Broke, Not Lazy.

Broke asf rn 😭 Holidays got me realizing comfort really be killing me ngl.

Lowkey think the mindset of "there's nothing I can do" is what keeps most of us stuck. Me? I'll do damn near anything that's honest work. I ain't too proud for it either. I've cut bushes, painted walls, I've walked dogs.done random jobs people call "uncivilized"... money doesn't care about your ego.

I just wanna earn something I can call mine instead of asking family every time. So if y'all got anything that needs hands, hmu. Treat a fella 😂🤝

Learning Kinyarwanda - is there a lot of material for studying around the web?

Hi there guys! I am a humble fella from Europe! I don't wanna give too much info on where I am from but my native language is of a Balto-Slavic branch!

For years, I was so intrigued by your country, way of life, cities, and culture! (In a respectful way of course!!!)

At the moment, I major in English language and literature, and I like to learn languages in general! I want to take it easy and slow, but my main concern is, is there a good amount of learning resources for Kinyarwanda for English speakers??

I wanna know what i should expect if i start the learning journey soon!! I hope I don't sound too entitled, i just felt like it is very beneficial to consult with the people who may speak the language first!! THANKSSS in advance !! Have a great dayyyy!

VisitRwanda “controversy”

Well i’ve been against posting politics on here, but i promise this is the only time i’m ever going to…

HRW “Human Rights Watch” has made a long post on their X account criticizing Aston Villa and other European teams for their partnership with VisitRwanda, citing human rights violations, the war in Eastern DRC, etc…

It lead me to question why do they never oppose aid money going to similar “regimes” in the similar fashion?

Does VisitRwanda represent the self-dependence that aid money doesn’t?

Let’s discuss?

Finally someone is trying the regulate house and land Brokers (ba komisiyoneri)

There is an association called the Rwanda Association of Real Estate Brokers (RWAREB), whose goal is to create a manageable network of brokers. They currently have internal regulations, but since these are not yet backed by law, brokers face no official penalties for non-compliance.

Recently, RWAREB began collaborating with Rwanda's National Land Authority (NLA) to establish legal regulations that will hold brokers accountable for misconduct.

The Director General of the NLA, Marie Grace Nishimwe, informed The New Times that these new laws will be released this coming September.

One requirement being introduced is broker certification. However, my concern is that if implemented incorrectly, this could simply become a revenue-generating scheme for authorities rather than delivering real value to consumers. Additionally, some people worry that once brokers are required to hold certificates, they will double the fees they currently charge.

What's the worst money problem you've had travelling in or out of Africa?

Card declined abroad? Stuck sourcing dollars before a trip? Wired a deposit to an operator and held your breath? Sent money home that arrived late and lighter?

I'd like to hear what actually happened; what broke, and what you did instead.

One line is fine. The workarounds people invent are usually more revealing than the problem itself.

*Disclosure: I work on cross-border payments. Not selling anything, no links; just want real stories rather than assumptions.*

How is the Kinyarwanda word “nshya” actually pronounced?

For example, does the word "inkweto nshya" sound different than the stand alone word "nshya"? I have been learning Kinyarwanda primarily through reading based material, which is helping my vocab and my ability to read subtitles, but my pronunciation needs a lot of work.

Where to go in your free time in Kigali?

I work remotely so my week is pretty much the same thing every day. Work, gaming, some TV, trying out random restaurants, and such. I mean it’s fine but honestly it’s gotten boring and i feel like I’m missing out on stuff.

What else is there to do around here? And where do people actually go to meet new people? Working from home gets kinda lonely and i don’t really have a way to meet anyone outside my screen, lol!

How do you guys build your social circles in Kigali?

Hello, I'm a foreigner living in Rwanda and currently looking for good driving schools. If there's anyone who'd be down to share how they got their license, how long it took and around how much they paid that'll be great :).

Discussion culture

Hello Everyone,

I have a question concerning something that I - as a foreigner living in Kigali since a few years - have repeatedly observed in conversations with Rwandan in person and here on Reddit.

It’s fair to say that there is a narrative of Rwandas extraordinary developments and successes since the 90s that is being propagated into a very positive public image of today’s Rwanda - both in the country as well as domestically. Often to such an extent that these are being overly exaggerated.

I have for example had many discussions in Rwanda where people asked me what I make of Rwanda today and how it compares to other places I have visited - not necessarily out of curiosity but because people are looking for confirmation of their opinion or views. When confronting them with another narrative, people often respond in a very defensive way and directly dismiss the other persons opinion.

I’m seriously curious - where is this coming from? As has someone else observed this too?

Can someone tell me why e-kash often doesn't work?

When I saw the announcement about e-kash I thought it was revolutionary but as I keep on trying to use the technology it often doesn't work.

I don't know if the system was rushed for public use or the usual method they use of testing the system while people are actively using it.

Rswitch or whoever it concerns please do something

What do salon/Spa owners in Rwanda actually struggle with the most?

I've been talking to salon and barbershop owners around Kigali over the past few months, and I noticed many of them still manage appointments, commissions, inventory, and payments using notebooks or WhatsApp.

It made me curious.

If you own a salon, barber shop, spa, or even work in one:

-What's the biggest headache in running the business?

-Is there any software you currently use?

If you don't use one, what's stopping you?

-What's one thing that would genuinely make your day easier?

Thanks!

Where are the trash cans?

I've been thinking a lot lately, 10 yrs ago there used to be trash cans everywhere, you wouldn't walk 200 m without seeing one but now you would walk more than 2 km without seeing one anywhere! It makes me wonder where the trash cans went? Has anyone else noticed?
