Looking for a job is soul-draining

You may (or may not) have seen my post where i vented i could not get a entry-level job in the care sector.

I got a interview at a local care home! And its above minumum wage (only by like £1 a hour, but we take ws where we can get them).

Persistance is key!

So I’m listening to my wife, a doctor in research, go through an AI interview… It is so painful. Like AI constantly interrupts, goes on random rants about something random about something my wife previously said, then go on a really long pauses… How the FUCK does a company expect to get great talent with this kind of experience?! This is insanity! FFS she has a PHD and you’re making her talk to a BOT??

Sorry I’m ranting I’m just so furious for her. It’s painful to hear and it’s just so infuriating.

We won't use this to influence our decisions.

So last year I had gotten through two rounds of interviews and a take-home assignment with one of the largest employers in my area - a post-secondary institution. I got a verbal offer and a start date, conditional on a reference check. 24 hours after speaking to one of my references, just four days before I was supposed to start, my offer was rescinded.

I assumed that it must have just been horrible luck and the school losing the budget for the position, but as many of you guessed when I first posted here about it, I eventually discovered that one of my references was being two-faced and sabotaging me. Essentially, I was doing five peoples’ jobs for them (web design, graphic design, email marketing, web development, website moderation), they fired me when deadlines started to suffer when my dog died, and then they tried to replace me with an overseas web developer. I guess they didn’t realize that still left four more people worth of jobs not being done, and so she had to pick up all that slack. I guess that made her resentful, but she didn’t show it outwardly, and I ended up staying on the Board of Directors at this non-profit for two more years - just no longer doing any active website work. I thought we had a good relationship.

Anyway, when I learned she was sabotaging me, I tried to reach out to the school’s HR to request what exactly was said through FIPPA, but they said that they don’t need to voluntarily comply because those notes were labour-related documents. So then I said “okay, understood, but really I’m just trying to figure out whether I’m on some sort of blacklist because of this reference’s testimony,” and then the head of HR said “I can tell you that you’re not on a blacklist here.”

But that is not consistent with the fact that when I applied to this school the first time, I got an interview within two days, but now I have applied to like 8 more roles at the school over the past 9 months (none as perfect as the first one, but still ones that I am easily qualified for) and haven’t heard back even once.

After being lied to by this reference that I trusted immensely, I kinda just assume that this HR lady was lying to me too and I am indeed blacklisted or something 🙄

So am I just locked out of ever working at one of the few large employers in my area? Is there anything I can do, or just move on?

This job market is going to be a very hard, difficult, life altering, stressful and life set back for many many people in their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s.

Not having a job means, not being able to afford life simplest of things — rent, food, transportation. Not to mention, relationships.

How am I, 28M, unemployed, suppose to simply live life, I have a Masters degree in Algorithmic Trading, and I cannot find a job.

There is no work life balance, it’s called move back home in with family members and find a job. Relationships, marriage, homes, cars, groceries, life, is completely thrown out the window.

This is only the beginning, and remaining positive has become a stronger battle than finding a job.

Not a joke btw. I literally started drawing furry art, or any other kind of art to make a living.
Genuinely, how can i get a job. I have no job experience but i have a Bachelor’s and master’s in Computer Engineering and data science, plus I have built several full-stack apps, and did client work.
The thing is that I want to get an actual job so i feel more secure to actually move out and live comfortably.

This is in the USA. It's part time at 20 hours per week.

I took a five day break from job searching, I'm on day 2 back on the wagon and I'm already depleted.

I'm fed up of seeing one one or two graduate jobs in a sea of Principal, Senior, Lead, Manager titles. I'm fed up of the wild goose chase that young people are constantly given, now being told to networking. But people in jobs don't want to speak to graduates, they want to get on with their work. And if they do respond they just tell you to use the website contact form, which is just a form of purgatory. And if I hear one more time that I just need to keep my chin up and not get discouraged, I'm gonna lose it.

It feels like I've done everything right, I got two degrees, I got experience. Now I'm being told to network and develop my skills which sure I'll do but I don't know how much that will actually improve my chances. It just seems like the latest advice for young people is to place blame and responsibility on them rather then the job market.

Anyway, hope all your job searches are going better than mine.

It feels like a betrayal the interview went really well and still got rejected.

It's very disappointing.

This is the fifth time in 90 days.

Also, I got another company's email yesterday to schedule an interview, I wonder if I should or not.

What I hate the most is this template rejection email with no feedback.

Honestly I tried solving this problem in 2024-25 but the recruiter's ego came in between and it failed miserably.

Is anyone else having a rough time getting a job in computing/tech let alone an interview? I know I’m not the best candidate, but I finished my masters in cpe and 2 bachelors in cs and math with a >3.9 gpa. Also have some projects/research, including some simulation engine and kernel work, which I atleast thought was good enough for an entry level candidate. I’ve since had a career advisor from my university, ATS resume software, and some LLMs take a look at my resume, all approved. The only issue is I didn’t intern during my degree. Am I screwed because of this? Is anyone else having a hard time? Any advice? Is PhD the new standard in computing now? At about 1200 applications without a single interview, having a hard time finding new job postings now. Feel kinda silly spending so much time, effort, and money in school just to become a fast food worker 😅

I was interviewing with a proctoring company and it was going well, until the recuiter asked me if i had any certifications.

I said I was studying for the COMPTIA+, she stopped me right there and said its against policy for proctors to be studying or have certification in exams the test takers were taking and then proceeded to say to me that the interview can no longer continue.

I didn't even get a chance to get a word in. In desperation I said I would agree not to continue studying and that this position was more a priority for me. She agreed to take it off the interview notes.

We concluded the interview and was shortly sent an email saying theyve moved onto other candidates.

How could i have been prepared for that? How could i have known that this proctor company also happens to test people who are taking COMPTIA+?

Im so confused and defeated. I just don't think its acceptable to be so cut throat in interviews like that. Especially for a low paying part time job like this one.

I remember a time when recruiters reaching out excited me, but this message sent me over the edge. How long does it take to actually add my name in the message instead of mass sending out messages blindly like this?

I interviewed with a big tech company for 2 months and 6 rounds, made it through the final round, didn’t get the job, got ghosted when I asked for feedback, and now, 2 months later, a recruiter sent me a generic linkedin message saying she saw my profile and thought I’d be perfect for the job she is hiring for, the SAME JOB I interviewed for 2 months ago. The best part is, she is the same recruiter who emailed me the rejection email.

I replied back with a nice message saying thank you, i’d still be interested if they were, blah blah. (i got laid off and need a new job.) but its like ????

Of course, 5 days post message and she hasn’t answered me.
