Hi all! My boyfriend has a 6&1/2 yr old male Rottweilerb(a smaller boi, he's 75 lbs) and the dog has been anxious as all get out since we started dating 5 years ago. He adopted Lou (the doggo) at about age 1 yr old (guessing)..

Lou was a surrender: he had been adopted and a year later the owners brought him back to the breeder, who places the ad for the dog with just a rehoming fee.

Lou has always been scared. He didn't know what anything was when my partner got him: stairs, traffic comes, wooden walkway/bridges (any kind of walkway going over water- even small ones).

He used to "fear nip" at people on occasion (not cut, just if he got a bad vibe in the first year or two he'd do a "nip" thing if they tried to pet him, not a bite, not touching skin, but in their direction so they knew "don't touch me, not cool!". He has become very well adjusted since my boyfriend adopted him and hasn't done that in 3-4 years. He lets random people walk up and pet him now even though it makes me slightly nervous, he picks up on our vibe so I act cool and calm and it hasn't been a proven in years and years.

But he is ANXIOUS. Like he pants all the time. He cries when my boyfriend leave the house or to get in the bedroom, so we have started letting him sleep on a second bed on the floor of the bedroom. My boyfriend literally holds his paw when we watch movies. The constant panting drives me a bit nuts tho, ngl.

I'm concerned because he doesn't know to relax around other dogs and cats... But he has coexisted with both. My boyfriend has another dog (a roommate) the first year or so and he lived with my 2 cats for 3 years or so. He clashes with large breed male dogs at times. But cats have been fine in the past.

Edit: And I am getting lots of comments on prey drive. Yes this was a concern but Lou has NEVER bitten or attacked ANY ANIMAL EVER. Not cats (that he lived with), not the damn mouse that was in our house (ughhh!), never ever ever attacked any animal. He has been attacked by a male dog once but did not bite the other dog.

So here is my current situation: I just adopted a kitten. I'm a cat person. Lou is very interested in the kitten. We have only let them be around each other supervised. Lou did fear nip on the kitten's direction over after the cat ran up to him, hissed and swatted him in the face and drew blood but he didn't get his mouth anywhere near the cat. This was when my boyfriend let them be alone together in a room on day 3...

And... now the kitten has gotten bigger, it has been about 2-3 weeks. And the kitten wants to play with Lou soooo much. Lou just has no chill. He hasn't nipped again... Even though kitten did attack him one other time. He just can't stop panting and staring the kitten down when in the same room (I'm usually holding the kitten).

If Lou would chill the kitten would be playing with him constantly. I would settle for peaceful coexistence and Lou not caring about the cat like he did with my last cats. Could just be because this one is tiny and new.

The kitten is Toki Wartooth (from Metalocolypse).

Toki just wants Lou to chill.

What can I do to make Lou calm down other than positive reinforcement when Lou behaves around him? We have been using training commands ("back it up, down, look at me, stay") and those work well, Lou is well trained by my boyfriend (he was a terrified pup when my boyfriend got him and he put a lot of work into training, he has experience at training big dogs but knows very little about cats).

Any suggestions??? We've been considering taking Lou in to see if he may benefit from SSRI's or doggy anxiety meds. We've considered this for years.

I've read that trazadone helps a lot with anxiety in large dogs. Anyone have any experience with this? It wouldn't just be for Lou and Toki to get along though, This was the catalyst to an issue we have been discussing for years: we want Lou to be less anxious in general and if medication would be helpful for his mental health, we may want to try it.

Tips and recc's, shared stories, etc, would be great!

** Edit: My boyfriend insists Lou does not have a prey drive or if he does, he has not seen it, and he says he isn't exhibiting a prey drive towards this kitten (I know he wasn't with my cat who died of heart failure). And my boyfriend has raised some very large (often called "aggressive breed") dogs and has absolutely seen a prey drive in action, he has some stories of former dogs that shocked me, being a cat person).

They’re the cutest together and of course it’s all under supervision. Aurora is absolutely enamored by Sirabi, whilst Sirabi wants Aurora to fear her, it’s hilarious to watch!

This is Max I rescued him when he was about 2 years old and he’s only part Rottweiler but I hope he’s welcome. I got his DNA tested and he’s 52.6% Rottweiler 20.4% English shepherd 15.5% Australian shepherd and 11.5% miniature Australian shepherd. He’s about 6 years old and 80lb.

It was pretty obvious he had been mistreated when I got him. When I was leaving the shelter he followed me to the truck probably cause I had a big bag of the food he had been eating but when I went to help him into the truck he just showed his teeth so the person there who was used to him helped him in then it took me 2.5hrs just to get him out of the back of my truck when I got home. He was so skinny you could see his ribs and he was scared whenever I would move my hand he would get low to the ground and lean away but he has come such a long way at least with me and people he really knows. He is the biggest needy baby and thinks he’s 10lb and tries to fit in your lap if there’s the smallest spot there. I hate that he was abused previously because he’s such a baby with me but I can’t trust him around people he doesn’t know or dogs. I can’t let strangers pet him and if he’s going to be around strangers he has to have a muzzle on. I have a fenced in back yard and always take him out on a leash because he will climb the fence and I don’t want him to bite anybody or somebody else’s pet. The worst part is he really wants to love people he will run up and sit beside somebody and want them to pet him but once they do he gets this look and I can tell he isn’t comfortable anymore and if I don’t call him to me he will try to bite when they take their hand off him. At the vet I have to hold him while they do anything to him but even after they’re done trimming his nails or whatever if I let go and they’re on the ground on sitting down on something he will run over and want them to pet him and love on him. He’s such a sweetheart and big baby I wish I could take him places with me. I’ve tried training with multiple trainers. Not really any point in this post I just wanted to share my best friend.

