discussion I hate Reverb 😭
I am so upset. I have been mixing music for almost a decade, and I am not terrible. I have made some pearls from turds, but I hate reverb! It’s the only thing I’ve never ever learnt how to use on vocals; it always sounds wrong. It always makes it sound worse. I love crispy, claustrophobic, soundproofed vocal booth vocals, and reverb always makes it sound like the vocals were recorded in a tin shed. I just use delay and echo to make it not sound so dry, but sometimes I feel pressured into using reverb just because it’s a modern vocal requirement, like pitch correction! There are so many songs out there that have reverb that I love that sound so "misty", like the sound equivalent of the "mist" setting on an outdoor hose showerhead to water plants – just perfect high-end decay, but I’ve never been able to replicate it. All my audio engineering friends laugh at me and giggle behind my back because I don’t use reverb. They give me thinly disguised insults like “You need to 'reflect' on your skills a bit, huh?” An obvious reverb pun backhand insult right to my heart. 😭 If I were God, I would remove reverb from every piece of software on the planet!
