Institutions Pull Back While Price Grinds Higher — Then Something Happens the Data Hasn’t Caught Up To
Previous Thesis
Last week we concluded that the market had flipped from a momentum-fueled short squeeze into late-stage distribution. Open Interest was contracting even as price pushed to local highs, and neither Asset Managers nor Leveraged Funds were showing any appetite to sponsor the advance with fresh capital. The core question heading into this week was whether that hollow, low-liquidity advance would keep grinding sideways inside the balance, or whether the first real crack, a liquidation break, was closer than it looked.
Updated Thesis
The market is no longer simply distributing sideways. It is climbing on progressively thinner institutional support, at least through the window this data can see. Every category of professional money that could have used this week’s advance as a reason to add risk instead used it to reduce or hedge it. Separately, and not yet explained by any of this data, price extended much further after Tuesday on an idiosyncratic single-name catalyst. The question heading into next week isn’t just whether institutions sponsor a breakout, but it’s whether they respond at all to a rally that, so far, has had nothing to do with broad positioning.
