Academics✏️ MA261 Summer

Upvotes

Hi,

I'm stressing out a little because I am taking MA26100 this summer and I just finished the second exam. I don't think it went very well, even with partial credit. The average on the first exam was a 59 and I got a 71 on it, but this exam I might not be so lucky and I'm really worried about my grade. Do they curve based off class averages? My homework and quiz scores are both 100% and we have the final in two weeks. I really need to pass this class as I failed it last fall and this is my second chance. I'm freaking out a bit and would appreciate any reassurance or guidance

Other Bedrail-hanging container

Upvotes

Hi all,

Last semester I found I didn't have enough room for storage, but realized that the bedrails themselves can be used as rails on which storage containers can sit.

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:7383655

So, I CAD-ed a storage container intended to hang on the rails of your bed. I've already used it in my own dorm and it works like a charm, but the only downside is that it takes some time to print and quite a bit of filament, as well as 6 hours of continuous print time. I wanted to share anyway in case people wanted to use it. The dimensions of the container are around 8x5x4 (width-height-depth). Printing instructions included. Any feedback about the design welcome.

Other Colorful Purdue Apparel?

I’m a Purdue alum (2010-2014) and I remember when the Discount Den had Purdue shirts in every color. I know now they no longer do that 😢 Is there anywhere, a site or a physical store that still sells some? I’m a teacher and it would be nice to have some colorful gear for school.

Academics✏️ TRANSFER Courses - Taking Purdue math/other courses outside Purdue - WATCH OUT

TLDR - Be careful about taking courses outside Purdue for transfer and ALWAYS ask your department FIRST if you are thinking about it, because some courses only LOOK equivalent in the transfer course equivalency tool, but really aren't.

If you take a course outside Purdue and didn't check with your department FIRST, you are rolling the dice and you might lose. Purdue DOES NOT CARE if you wasted money and time bc you didn't follow the process, and that isn't even their course, and that argument will not get the department to reconsider accepting a transfer course that faculty says isn't good enough to be accepted at Purdue.

Seriously I know students who did this and it cost real money and they still had to take it again, so don't bother. Yeah, it is expensive taking courses at Purdue esp if you don't get in-state tuition, so I get it if you have to take it somewhere else for whatever reason, but still. At least check first, meaning ASK A REAL PERSON who works for Purdue, not just another student who maybe took it before or even someone in a different department, because not every department accepts every course anyway, and the course was maybe equivalent before but not now.

Anyway, IMO a Purdue degree is valuable because it represents Purdue work, so taking courses outside Purdue unless absolutely necessary is counterproductive. And since it's a PURDUE degree, the university isn't required to accept any courses from outside Purdue at all, so if a course isn't marked equivalent, don't bother arguing with the department about it. It will just make you look bad, like you can't succeed at Purdue-level work or are trying to take the easy way out instead of actually earning your Purdue degree with hard work.

Looking lazy to your department is a dumb idea bc that's where you make your professional connections for future.

I have had a vacation planned now for a while and it lands on fall break this year. I will be missing the full week (so three extra days) as a FYE. Is this practical or am I’m going to have to miss it? Obviously I won’t know until I get syllabi.

Hey guys,

I posted a few days ago about my situation as a rising junior (i am entering my 2nd yr but graduating in 2028, so i say junior now) and how i'm a cs major trying to figure out how to optimize resume + linkedin.

Ik the CCO has a resume review so was wondering if any1 found it helpful. Also many have told me to 'optimize' my LinkedIn because sometimes recruiters click the link on your resume, I was just curious if any1 has any good online resources for linkedin optimization cuz im still super unclear on what that means. Does lawson have anything good?

Has anyone taken it? I was wondering what it looks like. Since we are only allowed to talk through the problem, does the GTA write/draw equations/circuits as I explain? Do they show you all the formulas as a comprehensive formula sheet or just the ones relevant to the problem?

Question❓ Is it still possible to get off-campus housing?

I thought I would be able to transfer but due to financial reasons I can't. Is there any chance of off-campus housing still? I know it's quite late.

Academics✏️ AAE Stats elective

i am considering adding stats 350 to my schedule. i will be taking MA 303, AAE 20401, AAE 251, MEE 200, AAE 333 + the lab.
if not, i am considering to take it spring 27 during my co-op rotation, but i read on previous posts that the exams are still in-person for the distance version. for people who took the distance version during the recent semesters, is this still true?

or should i find a stats class in a community college and transfer the credit?

Question❓ Getting second degree at regional campus

I live 15 minutes from Purdue Northwest but went to college for my first degree at Purdue Main Campus. I graduated in Art and Technology in 2023. Went into design for a bit and had some on the margins success. In the three years since graduating I’ve had work experience in machine operations and CAD but I’ve yet to establish a stable career in something that I find both fulfilling and well paying. Just one or the other. I’m heavily considering going to PNW to get a degree in computer or electrical engineering since it’s so close and so cheap and those degrees offer the best integrate my love for design and creation with stability. With some online classes before Spring, I could start then and get out in 3-3.5 years. Is PNW’s engineering program serviceable? I know it doesn’t compare to main campus in terms of rigor, but some posts make it seem like a complete disaster of a program.

Academics✏️ Incoming Freshman Questions: Class selection, professors, & next steps before BGR?

Hey everyone! Incoming freshman here trying to make sure I don't miss any important deadlines before heading to campus. I had a few quick questions about the process:

Class Selection: When do we actually get our final class schedules / when does open registration start?

Choosing Professors: Are we able to choose specific professors/sections, or does the scheduler assign them automatically?

Next Steps: Besides course requests, what are the most important checklist items or forms I need to finish before BGR starts?

Question❓ Health insurance for international students

Hii

I’m an international student coming to Purdue for a six-month research program from August 2026 to February 2027. I’ll be in the U.S. on a J-1 visa as a student intern/exchange visitor, and I’m currently looking for health insurance that meets the J-1 requirements.

I checked the insurance recommended by Purdue, LewerMark, but the plan would cost me around $817 for my entire stay. I’ve also found other J-1 insurance options that are significantly cheaper, such as Patriot Exchange, ISO, and other international student insurance plans.

Since I’m trying to keep my expenses manageable, I was wondering if anyone at Purdue has experience with these insurance providers or similar alternatives.

Is LewerMark worth the higher cost because of its connection to Purdue’s Student Health Center, or would it be better to save some money and choose another J-1-compliant insurance plan?

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences.

Question❓ Renters Insurance at Alight

I've signed a lease with Alight starting soon and wanted to know what renters insurance options are available that are low cost. In the past, they used to accepted Lemonade without any hiccups with as low as $5/month but now they have increased coverage from $100k to $250k plus two endorsements for water and animal damage (see ticked options in the image below).

I can get a lemonade insurance which satisfies first clause but not the other two. Thus, need some help here.

  1. Can anyone let me know if they have be able to verify their renters insurance successfully?
  2. What other options are there apart from Lemonade?
  3. I don't even own a pet, do I even need animal coverage?
