Help with detecting GOES 19

hello, sorry if this is a long post. I have been working on making an antenna to record imagining from the goes-19 satalight for some time now and I'm kinda stuck. My waterfall just has basically nothing and I'm not sure what to do. I'm gonna put a bunch of photos of my antenna as well as my data and satdump information. I have 2 things that i think could be the issue but I'm not sure. When originally building it i was very new and then ground plate i had machined i put the connector in the middle so now i have to have a wire jump from the end of the coil to the connector, also my ground plate's diameter is about 5mm too small. Could either of those be the issue? Could it be something i have to do on satdump?

5 antenas indor krakenSDR

I'm working on an RF localization project for a large stage/event area and would appreciate some advice from people with practical experience.

The idea is to install at least four antennas, one at each corner of the area, connected to a KrakenSDR system, with a possible fifth antenna placed in front of the stage if needed.

My question is this:

I understand that the KrakenSDR is primarily designed for direction finding (bearing estimation) of external transmitters. However, is it also possible to use it to locate transmitters that are inside the monitored area by combining measurements from the different antennas and triangulating or multilaterating their position?

As an example, if the monitored area is approximately 20 × 10 meters, could a KrakenSDR with a five-antenna array realistically estimate the position of a transmitter within that area with useful accuracy? Or is this beyond the capabilities of the hardware and intended processing, making it impractical?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has attempted indoor or small-area localization using KrakenSDR or similar SDR-based direction-finding systems.

Thanks in advance for any insights or real-world experience.

DIY Projects/questions Will this work work fine with my Pi 5 4GB?

I bought a NESDR Mini 2+ and I want to listen to AIS, ADS-B, ATC and PMR-446, and make a device (Using a Raspberry Pi 5 4GB) that will basically always work and have buttons on the GPIO pins that control the functions of it. But what is the best software for these frequencies, and will I need any bugger antenna than the stock one? Is there anything I should be carefull about when making it, or any suggestions? Im in Greece btw if it helps with the frequencies (if they are covered bt the NESDR)

Could I Have Damaged My RTL-SDR Blog V4

Hi everyone,

I have an RTL-SDR Blog V4, and I'm worried that I may have permanently damaged it.

On several different occasions, I transmitted with a handheld amateur radio (around 5 W) while the RTL-SDR was connected to its stock antenna. During each transmission, the SDR waterfall lit up across almost the entire spectrum due to overload.

Afterward, I was still able to receive:

- FM broadcast radio normally

- Local amateur radio repeaters without any obvious issues

However, I have never successfully received weather satellite data (NOAA in the past or Meteor). At the time I assumed it was due to my setup, but now I'm wondering whether I may have reduced the SDR's sensitivity by transmitting so close to it.

My questions are:

  1. Is a 5 W handheld transmitting near an RTL-SDR Blog V4 enough to permanently damage its front end?

  2. Since it still receives FM broadcast stations and amateur repeaters normally, is that a good indication that the SDR is probably fine?

  3. Is there any practical way (without lab equipment) to check whether it has suffered a slight loss in sensitivity?

I'd appreciate any technical insight from people with RF or RTL-SDR experience. Thanks.

Hey guys. I got my RTL SDR a week ago and its performing well. I just have a slight concern. Upon noticing today, The sdr has a slight tilt maybe on the USB Stick. Performance wise it is working. But will this be an issue ? Or is it just normal and im overthinking? I can assure it came like that and wasnt my doing.

Did I blow my SDR-USB (nooelec)

My dumbass doesnt have an antenna so I put a long wire (15ft) into the center hole of the SMA and it worked fine.

I unplugged my label maker power adapter from the wall a few feet away and then literally my SDR went from a niec AM radio music station to pure static and i cant fix it.

Did I inadvertantly EMP my sdr ;( ??

Adun 3160 usb separator

Hello fellow listeners, have anyone tried separating rtl-sdr with adum3160 usb separator?

I have seen a silver rtl sdr connected to adum on my local ham club but the person who did that was absent and they could not tell me more about that other than that it just works....

I have original v4 and a counterfeit green one - both does not work....

I have even changed the power supply to 2W but still no luck....