My rottie is 2 & is supposed to take 2 allergy pills daily. He's been taking them fine for months in cream cheese.

On Saturday he had to take his Trifexis. He HATED it but I ultimately got him to take it with pork chop.

When I tried to give him his normal allergy meds in cream cheese later that day he refused it & he has refused EVERYTHING I've tried since the trifexis betrayal. I think this was the 4th day of him avoiding it.

I tried to just kinda get it down his throat but I'm awful at it & I can't see doing that twice a day forever.

Do you have any foolproof tips or foods yours never turns down? I've tried liverwurst, sandwich meat, chicken, different cheese, meatballs, canned food, & hot dogs.

Any advice?

My husband found a Rottweiler puppy on the side of a highway on his way home from work last week. No collar, no microchip and we called animal control and all animal hospitals, posted online and no one is claiming her. She's a sweet girl, vet says about 3mos old. That being said we're considering having her join our family. When she was found she was covered in urine so I don't think she was ever properly cared for and doesn't understand that outside is for potty. She doesn't have any cues that we can pick up on either, just seems to start going to the bathroom. I'm setting 20m timers and taking her to the same spot, rewarding her when she goes but it doesn't seem to be fully clicking. She's already got sit, down, come figured out so I know she's really smart. Also already crate trained. She is good aggressive though. Any tips or YouTube channels you recommend?

Clover has a daughter Audrey and when I go anywhere of course they are there with me. If I go INTO a place and stay more than 3-4 mins Audrey with bip the horn if I ignore her she will bip it twice and if I still do not appear she lays on it… the doors and windows were just a prelim.. ha
They have taken the turn signal out .the drivers visor , and one time hit the windshield so hard it had to b replaced. I was standing RIGHT THERE! That’ll teach me. Gosh I love them. Another thing they do is when in a parking lot Audrey lays very quietly down below the window and waits… some unsuspecting person just walking by but close enuf in her estimation and UP she comes and the deep rrroarrr and intense jumping at the window about gives people heart attacks . Then she will look at her dad and I always see that he is grinning and enjoying every second of her show. I on the other hand try to get her to know that yelling is totally not nice…. I am her fan ( shhhhh)

is all this normal? as she’s my first pup. sometimes she will walk with me but 70% of the time she lays down or pulls back to sit down

This was my baby, Remi. She was with us since I was 6, she was like my sister. When she was like 9, lumps started appearing on her. The vet tested them, and said they were just normal lumps Rotties get when they're old. Well, fast forward a few years, and they kept appearing. I was very nervous on that, but my mom said not to worry, the vet said they're normal. I wish I would've listened to my gut, but I brushed it off as my hypochondria. Fast forward again to April of this year. She wasn't eating her food, to the point she would only eat rice and freshpet, and she was losing weight rapidly. We booked a vet appointment for May 9th to see if it was a stomach bug. The morning of that day, she was lethargic, and couldn't walk too well on her own. On the ride to the vet, she fell between the seats, and couldn't get up. At the vet, she failed all the tests, and the vet said she was in late stage cancer. She was extremely dehydrated, experiencing near-total organ failure, and likely would've died within the next few days. My mom chose to put her down right then, at 12 1/2. The second photo is her at the vets office on her last day.

If we would've just taken her into the vet instead of brushing off the lumps as the same thing as the other ones, she might've been able to be saved, she might still be here.

The moral of the story: if you're stressed about something with your rottie, never hesitate to take them into the vet. It might just save their life. Unfortunately, we had to learn that lesson the hard way.

I’ve posted sweet Dio in here before asking for advice in terms of service work and I just wanted to follow up with some cute photos and a quick bit of information. Dio and I have been working with an AMAZING set of trainers and we are locked in and have made HUGE improvements! They say he’s a good candidate for the work I’d like him to do but I know it’s still a possibility for him to flunk, so we do have the thought of doing bitesports and/or protection if that’s the case so he still has a job.

Hi everyone! I have a 1 year old rottie male who is 90% of the time a good boy and 10% of the time has issues.

We have been dealing with resource guarding issues since we got him, but not the usual food or toy guarding. He only guards random items that he deems high value (ie; remote, shoe, sunglasses, trash) and the only thing that has worked for training is ‘trading’ him with a high value treat tossed away from him and the item. Usually this means grabbing whipped cream and putting a small amount on his food and then he drops the item and walks away so we can calmly grab the item and end the interaction.

We started doing this method after he bit the crap out of me when I grabbed a friends shoe from him and realized it was much safer for him and us to make him walk away from the object and see that we are not just taking his stuff, we’re trading with him for a higher value treat.

My question is, will a trainer be able to teach us anything different or is this method something to work on forever?

(sorry for long post, I tend to over explain about him because he really is such a good boy outside of the 10% of guarding)
