Guide Start Here! - Monthly FAQ thread - July 2026

Processing img zojvytk2jwie1...

This monthly thread is the place to post any questions you have, whether it's about getting started, looking for help, or sourcing things to print. As a reminder: Please read the sub rules if you haven't already.

Frequently asked questions:

Before anything - Safety first!

How to I safely handle resin?

Start with this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kHcsTG9QsM

Resin or FDM?

A very common question. Conventional wisdom says Resin for minis, FDM for vehicles and terrain. This is quite a blanket statement, and there's obviously more to the answer. FDM printers (especially the Bambulabs printers) have come on leaps and bounds since this hobby got started. FDM can now produce very respectable detail levels, although still not close to the fineness of detail that Resin is capable of.

However, Resin has some serious drawbacks in terms of safety, which means that often it's not viable for anyone with limited space, health concerns, pets, or children to worry about. FDM still has some ventilation needs, but doesn't have the toxic chemical handling aspects of resin.

Ultimately this will come down to your own circumstances and expectations from the hobby. Don't let anyone bully you with black and white answers, and likewise, don't become a fanboy of one vs the other after you've picked!

What printer should I buy?

This changes all the time as the technology advances at a rapid rate. Before posting this (extremely) common question, please take a while to do some google research yourself. Guides like this one from Tom's Hardware are a good starting point.

We also suggest spending some time in the general 3d printing subs to see the lay of the land regarding printers. There are already many great guides out there, so we won't rehash it here.

Check out r/3Dprinting, r/resinprinting and r/PrintedMinis too.

What settings should I use?

This will vary based on printer and resin. The best way to dial it in is to run exposure tests. There are many out there, check out this great in-depth video from Derek at Lychee - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtWK2hvuVr4

Most complete option - Ameralabs town or Boxes of Calibration

Simpler option - Cones of Calibration

Why did my print fail?!

Start here - https://ameralabs.com/blog/resin-3d-printing-troubleshooting-a-comprehensive-guide/

How do I support my models?

An older, but still very good series on the theory and process of supporting models is 3d Printing Pro's series of Chitubox tutorials. The tools will vary from slicer to slicer, but the core concepts are identical.

Where can I find models?

https://cults3d.com/en

https://www.thingiverse.com/

https://www.myminifactory.com/

Search engine: https://www.yeggi.com/

PSA: Do not buy STL files on Etsy. They are almost certainly stolen, and likely originally free.

Where do I find XYZ model/part/STL?

First: Do some leg work. Search the sites above, search Reddit post history, or even just google it. If it's clear that no homework has been done, your post will probably get removed (looking at you: "where do I find Space Marines?")

If you still can't find anything, please post in this thread. Starting new top level posts looking for models clutters the sub, and we try to keep that under control.

Second: Don't just ask for a source. It's far more polite to ask for a creator's name, or a search term to help you find a model, rather than just "stl?".

For those of you who have been around a while, please do your best to participate and help answer questions where you can!

Respondents: We would kindly ask that you mention the site and a keyword or two to help newcomers find files. Unfortunately, direct linking often results in unwanted attention for creators, so we do our best to shield those talented individuals who make the models we love to print!

If a file is no longer available from original sources, please do not offer DMs or alternative mirrors.

What size base do I need for XYZ?

Check out Blasted Horizons' excellent reference here.

What glue should I use for resin prints? Super glue/ CA Glue. Any brand or type will do. Plastic glue (polystyrene cement) will not work on resin. Activator helps a lot, as does a sprinkle of baking soda.

How tall is XYZ model? What scale do I print this at?

Use Eleif Photo Measure to measure the height from a photo of the model. Use the base size as the known reference dimension, which you can get from the reference mentioned above.

There's also https://minicompare.info/ which gives great side by side scale comparison.

---------------------------------------------------------

There's a huge amount of historical knowledge captured in these threads, so please contribute where you can!

WIP Going Old School

Hey everyone, newbie here.

While it's not quite finished just yet, as I'm still to add a banner, as well as apply decals and varnish; I wanted to share my Crimson Fists Furibundus Dreadnought, as designed by BigMrTong.

Definitely going to print another one of these for my Rogue Trader era Crimson Fists army at some point, as I vastly prefer this updated sculpt over the metal originals, and it has a bunch of weapon options, and no need for magnets.

