PoliticalTea 🗳️ Zohran Mamdani has released a video stating that after a review of legal avenues, New York City does not have the legal authority to arrest Benjamin Netanyahu in accordance with the ICC’s warrant if he comes to NYC. He calls on the federal government to join the ICC and execute the warrant.

Yes! A true leader speaks about issues he has no control or influence over in order to score internet points! Huzzah!

3

u/mindfeck 5h ago

He repeatedly focused on something he has no jurisdiction over. And wasted legal resources. I’d prefer he help NYC.

2

u/Candid_Elevator6580 4h ago

A populist who made claims he knew he couldn’t follow through on in order to gain support from his dumb voter base?

Or maybe he didn’t know and he himself is incredibly dumb as well. Anyone with a brain knew he couldn’t arrest Netanyahu.

He knows that, but having someone standing up for what's right is needed if we're ever going to turn our country around

51

u/LaMelonBallz 17h ago edited 17h ago

Public gestures like this have proven incredibly important in countering authoritarian regimes throughout history

Someone has to say what's real and true from a place/role that people traditionally accept as legitimate

It matters everytime a politician gets on the news and calls someone like Netanyahu what he is

10

u/Zenethe 14h ago

Kind of a big respect point I think as someone who would never have voted for him ever is the fact that he made a bold claim that he would see if he could make a very audacious play and then looked into it and followed up with what he found out and admitted he couldn’t do it. Lesser politicians would have made a bold claim and then waited for hype to die down and for people to forget about it.

10

u/Drexel_Spivy 14h ago

This dude is the first politician in my life that inspires anything other than disdain and apathy.

The sad part is that while we rightfully praise him in this current climate, what he does in any just society isnt praise worthy, in the sense that he's literally just doing his job as well as he can.

We as society need to start holding these people to much higher standards..

Obviously the US isn't going to join the ICC. That's been opposed widely by the USA since the beginning. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Service-Members%27_Protection_Act

→ More replies (1)

13

u/NoKingsInAmerica 17h ago edited 4h ago

They won't do it because the US doesn't recognize the ICC as an actual authority. That's why we didn’t arrest Putin when he came to the US.

Edit: Apparently people are too regarded to understand what I've written.

The US is not beholden to the ICC. We do not recognize their authority. We do not execute their arrest warrants. It doesn't matter whether the warrant is for an enemy or an ally. We will not arrest a foreign leader for the ICC.

4

u/mxzf 16h ago

I mean, also, nobody wants to up and try to arrest the leader of a nuclear power. It's just more of a headache than it's worth.

4

u/NoKingsInAmerica 16h ago

You're right, but the whole reason this is even being discussed is because of the ICC's arrest warrant, which we don't recognize.

5

u/redelastic 12h ago edited 7h ago

And the US treats human rights judges from the ICC as terrorists and sanctions them.

Joining the ICC would mean they‘d have to potentially give up American war criminals, like CIA operatives or iraq war soldiers that might get convicted.

3

u/WildWhisperArdor 13h ago

It’s more than that. It creates a strange situation where a US citizen could be acting under official state orders and then have that same state arrest them for it because an international court said to.

I don’t think it’s necessarily important that New York City doesn’t have the authority to arrest Netanyahu for his war crimes against the Palestinians.

I think the headline here is that the mayor of New York City, the cultural center of the United States and a city with an enormous Jewish population, was willing to openly call the leader of Israel, a “war criminal.”

Mamdani very clearly and calmly made his position known in unambiguous terms.

I’ve never seen that before, and I am not a young man.

His position is very clearly morally righteous and not remotely antisemitic. It is not a condemnation of Israel or the Jewish people, is a condemnation of a war criminal named Benjamin Netanyahu.

No notes. Very well done!

18

u/Relative_Mix_216 16h ago

Being the mayor of New York is called the second hardest job in the US, and that gives him a lot of influence over the Democratic Party.

We really needed someone like him to help galvanize a new political movement to counter Trumpism,

Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia created a special detail of Jewish police officers to guard the German Consulate and visiting Nazi officials in New York City. This detail was famously led by Officer Max Finkelstein in 1938. LaGuardia's intent was to make the Nazi officials noticeably uncomfortable while ensuring diplomatic security.

Do the same thing in reverse. Have officers of Middle Eastern heritage guard the Israelis.

Smart move. I don't think the mayor office should have the kind of power to arrest World leader who go to the UN. But stating that kind of intention with BN who is so unpopular worldwide is a savvy political grandstanding.

2

u/atreeismissing 14h ago

This is a bit (ok a lot) "no shit". US mayors can't arrest foreigners unless they commit crimes that are on the books in their own cities (or states) or directly impact US citizens for state or city crimes. Also, US has never been part of the ICC and doesn't recognize it. I get his goal is to bring awareness to Bibi's crimes but pretending he was looking into it when everyone knew it wasn't going to happen was just stupid theater for the past 2 weeks, time which would have been better spent getting big named politicians to publicly support the US entering the ICC in the future.

People underestimate this double edged sword. Israel apparently thinks and banks on antisemitism. Remember, they will turn any random goat farting into antisemitism and then kill that goat to tell the world, “Jews wont be oppressed”. Meanwhile, goat was Jewish, in Occupied Palestine - Jerusalem. It’s only sin was that the owner was a goy.

So, this essentially aides their bullshit great wall of lies. Pussy politicians will justify their genocide and give them money. AIPAC should’ve been a foreign terrorist organization, but this is so fucked that they had the audacity to merge intelligence and military. Fuck this world bro, the US politicians are a bunch of bitches.

2

u/Due_Adagio5156 13h ago

This is some impressive arrogance. You're not a federally elected member of the government. You're not even a member of your state government. You're the Mayor of an Island. An impressive island, but an island none the less. The arrogance of demanding to arrest a foreign leader because he doesn't handle people trying to erradicate his nation is mind boggling. You want to deny him entry to your city. Fine. Demand to deny him entry to the country. Fine. But to have the supreme arrogance to think you have the moral authority to sit in judgement of other nations is massive hubris of the first degree.

Every day I see more and more why people call this guy a terrible politician. He's honest, relatable, he's frequently doing his job and bettering people's lives. He's genuinely not corrupt enough to be a politician in New York City. We should call him a statesman or office holder. Calling him a politician feels like calling Alexander of Macedonia a soldier.

Courts only have as much power as they are given by the governed. The ICC governs no-one, so it has no power.

No one ever acts on these warrants anyway. They had a warrant for genocide from the ICC for Omar Al Bashir of Sudan and all signatory countries were obligated to arrest him if he showed up on their soil. Both the Arab league and African Union unbelievably PROTESTED the warrant as they said it ‘impinged on Sudanese sovereignty’ so Bashir goes to South Africa and they roll out the red carpet, no arrest.

He then went on a little tour of:Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Chad, South Africa, Uganda, Malawi, Djibouti, the Central African Republic, Rwanda, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, Mali, Morocco, and Zambia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, China, Iran, and Syria ( not all signatories to Rome statute but most are)

Not a single one arrested him.

Why can't our politicians just stay in their lanes? He is supposed to leading New York. How much did New York taxpayers pay for producing this video? Doesn't matter, one cent is too much.
