In 2020, Nevada voters passed Question 6, requiring 50% of our electricity to come from renewable energy by 2030. Six years later, NV Energy projects it will fall short of that target. The reason? Data center demand.

NV Energy’s 2026 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), the blueprint for what energy infrastructure Nevada builds over the next several decades, includes new solar and battery storage. BUT… It also includes 1,200 MW of new gas-burning power plants. This is driven largely by data centers that NV Energy projects will account for 64% of Nevada’s electricity by 2046.

Every gas plant built today locks us ratepayers into fuel costs tied to global markets Nevada can’t control. And that’s why the IRP deserves scrutiny before regulators at the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada (PUCN) approve it.

Nevadans showed up to say so. In Reno, the PUCN eliminated the evening session, cutting off daytime workers from speaking up. In Las Vegas, people waited outside in triple-digit heat for nearly two hours to be heard.

The PUCN’s general counsel responded by saying, “Those consumer sessions are not evidence. The comments made by customers during consumer sessions, they're not sworn in under oath. They're not subject to cross-examination.”

Our energy bills and our lived experience are evidence. Nevadans showed up to the Reno hearing in the middle of a weekday, the only option after the PUCN cut the evening session. We deserve respect—and that deserves more than dismissal.

I was at St. Vincent's recently in the late afternoon/early evening. I heard the AC go off. It started to get really hot. I have a health condition where I get very sick in the heat, so I joined the line of customers waiting to check out.

When I asked at the front what had happened to the AC, I was told it was management's decision to intentionally turn off the AC to "sweat them out" - that is, to make the customers leave.

I thought about calling management, but I guarantee you that will do nothing.

The SPCA thrift store also gets customers to leave by making the environment uncomfortable - they have some kind of loud alarm/siren thing (I can't recall exactly, as I stopped going because of it) that starts going off towards closing.

St. Vincent's and the SPCA Thrift Store management should absolutely learn to treat people with respect. You don't "sweat them out" or blast noise to make them leave.

Also, to people who say "well there are a lot of homeless people there" - not having a home does not put a person into a category of another species who doesn't feel discomfort or deserve respect. Smh.

To clarify, I knew that the store was closing by the end of July. However, online sources said that they would close on the 31st. But also, Gus (from the Jimmy Beans Wool store, hopefully got his name right) told me a while back that they’re supposed to vacate the building by the end of July, which would mean they would close down within the last 2-3 or so weeks. I lost all my yarn needles so I headed there today to see if they were still open so I could snag one for a crochet project, as well as see what was left in the store.

I will miss being able to buy lots of yarn from small brands and being able to look and feel the different textures of yarn to see if I wanted to buy it or not. I also really loved their sale section because I got to get a lot of delicate and rare yarns that were not always acrylic for less money. It was also pretty close to my house.

I just wish JBW made an official closing announcement on their social medias about the exact closing date of their physical store. If I knew when they were closing, I would’ve bought more of their stock for my yarn stash 😭 but oh well. You will be missed, JBW Reno. Buying from their online shop is not the same as buying in store.

tl;dr: My favorite yarn store closed without an exact closing date and announcement and it will never be the same.

The parking at the Halcyon has been a mess, no doubt about it. But they claim to have tagged 150 vehicles that don’t have a parking permit. However, I talked to multiple residents who were tagged even WITH a parking permit. My theory is most of these tags are from one bedroom units that have multiple cars because the Halcyon only allows one parking permit ($25 a year to park in an open space) per one bedroom unit. However, I pay for a carport because we have two vehicles in our one bedroom. Now, they are not even allowing that. That’s despite them telling me a year ago, in writing, I could rent a carport for the second car. It’s such a frustrating situation. All because they didn’t build enough parking.

The fact the Reno mods feel comfortable removing all the posts about the cat abuser and killer who was arrested and is now released and likely back in Reno, is disturbing and incredibly tone deaf.

It makes me question the integrity of not only the people running this subreddit, but the subreddit in general. This is something people need to be aware of. And this is something that needs to be discussed. Not something to ignore and shun.

He killed cats. That is a fact. He was arrested. That is a fact. That is not a witch hunt. It even makes me wonder if one of the mods might know him personally.

Do better ya'll. And everyone else, watch out for this psycho when adopting out animals. Animal abusers never just stop at animals. It almost always extends toward hurting humans.

Edit: Removing these posts, regardless if the abusers name is shared or not, is perpetuating harm. We have a right to discuss these matters as citizens of this city. And people who may not know about this otherwise. Removing these posts could put more animals and humans in harms way with this individual. It's reckless and careless.

After a recent ownership and management change starting July 1st. I’m concerned about the direction my apartment community is heading. When I moved in, this was an affordable housing option. Now, without major renovations or improvements in the past 2 years, it appears to be shifting toward a premium pricing model.

My rent moving in was advertised at $985, which with my lease renewal this year, it only went up $25..

However for new residents, they are advertising at $1600-1700 for the same apartment.

A property does not become premium overnight just because ownership changes. Long term residents deserve stability and transparency when rent increases could create financial hardship and force people out. There are seniors here on fixed incomes.

My lease isn’t up until February 2027, so I don’t know what kind of increase I’ll see, if any. My concern is that the property is being marketed as something more “premium” than it actually is, without major improvements to justify the change.

With no rent control laws in Nevada, what can I actually do besides move? It would be very inconvenient I’m 3 minutes from work and I like the location.

So I made the decision today to hike there and spend the night before I head home. I'm a person right now with absolutely nothing to lose, and it feels like I have a big world all to myself. I'm not even going to wait for an ID, because why? I'm just ready to be home. But I'll be damned if I leave Reno without seeing Lake Tahoe.

From there, I will train hop my way all the way back to North Carolina. And I'm going to take every single second of it in. I want to thank the lovely person who blessed me with a phone replacement. That solved 90% of my problems. You are an angel. And everyone else who has reached out and offered a helping hand. I don't care what anyone says about Reno, I've met some of the best people I've ever met in my life here. Thank you all so much. This city will always have a place in my heart. Got about 30 tires I need to have someone dispose of. Who is the cheapest option in town?

Anybody have any positive experiences with booking a Lyft or Uber from RNO to Kings Beach area? Wondering if I can rely on that or just need to rent a car. Unfortunately, my flight lands after all the buses/shuttles to Kings Beach stop running.

Looking to get composite bonding done on my front teeth as I have a small chip and would like to change the shape a little bit. Any recommendations for this? Not looking for veneers or anything like that.

I feel lucky to live in Reno, where we get to enjoy art, mountains, and the outdoors. I feel so happy to see the community coming out to enjoy music, good vibes, and community. July has been amazing so far.