As a note, the "lascannon" has been modified with a plastic barrel tip from a spare lascannon from my bitzbox- the reason being I snapped off the original tip by accident. Truly, a fate worse than death. In the end, I kinda like the look better now.

Please bear in mind that I'm horribly arthritic, and my painting isn't what it once was.

Regardless, I hope you garner some enjoyment from this!

Showcase Finished my Heroic Scale "Panzer Russ" (Panzer III) for my Guardsmen & Krieg!

Decided to make a heroic scale Panzer III after an unusually successful round with one in War Thunder. After about 3 months of designing, test prints, and iteration, I've finally taken one all the way to a finished paint job!

Design & Scaling:
I tried to keep the design as proportionate as possible while maintaining the identifying features of the Panzer III and giving it that proper grimdark Imperial Guard aesthetic. It's scaled slightly shorter than a Leman Russ, but I've been calling it the "Panzer Russ" from the beginning. (Swipe to see it next to a Rogal Dorn proxy for scale).

Painting & Techniques:
I tried a bunch of new techniques on this project:

  • Rust textures using Army Painter
  • Oil streaks & weathering
  • AK Pigments/Powders
  • 3D printed custom stencil (using a Blender boolean) for the turret numbers

The sitting Kriegsmen on the hull were pretty fun to paint too! Still working on my brush handling and paint thinning for fine infantry details, but they look great for tank scale.

Hope you all like it!

Resin print You good bro?

I was just about finished my Landspeeder for my Raptors when I decided it needed a custom base. I decided on a jungle base where the trees would act as the mounting point. However that left a huge amount of base. So instead of covering it with an enormous amount of foliage, I created a mini diorama of an Apocathery checking on a downed marine.

Obviously needs a bunch of ground texture and stuff before its paint ready. But I thought it might be fun to share this creation born of printed bits.

I call it, "You good bro?"

Hi everyone !
I’ve been having issues with my print for a couple of months now, I always have this kind of bends where the supports are.
Which make it difficult to assemble multiple part minis and vehicles.
Do any of you know Why it’s happening and what I can do to prevent that ?

Thank you in advance !

Had these files for a while and finally got around to printing them. Took about 5 days on and off around my work schedule and finally glued it all together tonight. Isn't the best quality print if I'm being honest and may do another one someday. But it also wasn't £100 in James Workshop's back pocket!

Resin: Anycubic Waterwashable+

Printer: Anycubic Photon M7 Pro

Slicer: Lychee free version

I've made sure it's levelled.

A possibly related issue: I find it extremely difficult to remove the base support from the printing plate, I can barely get my spatula under it.

FDM print Heavy tank "Oppressor"

Just finished my new FDM tank model!

I’ve been working on this one for a while and finally got it ready for printing. The model is split into 15 parts to make it easier to print and assemble, and I’ve already test-printed it on a Bambu Lab A1.

I also made two alternative parts — an alternative hatch and an alternative gun, so you can customize the look a bit.

One of my favorite details is the ratchet joint in the turret. It gives the turret a really satisfying click-click when you rotate it. 😄

Still tweaking a few things, but overall I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. What do you guys think?

Link Built a dedicated marketplace for tabletop wargaming, minis, & proxies (The Battle Bazaar) — would love your feedback!

Hey everyone,

Like a lot of people here, I’ve spent years buying, selling, and trading minis across eBay, Facebook groups, and swap threads. While those platforms work, giving up huge fee cuts to general marketplaces or digging through endless thread comments just to find a specific bit or proxy model always felt clunky.

So, we built The Battle Bazaar.

What we built into it:

  • Hobby-Specific Categorization: Filter directly by core game system, army, or 3D print designer.
  • "Most Wanted" Bounties: A live aggregate wishlist registry so sellers know exactly what models buyers are actively hunting for.
  • Seller-Friendly Structure: Designed specifically for tabletop sellers, print shops, and army liquidators.

We’re actively onboarding initial sellers and print creators right now. If you have a backlog, bits collection, or print shop, take a look at thebattlebazaar.com and let me know what features or tweaks you’d like to see added!

Hello everyone! Im looking to kitbash the Exodite box when it comes out to add bows/arrows since I feel like it fits their vibe more.

Im planning on the sniper pulling the bow back and firing, and replacing the guns with Quivers for the mage and melee specialists. Any recommendations of bits for either online? Thank you for your time!

Picture of my forest terrain im working on atm.
