Hello,

Yet another translation help request, I’ve seen many of these on my searches but there seems to be an argument behind one part of what I’m trying to translate.

I’m looking to incorporate my sons name ‘Henry’ into a themed tattoo in the form of Anglo-Saxon Futhorc but cannot seem to find a consistent rune which you could use for the letter Y in modern English.

So far I’ve come across this for the HENR part: ᚻᛖᚾᚱ
Just missing the end.

Any help would be appreciated!

Translation request Correct interpretation?

I'm using the attested Old Norse phrase maðr minn ('my husband/my man'). For a historically plausible long-branch Younger Futhark inscription in a Viking Age style, would ᛘᛅᚦᚱ ᛘᛁᚾ be the preferred carving, or would you expect a different spelling? Please explain why

It's my first tattoo, so I want to make sure it's right. I made the translation that sounds right, but I want it double checked. I remember reading somewhere that runes don't double the way English letters do, but now I can't find the reference...

Question (general) Meanings of runes

Post image
41 Upvotes

I know it seems stupid, cause I see everywhere that the runes are the alphabet essentially and giving them meaning is like saying A means apple and Z means zebra, but I'm curious on it still, is it right to be curious or should I just accept that they're just letters?

Translation request Help with runes

Hi all,
I found out at a later age I was adopted from Norway, long story for another time maybe.
However I had 4 cats named after Norse gods due to the fascination with Norse mythology, the first two cats were named before I even learned I was adopted.

Loki, Odin, Freyr and Njörðr (the last is even spelled like this in his official passport to mess with people that want to call him by his name)

Unfortunately I have had to let Loki go earlier this week.
Since he has been with me for 17 years and I’m not ready to let him go, I want to get a tattoo with his name.
But the internet is a vast place full of misinformation and tattoo artists will use that for information and inspiration.
Therefor I’m looking for the correct way to spell their names in runes.
I’m thinking of making the correct spelling in either the tattoo or make a bind rune of it
Any help would be really appreciated.

Question (general) Elder Futhark help

Hi! I’m new to runes and still learning Elder Futhark.
Could someone help me check if these words are correct?

ᚺᚨᛁᛚᚨᛉ — HAILAZ
ᚺᚨᛁᛚᛃᚨᚾ — HAILJAN

I’m trying to understand if they can be used for the meanings “whole/healthy/restored” and “to heal/make whole”.

Also, I’m interested in writing them vertically. Is there a traditional way to arrange Elder Futhark runes vertically, or is it just a modern design choice?

Thanks for any help!

I’d like an extra word on the runes. They’re supposed to say strongest of all men, or something similar to it, it’s sorta old. I would like if people can confirm that it does indeed say that. As for the second image I’d like an opinion if it’s a possibility that this was something that could’ve been carved historically accurately in the Viking era, if no, could you guys help me find a historical reenactment Thor fishing for jormungandr tattoo? And these tattoo’s are going on my forearm. THANKS!
I was also curious before I get off track if the uruz aurochs tattoo idea would be good?

Contemporary rune use Need help with a runic dilemma

I want to know what the community thinks on a rather tricky topic. I am currently working on starting my own Etsy business selling handmade copper jewelry, mostly with a Nordic style or theme to them.

One of the things I want to sell are rings with single runes engraved on them. The issue is there's one rune in particular that I'm not sure if I should allow as an option, that being Sowilo. Because Sowilo has been used by a particularly distasteful organization for quite a while now I feel that it could be taken the wrong way if I sell jewelry with it engraved.

At the same time I know the Nordic community at large is trying to reclaim the runes and scrub the evil associations from them.

So the tldr is, should I use Sowilo or should I not?

Translation request Accurate rune usage

I'm planning on getting a tattoo, and I would like it to be as accurate as possible beforehand.

I've done a bit of digging online, so I know singular rune usage wasn't really a thing and that modern words don't often translate well in runic, so I've tried to find a period-correct word to use the runes with.

Can anyone shed any light on whether this is correct?

Contemporary rune use Runic Misappropriation

I'm in the early stages of creating a runic version of an excerpt from the Prose Edda (which was naturally, written in the Latin Alphabet). I hope to have this as a tattoo to go along with my Sköll and Hati tattoo — a tale I'm very fond of.

Although I could of course just go with the direct excerpt in Latin alphabet Old Norse, I feel like getting a tattoo in runes carries a bit more gravitas.

My concern is with the more contemporary and very unfortunate association runic writing can sometimes have with extremist/hate groups.

To be clear, the phrase/runes I am considering are in no way, shape, or form associated with any extremist ideology. They are a direct excerpt from the Edda — converted to runes. My runes would be totally explainable and defensible.

I'm just curious to get some perspective from any of you here who deal with runes on a more regular basis: what is the frequency that the average lay person associates runes with racism/extremism?

I'm looking to get a tattoo of this on my hand. I've done (what I feel) is adequate research on the phrase and its content but, I'd like to get real world confirmation on what it says.
