I saw it the other day and really loved it, especially the third act where the predator suits up and uses the environment shown in earlier scenes as weapons. I initially stayed away from it as I was disappointed by the last live action predator movie but I was wrong. I even tried to get my partner to watch it as I wanted to see it again but she fell asleep in 10 minutes (she does this with every movie lmao) I hope we get a sequel to it.

If there is one bad thing to say I’m not sure how I feel with the whole predator race becoming more friendly? Even though it’s just this one predator but I suppose I can chalk that up to individuality and the whole predator race doesn’t act the exact same way that we’ve seen before. Anyways really good found family movie. I give it a 5.5 out of 7.

So I made an interesting connection after the rewatch: "Predator" perfectly utilizes the "Alien" story formula:

• Group of expendable employees on a routine mission
• There's a secondary objective which they are not initially briefed on
• The second half of the movie shifts more toward sci-fi/horror
• With (nearly) everyone killed, it's down to one human and one alien

Obviously, "Predator" has its own twists and turns, and has quite a bit more action than "Alien." That formula has been executed so poorly in so many films, but here it was perfect. There isn't a dull moment and the tension is high.

The other thing I noticed was that I was laughing a lot more than I expected. Stan Winston's team gave the yautja a surprising amount of expression. When Dutch tries to lure him into a trap toward the end, the yautja hisses at him and makes it clear that he knows what's up. There's a lot of humanness in the reaction and I somehow never picked up on it before. Brilliant, and made for some good chuckles. I love details like that.

Could you imagine how completely HORRIFYING a Yautja that was captured and experimented with the other viruses on and because a "Yautja/Nemesis" Hybrid of some sorts? 😧

Many people on different platforms have eluded to a version of the script where romance was a thing but I can’t find anything to support that.

Scar wasn’t blooded yet so he was the human equivalent to a teenager, right? Or maybe super early 20s? In this mysterious originAl script, was he older?

Because Yautja have been around for so long I’m thinking maybe talk of the alt version of the script happened at a con I was too young to attend or an interview that’s lost media?

Look I get I know why they didn't want to give him the iconic classical Predator weapons but if you're gonna give em some fancy new tools what is effectively just a light saber is still really uninteresting imo compared to the rest of the predator weapons toolkit. It's too "human" and conventional, basic even. I know it's to make him come off as a more conventional protagonist cause all hero's have to use swords but still when I think predators I rarely ever think of them using swords. Think back to Predator 2 and look at just HOW MUCH iconic Predator material came from that era you got

All of which became iconic and recognizable aspects of the franchise to where they show up in all the video games and are referenced all the time. Nothing in badlands really comes close to feeling as memorable and I LIKE the movie

I’m really loving this predator. I think it’s better that alpha.

My God...that was hard to watch. I fear for the franchise because of how many people seemed to like this...er, "film".

They TOTALLY Disney-fied Deq and the story in general, it was painfully obvious upon meeting Thia that he would succeed because of "the power of friendship" and "working together". I am GENUINELY surprised there wasn't a musical number, and was kind of expecting one.

I'm not onboard with the direction Trachtenberg is going anymore. I want the more brutal, old school, savage, and martially honorable Yautja, not whatever Deq Kwei, their father, and every yautja in "Killer of Killers" was.

The old lore is being ignored outright, the yautja aren't acting like yautja. I've seen more bad bloods than honorable hunters. Decades of comics, novels and more work have thoroughly shown that yautja are not inclusive of other species and are rarely tolerant of even honorable humans.

Deq would not have Thia and Bud in his clan, other yautja would actively hunt them down and KILL him for this.

I'm watching a franchise I've loved ever since I first watched the first two films, being watered down and changed into something that is becoming increasingly unrecognizable from its origins. Which is a goddamn shame.

What I think I know:

1. Brothers John & Jim Thomas created them for film. They did the scripts but there weren't any books authored by them.
2. A father daughter duo have written novels about Yautja [Steve & S.D. Perry] but are these texts considered canon or are they regarded like, I don't know, unofficial/unauthorized almost fanfiction adjacent materials?

What I need from you

1. Book recommendations instead of YouTuber Channels [chances are I've already watched them]
2. Links to articles or interviews where the people who created these glorious beings, discuss lore.
