The rent is too damn high! A political ally of the sheriff schedules evictions in Prince George’s — for a fee

A political ally of the sheriff schedules evictions in Prince George’s — for a fee.

Known as the ‘mayor of Suitland,’ Elsie Jacobs has gained an outsized but informal role at the sheriff’s office.

Jacobs, 85, is not an employee of the office but helps organize and schedule evictions — one of the sheriff’s primary responsibilities. She also has what she called a security detail made up of sheriff’s deputies, she said during a recent interview with The Banner.

The evictions typically happen twice per month and have been dubbed “Elsie Jacobs days” by sheriff’s deputies. In exchange for her eviction services, Jacobs said, she charges landlords a fee.

How much?

“That’s none of your business,” she said.

The arrangement raises ethical and legal questions about whether a private citizen should be profiting from government functions.

Island Essence, Yelp MD Burbs

If you're in the Maryland/DC area and looking for something different to do in August, Yelp is hosting a series of Caribbean Heritage Month events called Island Essence that look really fun.

There are three events throughout the month, including:

Triofest in La Plata with live music, vendors, Caribbean food, and wine/beer tastings.

A SpicedBlack event in Upper Marlboro where attendees get a free Caribbean bowl and hear the story behind the restaurant.

A greenhouse event at Plants Alive featuring Caribbean food and drink samples, local businesses, and live performances.

The events are free, but you do need a Yelp account, must be 21+, have a profile photo, and RSVP to be confirmed.

RSVP here: https://www.yelp.com/events/montgomery-county-island-essence-a-caribbean-experience-in-the-md-burbs?utm_source=ishare

It's also a cool way to experience what the Yelp Elite community is like if you've ever been curious.

Your Next Adventure Starts here!

Visiting Maryland or DC lately? You already know — the real magic here isn’t just monuments or crab cakes. It’s the people. Everyday Marylanders and DC residents chatting at the bus stop, swapping stories in line at the carryout, laughing with coworkers on the Metro, talking about life, work, and what it’s like living in the DMV and our neighbor states.

That same down‑to‑earth, front‑porch, “we actually talk to each other here” energy is exactly what you’ll find at our Digital Relationship Dater events. Step out of swipe mode and into a night that feels like meeting folks the way we do around here — warm, real, and full of personality.

No endless messaging, no ghosting, no “is this profile even real?” Just genuine conversation with people who live, work, and love right in your community.

Why keep scrolling when your next connection might be sitting two chairs away asking who made the lemonade?

Pick your neighborhood:

These events are for singles who want meaningful, fun, community‑centered connections — the kind that start with a smile, a joke, or a “hey, I think I’ve seen you at the farmer’s market.”

Tickets are limited to keep things cozy, intentional, and full of good vibes. Don’t wait — your next chapter might be right around the corner… literally.

Two small dogs near Henry’s Soul Cafe

Smallest one is black and the slightly larger one is white. They won’t come close and I have my large dog in the car with me. They ran into the neighborhoods by the park!

The small black one is 100% the ring leader and the white one approached, but got spooked easily.

Hate to leave them running around, but I think they’re running behind houses and I can’t find they anymore.

Working on 3D animated project that takes place around PG County. Need voice actors.

Title basically explains it. Been working on a massive project for about a year or so and I need some voice actors for the teaser trailer/actual series. I thought about just going to Fiverr or Twitter/X, but I feel that getting people from around my way would be better for authenticity sake. I'm finishing up the 3D models and I want to be able to actually to get to animating pretty soon.

Does anyone know where I can find people for this?

Complaints 🤬 Won in Court but Still Can't Recover $400 From a Computer Repair Shop in Maryland(College Park)

[Must Read!!!] I am leaving my story here because I hope no one else will ever go through what I experienced. Any advice will be appreciated.

First of all, I am a student at the University of Maryland (UMD). Last fall, my laptop LCD screen was broken. I chose to repair my laptop at this one store, just because it was cheaper out of two stores that were recommended by the Terrapin Tech. The name of the chosen computer repair shop is "Friendly" name.

When I visited the shop, the technician confidently told me that my LCD screen could be repaired. At the time I submitted my laptop for repair, the laptop would power on and display a visibly cracked image on the screen. The technician took my laptop to bring the specification of LCD panel installed in my laptop to order the LCD replacement.

When I got the laptop back, however, the situation had become worse. Instead of displaying the cracked image as before, the screen was now completely black. I asked why the screen was black.

They assured me that once the ordered LCD was installed, everything would function normally again. The technician told me to use an external monitor using HDMI cable. Since I don't have any external monitor, my laptop left untouched.

When the ordered LCD arrived, the technician replaced my broken LCD with the new one, but the screen was still completely black. I asked what was happening, and he told me that the LCD they had ordered was not compatible with my laptop and that they would order another one.

This process repeated several times.

Despite multiple attempts, my LCD was never repaired. The screen remained black throughout. At that point, I had a strong feeling that something was seriously wrong. I visited another repair shop for my inspection.

The inspection revealed that the mainboard fuse had failed and needed to be replaced with a new one.

I asked the original shop to provide at least partial compensation for this expense. Instead of investigating the problem, they refused to reimburse me for any portion of the repair cost, claiming that the mainboard fuse failure was simply the result of my bad luck and my improper use of the laptop.

