1
Another design that is confused for the "Diamond Head" Design. However, this design has a small break of rectangles to seperate the larger squares.
This is refered to as the "Long Lines" variation.
The "Long Lines" design in gold

Opinions Every Solid Gold Jacket Ligne D Design

I have tried to archive every solid 18k gold jacket Ligne D I could find
These models are based on the second generation Ligne D. On a bare brass body and lid a thick layer gold shell was attached. The roller has a plate of gold wrapped around it. The adjuster screw and filling valve are solid 18k gold. Not as solid gold as some other models that also have a fully solid lid and roller, but still a good ammount.

Picture 1. reference 17907 (based on the design and listing price I believe it belongs to the catogorie of jackets)

Picture 2. reference 17905
Picture 3. This is the identical model listed at Kirby Allison's website. In a video review Alison mentions that the lighter was unkown to the Dupont archives and possibly a unique factory item. His item is marked with 0319. The pictures show a warranty card, but the website fails to mention whether any information was written on the card.

Picture 4. reference unknown.
This is the lighter that I listed for sale on my webshop. I have not seen another one with this design as of yet. It is marked with 0144.

The markings probably refer to the production number. I'm unsure if each design was numbered seperatly or whether all ligne de solid gold jackets were numbered in one series.

If anyone has more information or more models please share!!

Opinions Inherited Lighter

I apologize ahead of time, as I’m not a “lighter” person. Recently inherited this lighter and would like to get it back to a functioning state, I’m just unsure where I should go. I’m located in the twin cities msp area and would prefer not to have to ship it, so do I just go to a local jeweler?
I was also told this subreddit would help authenticate it as well? I’d appreciate any other information anyone could provide on this lighter as well. TIA!

Can anyone identify this vintage S.T. Dupont Ligne 1?
I recently acquired this vintage S.T. Dupont Ligne 1 lighter. It has brown Chinese lacquer panels and a red Japanese signature on the front. The serial appears to be 146S.
I’m trying to determine:
Is the red signature factory original or a later customization?
Does anyone recognize the artist or the Japanese characters?
Approximate production year?
Estimated collector value?

Looking to buy WTB ST Dupont lighter

Hi all, I'm after a vintage lighter in the £150–200 range. Not fussed on brand — gold or gold-plated would be nice but not essential. Happy to consider anything that's a genuine collectible piece rather than a modern reissue.

Would appreciate recommendations on models/brands to look out for at this budget, and any tips on what to check for authenticity/condition before buying. Also open to hearing where people usually source vintage lighters (auction houses, specialist dealers, etc.) rather than generic marketplaces.

Thanks!

General Discussion Looking for technical information on Soubreny and Urban Hammer

Hi everyone!

I'm becoming really interested in the Soubreny and Urban Hammer models, but I have very little hands-on experience with them and I'd love to learn more about how they're built and how they work.

I have a few technical questions:

  • Is the upper mechanism of the Soubreny essentially the same as a Ligne 1? Externally it looks very similar, but I'd like to know if the internal mechanism and parts are actually shared.
  • What about the Urban Hammer? Does it share any mechanical parts or design with the Ligne 1, or is it a completely different construction?

Regarding the gas valve:

  • As far as I know, both models use the blue gas refill. If the valve ever needs replacing, how is it removed?
  • Are replacement valves still available anywhere, or are there compatible alternatives?

More generally, I'd love to collect as much technical information as possible about these two models:

  • service manuals
  • exploded diagrams
  • parts lists
  • repair guides
  • videos showing disassembly and servicing
  • any historical or engineering information

I'm particularly interested in understanding what these models have in common mechanically with the more familiar Ligne 1.

Thanks in advance—I'd really appreciate any knowledge you can share!