Any suggestions?

Hi,
I only have one SDR V3, and i need to extract ADSB and ACARS data, Is it possible with only one SDR. I am thinking of time multiplexing the SDR.
Is there any software that can fulfill my requirement?

Hardware Entry cheap SDR

Hi!

With the Blog V4 shortage, what is out there to buy? I wanna avoid high cost SDRs like HackRF, SDRPlay or AirSpy (I'm not buying in US dollar, so they are QUITE expensive in a 1:6 ratio, without tax).

I am just interested in RX, so no TX needed. What can I buy from Aliexpress? I wanna have a look on HF, VHF and UHF bands, at least.

Thanks!

DIY Projects/questions Unintended transmissions

I have a few things that I would like to share and find out if anyone else has experienced such things.

I play around with stuff. I have so many interests that I have a hard time staying with one thing long enough to become an expert. So one of those areas of interest has always been radio - from CB radios and walkie talkies as a kid, to scanners and their modifications to get more fun out of them, and now it's RTL-SDR. Specifically things that resemble TEMPEST types of transmissions. With that let me get to the first item:

  1. Has anyone noticed that if you look around in the area between FM broadcasts, and say, 200 mhz, you can pick up, at different frequencies (harmonics? Idk) the output of your computer's microphone even when it isn't active (or in use)?

  2. Has anyone here ever heard cellular conversations around 25-35 mhz when in close proximity to the transmitting device?

  3. Has anyone ever heard the output from the distributor or whatever from a vehicle as it drives around the neighborhood?

  4. Has anyone ever heard a transmission (inverted maybe) from an illegally amplified transmitter coming through speakers of a stereo that's turned off? (I live near the back of a supermarket, and one of the trucks that regularly goes back there has driven by my house twice now and his output has somehow come through my speakers of my stereo even though it's off.).

Thanks.

Troubleshooting Weather satellites reception

Hello everyone!
I bought RTL SDR blog V4 kit some time ago. I successfully used it to determine IDs of 433MHz TPMS for my car some time ago.
I had some free time and wanted to try receiving images from weather satellites. With the help of the kit antenna I did a V-dipole (~53cm arm) and tried receiving Meteor satellites signals (as I understand, NOAA are now decommissioned and do not send anything).

However, I was not able to receive anything. I tried several times. For the first time I positioned my antenna vertically from North to South on the roof of my garage. The elevation of the satellite was quite high, around ~70 degrees. But I saw absolutely no peaks neither on 137.1MHz nor on 137.9MHz. Next time, I tried putting an antenna on a wooden stick above 2m of the ground - nothing. Also tried hanging the stick up, so the antenna was around 4m from the ground - nothing too. I tried playing with the gain settings, it didn't help, I see that the overall noise level becomes higher, but no signal.

I am using satdump and sdr++. With this antenna, I can switch to ~100MHz and listen to some radio station (there is a tower withing 6-7km from me).

I live in a residential area where there are no tall building. And there were no tall trees from the side, where the satellites were passing. So there definitely was clear line of sight.

What am I doing wrong here? How can I troubleshoot it?

UPD:
Here is a screenshot from SatDump. The antenna was ~70-80cm above the ground, no coax extension. When increasing the tuner gain, only the overall noise level increases. There are some peaks, but they are always present. The same happens for the M2 4 satellite.

Live QO-100 monitoring with high stability

Hello,

Here is a link to listen to the QO-100 satellite with a frequency stability under 5 Hz after a short AFC lock.

This is highly practical for current OpenWebRX users. The waterfall is very clean and features zoom, NR (noise reduction) filter, squelch, recording, and more.

Go tohttps://on1ms.onlineand click on the "QO-100 en live" link.

GRAVES meteor scatter detection

Post image
21 Upvotes

I recently got into the RTL-SDR area, and was wondering if it is possible to catch meteor scatter using the GRAVES detector from Prague (Czech Republic) with a dipole. I also recently created a python program which takes a screenshot every time there is a change in the dB levels on the 143.050Mhz frequency, and it cought one.

The weird thing is that i recently tried catching meteors durning night, but didn't get any.

Thanks for any advice!