The original shop reinstalled my original broken LCD and refunded the only LCD ordering costs. They never accepted any responsibility for the mainboard fuse failure.

My original problem had only been a broken LCD. By that point, I was now dealing with a failed mainboard fuse as well.

I later had the mainboard fuse replaced at another repair shop, which cost me approximately $400.

What I still do not understand is why the original shop insisted that this was entirely my fault and that I should bear 100% of the cost. I never received a technical explanation, objective evidence, or supporting data.

Their response was always the same: they did nothing wrong, and I was responsible for everything.

I decided to pursue legal action(lawsuit).

The hearing took place in February. The owner of the shop didn't appear. Ultimately, after reviewing my evidence, the judgment was entered in my favor, and I was awarded compensation from the shop for the cost of repairing the mainboard fuse.

I then attempted to collect the judgment using the bank information for the shop that I had been able to obtain. However, I was informed that the bank account information I had was insufficient and that the funds could not be recovered. I spent considerable time researching collection options and even consulted attorneys. In the end, I learned that I could not collect the judgment using the bank information available to me, and any other banking information was not publicly accessible.

I filed a second lawsuit against the owner. That hearing took place in July.

This time, the owner appeared in court.

The judge dismissed the second lawsuit because the first case remained open. I understood and accepted the court’s explanation.

Afterward, I tried once again to resolve the matter related to the first case. I contacted the owner, and countless text messages were exchanged. They continued to insist that they had done absolutely nothing wrong and that I alone was responsible for the entire cost of repairing the mainboard fuse.

At the same time, he sent me numerous insulting and degrading messages. They even brought religion, God, sexual harassment, and racism into the conversation.

I have decided to end further communication with him and focus on exploring other legal options.

If anyone has any similar experiences or if you need more information about the shop, please dm me.

Does anyone know the easiest ways to get in on government-related grifting to accelerate my retirement?

I of course see a ton of shady shit happening all the time around me in PG. But when I see government officials and their friends and families getting money just for being who they are, it made me wonder how I might be able to get involved so I can retire early.

The article that made me make this post is here:

thebanner.com/community/housing/prince-georges-sheriff-evictions-MLAC7VI5IVCTFKCRQZZB7BAJGI/?schk=&rchk=&utm

tl;dr: A civilian octogenarian in Suitland boasts about being paid by landlords to "schedule"/"expedite" evictions. She also has security details from the sheriff's office accompany her on routine errands. Apparently not everyone in the sheriff's office is on board with these shenanigans, but the sheriff himself is good with it.

Does anyone know a good way for a normal person to get these kinds of perks--particularly the financial ones--from doing stuff that, a few years ago, might have gotten you arrested or at least shunned?

Inquiries ❓ Moving to PG County From Pittsburgh

Hey everyone!

I’m hoping to relocate to Prince George’s County next summer with my two kids, who will be 7 and 5 when we move. I’ll be renting for the first year while we get settled.
I’d love to hear your recommendations for:

-Great elementary schools
-Family-friendly neighborhoods that are safe and welcoming
-Areas with plenty of activities for kids

I’m also open to any general advice for someone moving to PG County for the first time-things you wish you had known, areas to avoid, or tips that made your transition easier.

Thanks in advance! I’m excited for this new chapter (my first move from my hometown) and appreciate any insight you can share.

Going to the PGCPS hiring fair on July 29th with no cert — worth it?

I’m making a career change into teaching. I have a poli sci degree and an MBA with a very good gpa for both (I read that helps?). My background is in nonprofit strategy (also an army veteran/spouse). I want to teach history or social studies at the secondary level.

I live in Fort Washington, my kids go to PGCPS schools, and this is genuinely where I want to be. Not a “I couldn’t find anything else” situation.

Problem is that I don’t have a teaching certificate yet. I started to apply to the Resident Teacher Program but they only have elementary, ESL, and Special Education openings from what I could tell. I’m starting my Maryland conditional cert application this week.

Thinking about going to the July 29th hiring fair but not sure if principals will even talk to me without a cert in hand.

Anyone navigate this before? Is the fair worth attending uncertified? Any advice is appreciated!

Car wrongly towed at The Varsity in College Park

I want to warn anyone parking at The Varsity / Board & Brew lot at 8150 Baltimore Ave in College Park.

On July 15, I scanned the posted ParkM QR code and paid $5 for a two-hour guest-parking permit. My permit began at 8:11 PM and was valid until 10:09 PM.

When I returned shortly before 10 PM, my car was gone. A1 Parking Management told me it was towed for nonpayment and required $175 to release it, despite my showing proof that I had paid. The tow ticket A1 gave me lists the tow time as 8:57 PM which was more than an hour before my paid permit expired. ParkM later sent an official proof-of-permit document confirming the permit was active for my vehicle during that time.

The ticket says the tow was requested by The Varsity. A1 handled the impound/release and the truck at the lot was Greg’s Towing.

I have requested a Prince George’s County Show Cause Hearing and asked A1 for its pre-tow records and photograph.

If you have had a similar issue with this specific lot, A1 Parking Management, Greg’s Towing, or ParkM (especially being towed despite an active permit), please comment or DM me. Firsthand details, dates, photos, tickets, and permit records could help establish whether this was an isolated error or a recurring problem.
